NEW DELHI: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak on Thursday accused Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi of "misbehaving" with her while she, along with other MPs, was protesting on Parliament premises.
Konyak sent a letter to Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and said the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha "misbehaved with her in a loud voice and his physical proximity to her was so close that I being a lady member felt extremely uncomfortable".
"I belong to the ST community of Nagaland and I am a lady member. My dignity and self-esteem has been deeply hurt by Rahul Gandhi," Konyak said in her letter.
Who is Phangnon Konyak
S Phangnon Konyak made history on July 25, 2023, by becoming the first woman from Nagaland to preside over the Rajya Sabha.
Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar had nominated her to the panel of vice-chairpersons on July 17 last year.
Konyak, a
BJP MP, oversaw the Rajya Sabha session where the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022, was passed. Following the session, she tweeted, "Immensely privileged, humbled and overwhelmed to preside over the Rajya Sabha today. Happy that it was a productive one with The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022, having been passed by the House."

She serves on several parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. She is also a member of the Committee on Empowerment of Women and the Governing Council of the North-Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Shillong.Konyak's appointment to the panel of vice-chairpersons brings the number of women on the panel to four, matching the number of men. The other women members are Fauzia Khan of the NCP, PT Usha (nominated), and Sulata Deo of the Biju Janata Dal.
