Exclusive - Shiwani Chakraborty: Anupamaa is not just a story, it’s an emotion
Actress Shiwani Chakraborty, who is part of Rajan Shahi’s show Anupamaa, says that her character is multilayered. She plays the role of Meeta on the show, and adds that she is unlike anything that Shiwani has played before.
“I play Prem’s chachi in the show. The Kotharis are a wealthy diamond merchant family, and my character, Meeta Kothari, also comes from an affluent background. She has always believed that her husband deserves a rightful place in the family. Even though he is chacha, why shouldn’t he have a say? Unlike Meeta, her husband is quite laid-back—he’s content with the family’s success, believing that as long as the damad and other members are doing well, there’s no need for him to interfere. However, Meeta is ambitious and somewhat greedy. She wants her family to rise in stature. Since the business is so vast, she envisions her children and husband taking charge,” she says.
She adds, “Meeta is a vibrant and playful character. She is stylish and loves flaunting the wealth and gifts from her parents. Unlike my previous role, which was de-glam, this one is glamorous—complete with elegant sarees and an extravagant look that reflects the Kothari family's lifestyle. There are multiple layers to her personality, and as the show progresses, viewers will get to see more dimensions of her character. She is self-centered and determined to ensure that her husband and son establish a strong position in the family.”
Talking about the show, she says, “Without a doubt, Anupamaa has become a name. It has been running successfully for five years, and people are still deeply connected to it. The show is not just a story—it’s an emotion for the audience. Being part of such a show, produced by Rajan Sir, is an honour. The entire team welcomed us with open arms. Since Anupamaa already has a massive fan base, we’ve been receiving a lot of love and messages from viewers. It’s a great feeling to be part of something so special.”
Ask her if she feels nervous being part of such a big show, and she says, “I believe a certain level of pressure is necessary for actors. Confidence is great, but overconfidence can be dangerous. Actors are like clay—they mold themselves according to the character’s needs. A little pressure helps us perform better and stay dedicated to our roles.”
