It was indeed a bold step from the legendary actor Mohanlal to shoulder a 3D fantasy adventure movie as his directorial debut. Unfortunately, the movie seems to not have sat well with the critics and the audiences as the responses are mediocre.

Talking with The Hollywood Reporter, Mohanlal responded to the criticisms by saying that those who have not watched the movie are trying to spread negative reviews. "The responsibility of taking a film forward lies with the audience. I see ‘Barroz’ as something significant that is being given back to society after four decades. Everyone who has watched the film has enjoyed it. However, some people haven't even seen the movie yet coming forward to criticize it. I am someone who accepts criticism. But when you criticize something, you should understand it well, said Mohanlal during the interview.

‘Drishyam’ actor also said that nowhere have they claimed that ‘Barroz’ should be compared to Hollywood films or the technology used there. “This is simply a different experiment from me and my exceptionally talented team," said Mohanlal.
Directed by Mohanlal, the story of ‘Barroz’ is penned by the ‘My Dear Kuttichathan’ fame Jijo Punnoose.
ETimes rated the film 2.5 out of and our review reads, “The film is visually appealing, and the artwork by Santosh Raman is top-notch, with the settings inside the cellar under the mansion seeming very real and grounded in the 1600s. The flashback scenes have their ups and downs, but they more or less seem more enticing than the modern-day timeline. The music again was just fine, and the score by Mark Killian matched the film's rhythm. The costumes worked in places but seemed off in certain parts, especially in the song sequence where Barroz recalls days with young Isabella.”
