Making the Jade flower

Jade is one of the most popular succulents and is known for its low-maintenance nature, ability to thrive without natural light, and continues to grow even in minimal watering. But, not many know that it can also produce flowers. And so here are some tips to promote blooming.

Have a dry environment

Jade plants grow tall in dry, arid regions, and so when you mimic this environment, they are more likely to push out the flowers. It is best to keep the plant on the terrace or in a space where there is bright sunlight for atleast 6 hours in a day.

Watering needs

While we usually neglect the Jade plant in terms of sunlight and watering, but if you want it to flower, it is important to water it well. Water it once everyday in the summer months and once every 2-3 days in the winters, and maintain a balance in watering.

Fertilise it

Every plant needs an extra push to start flowering or producing fruits and vegetables, and so fertilisation gives just that push. Fertilise the Jade plant with a balanced 10-10-10 NPK fertiliser once every 3-5 months. But do not fertilise in winters at all.

Prine the leaves

Often, when the leaves take up all the major nutrients from the roots, they hamper the growth of the flowers. So it is best to remove dead, yellowing, or overly long stems to encourage the plant to focus on producing flowers.

Proper drainage

Jade plants hate sitting in waterlogged soil, and so it is important to use well-draining cactus or succulent soil mixed with sand or perlite. Also make sure that the pot or container has ample drain holes.

‘Stress’ the plant

An advice that is commonly given for making Jade flower is to ‘stress’ the plant. This stressing is done by reducing watering slightly more than usual or exposing the plant to cooler nighttime temperatures. Do this once in a while, not everyday.

Repot when needed

Jade plants like being root-bound, and this can actually promote flowering. Avoid repotting the plant too often and only take it out of the original pot when the roots start to penetrate out or the stems start to bend down the whole pot.

Wait a while

It is important to remember that the Jade only starts flowering when it is about 3-5 years old, not before that. So, wait till they are mature enough and only then feed them with fertilisers, stressors, and the likes.
