NEW DELHI:
Tiger Woods, fresh off a disappointing performance at The Open Championship in Scotland, where he failed to make the cut, found himself in Bloomfield Township, Mich., on Monday. The golfing legend was there to support his son, Charlie, who was making his debut at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club.
Despite being a constant source of encouragement for his son's developing golf skills, Woods was unable to caddie for Charlie during the event.
The USGA has a rule in place that states, "A USGA rule prohibits parents or guardians from serving in that role during the event, including qualifying."
Charlie Woods, playing on the Oakland Hills North Course on Monday, had a challenging day, carding a 12-over-par 82. His score left him tied for 242nd place out of the 264 competitors. The young Woods is set to tackle the South Course on Tuesday.
The first-round lead was shared by Tyler Watts from Huntsville, Ala., and Mason Howell of Thomasville, Ga., both of whom shot impressive rounds of 5-under 65.
