Watch: Canadians boo US national anthem during hockey match after Trump imposes tariff on imports

Canadian hockey fans at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa loudly booed the national anthem of USA, "The Star-Spangled Banner", before the Ottawa Senators vs. Minnesota Wild game on Saturday night, just hours after President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff on Canadian imports took effect.
As Canadian-born singer Mandia began singing the US national anthem with the opening words, "Oh, say can you see," a wave of boos and jeers echoed through the sold-out arena of nearly 20,000 spectators, as reported by Daily Mail.


Despite the hostility, Mandia continued her performance, seemingly calming some of the crowd. However, as she concluded the anthem, grumbles and scattered cheers were heard from the stands, as per the New York Post.
Following the US anthem, Mandia performed "O Canada," during which fans passed around Canadian flags in a display of patriotism.
The boos were a reflection of growing frustration in Canada following Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced 25% retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion worth of US goods, with $30 billion taking effect Tuesday and the remaining $125 billion rolling out in 21 days.
Trudeau warned that Trump’s tariffs could lead to rising prices for US consumers, affecting grocery costs, gas prices, and auto production, while urging Canadians to boycott US products and travel.
Additionally, British Columbia premier David Eby called for the removal of American liquor brands from government store shelves in retaliation.
Canadian hockey fans are generally known for respecting national anthems, making Saturday’s reaction highly unusual. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, "I have NEVER seen Canadians boo any national anthem... ever before in my entire life".
Another user referenced a previous incident, writing, "Only time I've ever seen Canadians boo the US national anthem was during the Iraq war."
The controversy could continue, as more US-Canada matchups loom, including Sunday’s Vancouver Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings game in the NHL and the Toronto Raptors vs. Los Angeles Clippers game in the NBA, according to the Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, US President Trump defended the tariffs, stating, "These levies will bring a tremendous amount of money in for our country and bring a rebirth in American manufacturing." He added that tariffs serve as a punishment for nations failing to curb illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
