Babbu Maan, Punjabi singer who famously leverages his music for social commentary, is grateful for the global appreciation being showered on Punjabi music. Commenting on how Punjabi artistes are trending across the world, he says, “It is because of media and other digital platforms that the richness of Punjabi art has come into the limelight.” He adds, “At this time, diversity of music is being accepted across the world, and language is not being a barrier to like any region’s music.”
Known for his profound lyrics, Babbu believes pathos, best conveyed through poetry, colours music. “My poetry chronicles my days from the village to the city, from stories of Partition, Sikh gurus and social structures,” he says, adding, “I love using languages like Urdu, which is an integral part of Punjabi music’s lyrics, to themes like love, sadness and lessons learnt from life. This is also why Punjabi music resonates globally.”
Having kept a low profile on social media, Babbu, says, “The truth of any matter is a subjective thing, which can only be understood by our own comprehension. A narrative that floats on online platforms is not the truth. People should consume it with a pinch of salt and not have blind faith in such stories.”
