The prodigal daughter returns in Shifting Gears, ABC's revolutionary new series!
On Monday, December 30, ABC debuted the first trailer for Shifting Gears, a new sitcom starring Kat Dennings and Tim Allen.
The new comedy features Matt (Allen), a "stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop," but when his estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two children return to his house, "the real restoration begins," according to the show's logline.
In addition to Dennings and Allen, who returns to sitcom in the new series, the cast includes Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.
"Is this my GTO? "I built that thing 15 years ago, and someone stole it!" Matt shouts as a run-down automobile enters his garage. When his daughter exits the vehicle with her children and a "Hey Dad," he jokes, "And there's the thief."
Back at Matt's house, he and Riley argue about how they last parted ways. When he mentions that the last time she left the house, she "looked back and gave me the double bird," Riley sighs and adds, "I was 18—the double bird is how I ended all our conversations."
"I'm crawling home because I'm broke and need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like," Riley admits in a candid conversation with Matt.
"You guys can remain here," he continues, to which she responds with surprise, "Really? Because I haven't changed much!"
Despite their willingness to make amends, Matt and Riley's relationship becomes increasingly challenging.
"Can we try to communicate to each other like sensible adults?" she begs, while Matt quips, "Have you seen the news recently? That is not a thing anymore."
The father-daughter combo discusses how Riley's mother "made a relationship between you and me possible" before her death.
"She was our bridge. "Maybe we could build our own bridge." Riley says, extending an olive branch.
"Okay, and then if I want to do something that you don't like, you just look at the roof over your head and go, 'Okay,'" he responds. Riley adds: "I'm not sure you understand how bridges work."
