If you have been evading physical activity, this might be a wake up call for you. As per the findings of a study published in 2017 in Preventive Medicine journal, high levels of physical activity equate to a nine-year biological aging advantage.
The study by Birgham Young University has found that you can slow down cellular aging in the body as long as you continue to engage in physical activity.
“Just because you’re 40, doesn’t mean you’re 40 years old biologically,” Larry Tucker, the author of the study has said. “We all know people that seem younger than their actual age. The more physically active we are, the less biological aging takes place in our bodies.”
Those who are physically active have longer telomeres
"Telomeres are the nucleotide endcaps of our chromosomes. They’re like our biological clock and they’re extremely correlated with age; each time a cell replicates, we lose a tiny bit of the endcaps. Therefore, the older we get, the shorter our telomeres," explains Larry.
Shortest telomeres are seen in people who lead a sedentary lifestyle. There was no significant difference in telomere length between those with low or moderate physical activity and the sedentary people, which emphasizes on the importance of heavy physical activity in locking cellular aging.
“If you want to see a real difference in slowing your biological aging, it appears that a little exercise won’t cut it,” he said. “You have to work out regularly at high levels.”
Cellular aging is a key driver of overall aging
Cellular aging refers to the gradual decline in a cell’s ability to function properly and divide over time. It is caused by factors like DNA damage, oxidative stress, and shortening of telomeres (protective caps on chromosomes). Cellular aging contributes to the overall aging process of the body by impairing tissue repair and increasing vulnerability to diseases.
In contrast, aging refers to the broader biological process that encompasses changes in the body at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels, including visible signs like wrinkles and gray hair, as well as internal factors like organ deterioration.
What recommended duration of physical activity should we aim for?
To be highly active, women have to engage in 30 minutes of jogging per day, five days a week; men have to jog for 40 mins per day for 5 days a week.
Highly active also means at least 30 to 40 minutes of running, five days a week
