Jeremy Allen White has been chosen to lead Netflix’s upcoming limited series Enigma Variations, according to a report by Variety. The show is based on André Aciman’s 2017 novel of the same name and will follow the life of a bisexual man named Paul as he navigates different romantic relationships throughout his life.
The novel portrays Paul as someone whose feelings of love remain just as intense and possessive in adulthood as they were in his teenage years. Aciman, best known for his 2007 novel Call Me By Your Name, which was later adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, once shared his thoughts on Enigma Variations in a 2020 interview with PIBE Magazine. He explained that he wanted to explore the shifting nature of desire in a bisexual man’s life.
"I wanted to turn every possible stone and examine how he desires and whom he desires," the author had said at the time. He described Paul as a character whose romantic interests keep evolving over time, never settling into one fixed relationship. However, the one thing that remains constant in all of Paul’s relationships is his attraction to partners who seem emotionally distant or difficult to understand.
Oliver Hermanus, known for directing films like Moffie and Beauty, will take charge of the series as the director. Amanda Kate Shuman has been named as the showrunner and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Aciman and Allen White.
Jeremy Allen White has gained widespread recognition for his performance as Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto in FX’s The Bear, a role that has earned him multiple Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards. He is also well-known for playing Lip Gallagher in the long-running series Shameless.
Apart from his upcoming role in Enigma Variations, the actor is set to play Bruce Springsteen in the biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. As of now, White is the only confirmed cast member for the Netflix series, and more details about the project are expected to be announced in the coming months.
