Each year, India celebrates its
Republic Day on January 26 with great joy and fervour. This is a day when patriotism is in the air, and every citizen of the country is proud to be an India. It was on January 26, 1950, when the Constitution of India came into effect thus replacing the Government of India Act (1935). This historical moment established India as a sovereign, democratic, and secular republic. And so, this day signifies the fulfillment of India’s long struggle for independence from the British Raj and have its own governance system which is rooted in the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
For the unversed, India attained independence from the British Rule on August 15, 1947. Soon after, a Drafting Committee was set up under the leadership of BR Ambedkar, who is also called the father of Indian Constitution. And while the Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949, it came into effect on January 26, 1950. Why, one would wonder. That's because it was on January 26, 1930 (roughly 20 years ago) when the
Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) as the ultimate goal of their freedom movement. And so, in honour and remembrance of this day, January 26 was selected as the day when the Constitution of India came into effect.
