Reese Witherspoon has shared her excitement about the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, which will explore Elle Woods’ teenage years before she became the confident law student fans know and love. According to a report by Variety, the series is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
During her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Witherspoon revealed that the idea for Elle came to her after watching Wednesday, the Addams Family spin-off starring Jenna Ortega. She explained that she became curious about Elle Woods’ early life, wondering what she was like in high school, before college and law school. This curiosity led to the development of the new show.
Witherspoon is involved in the project as an executive producer through her company, Hello Sunshine. The script is being written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators behind Gossip Girl, and the series is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios.
Elle will follow Elle Woods as a teenager, exploring the experiences that helped shape her into the iconic character audiences first met in the original Legally Blonde movie.
As of now, the lead role has not been cast, but Witherspoon hinted that auditions are underway, and she has been impressed by the young actresses trying out for the part. She expressed her enthusiasm, saying that she loves all the candidates and finds it difficult to choose just one. She also described the casting process as fun and exciting.
Witherspoon confirmed that production is set to begin in March 2025. Though the exact release date has not been announced, Elle is expected to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video sometime this year.
