Gumla: Salima Tete, captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, who will be conferred with the
Arjuna Award, said that the recognition belonged to the entire team and set-up.
Salima, a resident of remote tribal dominated Simdega district, is the first woman hockey player from Jharkhand to win the award and the second hockey player from the state after Olympian Michael Kindo, who received the honour in 1972.
“I’m very happy to be selected for this big award, one that only a few are fortunate enough to get. It is a proud moment for been given to me, it belongs to the entire team and our support staff. It’s only because we play together as a team that we have been able to perform on the ground,” added the midfielder, who was part of the women’s team that finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
Salima is the second of six children of Sulakshan Tete — a farmer in Simdega district.
“Before I could inform my family members, they rang me up to tell me the news. My whole family was cheering for me and it’s their blessings for me that has got me so far,” she added.
