The Malayalam music industry and music lovers across the world are in mourning following the passing of legendary playback singer P. Jayachandran, who died on January 9, 2025, at the age of 80. Known as the 'Bhava Gayakan' for his ability to evoke profound emotions through his voice, Jayachandran's illustrious career spanned over six decades, during which he lent his voice to more than 16,000 songs. He passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thrissur.
Jayachandran's voice resonated across generations, from the golden era of Malayalam cinema to the contemporary times, making him one of the most revered figures in the world of Indian playback singing. His songs, which spanned multiple genres and languages, touched the hearts of millions. Whether it was a soulful ballad, a classical rendition, or a melodious romantic tune, his voice had the power to leave a lasting impact on listeners.
Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from fans, colleagues, and prominent personalities from the Malayalam entertainment industry.
Actress Kavitha Nair, who was deeply moved by Jayachandran’s contribution to music, penned an emotional tribute on social media. She wrote: “There are songs I play when I am completely alone, there are songs I want to share with someone I love, there are songs I love to celebrate, and yes, there are songs I would play when I need rest and rescue. And in every list, HE is there!!”
She continued, “A singer for all generations… a voice truly mesmerizing. But I also understand that throughout his life, he stayed true to his ways of living. What a legend!! I am sure soon he will be having a jamming session with Bhaskaran Mash and Dakshinamurthi Sir, and there will be 'Harshabashpam Thooki' brightening up their day.”
She concluded her heartfelt message saying, “Thank you for all the smiles and goosebumps you have given us. There will be no one like you! The first light music song I listened to, over and over again, and learned by heart was yours. You will always be in my playlist. Rest in peace, Sir.”

Anchor Mithun also shared his memories of sharing the stage with Jayachandran. Posting a throwback picture from a stage event, Mithun expressed his gratitude for having had the chance to work with such an iconic figure. "I feel incredibly lucky and privileged to have hosted and shared a stage with P. Jayachandran Sir, quite a few times. Malayalam lost a true legend today," Mithun wrote.

Prominent singers and musicians also paid their tributes. Singer Najeem Arshad, who is known for his work in Malayalam cinema, shared a tribute, recalling Jayachandran’s legacy as a timeless voice that defined Malayalam music.

KS Chithra, singer and judge of the popular reality show Star Singer, also expressed her sorrow over the loss of her dear colleague. "A true legend of Malayalam music has left us today. His voice will forever be etched in the hearts of all who loved music," Chithra wrote.

Vidhu Prathap shared a throwback picture with the late singer, reflecting on the deep respect he held for Jayachandran’s craft.

Pianist Stephen Devassy, who often collaborated with many leading musicians, summed up the loss by stating, “The legend is gone.”
