NEW DELHI: Reigning US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau will be seen teeing off at the inaugural 'International Series India' - a part of the LIV Golf League and Asian Tour programme - to be played at the DLF Golf & Country Club in Gurugram from Jan 30 to Feb 2 next year, sources have confirmed to TOI.
The event -- presented by DLF -- will mark the first time a reigning Major champion will compete in a golf meet in India. The tournament will be played a week before LIV's season opener in Riyadh.
The American, who formerly played on the PGA Tour, has won two major championships - the 2020 and 2024 US Open. Nicknamed 'The Scientist' for his analytical approach to golf, DeChambeau has 13 professional wins and has spent more than 140 weeks in the world's top 10.
Several LIV Golf League and Asian Tour stars are expected to come to India, including home hero Anirban Lahiri. The Indian plays for the Crushers Golf Club which is one of the most successful teams in the league's history and is captained by DeChambeau.
The tournament will carry a prize purse of $2 million and around 108 international and home-grown golfers are likely to participate. It is the first of 10 events on a carefully curated schedule in 2025 that offers a pathway to the league for the end-of-season rankings champion.
The series' first event was held in Thailand in 2022.
In a special launch event on the sidelines of the season-ending PIF Saudi International, Lahiri confirmed his participation in the India series. "It's exciting to be associated with this tournament. It's going to be really big and an important step in developing the golf ecosystem in India. I would love to bring some colleagues from the LIV Golf League over to India," Lahiri said.
Rahul Singh, head of the International Series, said: "It is no secret that India is a key market in world golf, and partnering with DLF to bring this tournament to the subcontinent is a landmark for the Series. It is further compelling evidence of the strength of the Series as we enter our fourth season, and we look forward to making further exciting announcements in due course that will bring our brand of golf to a number of key territories around the world."
DLF's joint managing director and chief business officer Aakash Ohri said: "DLF consistently represents the best-in-class across property development and real estate in India, and this groundbreaking partnership with LIV Golf and the Series fits our outlook, bringing a best-in-class sporting event to India and showcasing our offering in and around DLF Golf and Country Club. We are confident the course will offer the world's best a stern test, and we are looking forward to welcoming India's golf fans - and sports fans from all over the world - to experience Gurugram and India."
Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO of Asian Tour, said: "The Series events are blue chip events on our calendar which are hugely popular with our players, and bringing the tour to India, and the unique DLF Golf and Country Club next year is a major milestone which will offer something new and different for the players to enjoy."
