Diwali, the festival of diyas, rangolis,
crackers, and love, is right around the corner and all of India is in the festival spirit, buying things left and right, and decorating and cleaning their homes to welcoming Maa Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
The Diwali celebrations last five days, starting from Dhanteras and ending with Bhai Dooj, and each of them has its unique traditions, rituals, and way of celebration.
Diwali is celebrated in the Northern parts of India as the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the Ravan. In South India on the other hand, it celebrates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, and is this celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi.
For some others, Diwali is the day when Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, comes up during the churning of the ocean.

Diyas and candles are an important part of Diwali decor. The small, brown-coloured earthen pots are a great way to improve local businesses and have a traditional, ‘Indian’ touch to them. Placing these lit-up diyas all over the house, from patio to terrace, is believed to keep away negativity and light the way for Maa Lakshmi to enter your home.
Candles on the other hand, especially the scented ones, fill the home with a beautiful aroma that makes people happy and keeps them at ease.

Rangoli too is believed to attract and welcome Maa Lakshmi into the home.
Rangoli designs are an essential part of Diwali decor, and they are often crafted in the front yard or entrance of homes. These intricate patterns are drawn using coloured powders, flowers, rice flour, or even sand. Traditionally, rangoli is designed to invite Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, into the home. It is a symbol of welcome, and the practice of creating rangolis has been passed down through generations, often involving family members coming together to make these beautiful decorations.

As time goes on, and new inventions keep taking place, similarly, little things like Rangoli designs also experience change. The old Rangolis made with flowers, leaves, and rice flour, are not the only ones now. People have started using dyes, glitter, colours, paints, and the like for Rangoli designs.
For example, there is the traditional floral Rangoli with petals and leaves which have a very natural, fresh look. People pluck petals from marigolds, roses, jasmine, and the like to form circles, triangles, and more designs. The circles are then covered with a boundary made with leaves.
The glitter and shimmer Rangoli are all the rage right now and people are adding glitter powder to their paints, or in the coloured rice flour to make it elegant and trendy. This makes the rangoli sparkle and can be seen and spotted from a distance.
