Ryan Whyte Maloney, a former contestant on The Voice, has passed away at the age of 44. The Clark County Coroner in Las Vegas confirmed his death on Tuesday, Jan. 28, citing suicide as the cause of death due to a gunshot wound to the head.
On the night before his death, Maloney shared a video on his Instagram Stories from what appeared to be a bar. In the clip, he mentioned, “Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking,” while making a rock hand gesture.
Born in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981, Maloney had a lifelong passion for music. As a child, he mastered multiple instruments, including guitar, violin, cello, and drums. His career began as the frontman of the prog-rock band Indulge, with whom he toured for a decade and released the album Tomorrow’s Another Day in 2005. He later pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album Where I’ve Been, which was produced by Sean O’Dwyer, known for his work with The Black Crowes and Pink Floyd.
From 2010 to 2013, Maloney gained attention in the country music scene with original tracks like “Hillbilly,” “Michigan Moonlight,” and “Living with No Directions,” which received airplay on country radio stations across Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, and California.
In 2014, Maloney rose to national fame on season six of The Voice. During his blind audition, he performed Journey’s “Lights,” earning a coveted four-chair turn and ultimately joining Blake Shelton’s team. He became one of Shelton’s top five finalists and recorded memorable performances of songs such as Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and Rascal Flatts’ “Easy.”
