I am facing an intermittent issue on my WordPress website that seems to have started after installing the WP Activity Log plugin.

    Issue Description:

    • On three separate occasions, all pages of the site (except the homepage) suddenly started returning a 404 error page.
    • The issue sometimes resolves itself after a while, but in one case I need to re-save (flush) the permalink settings in WordPress to get the site working again.
    • Our hosting provider (Hostinger) also recommended flushing permalinks. After the second occurrence, I proactively re-saved permalinks as a precaution. However, the issue still occurred a third time.

    Timeline / Observations:

    • This issue started only after installing WP Activity Log.
    • It does not happen consistently — only intermittently.
    • Since then, the plugin has been kept activated and no issues have happened for the last 24 hours.

    Questions:

    • Could WP Activity Log (or any of its settings) cause temporary permalink or rewrite conflicts leading to 404 errors?
    • Is this a known issue, and are there any recommended troubleshooting steps to identify if the plugin is indeed the cause?
    • Are there specific logs I should capture (or enable within the plugin) to provide you more details if the issue happens again?

    Hello @thefunfact

Thank you for using our plugin. In regards to the issue, no one has ever reported such an issue. As such the plugin does not interact with those things on the website, so it is quite strange this is occurring.

In your post you said “Since then, the plugin has been kept activated and no issues have happened for the last 24 hours.” – you meant, deactivated? Or you meant the plugin is still active and this only happened for a few days?

In the meantime, can you please also answer the below questions, which help us better understand the issue?

    1. What version of PHP, WordPress and the plugin are you using?
    2. What happened to the permalinks exactly? Were the settings reset to default or changed to something else?
    3. Did you do any other “big” changes on the website during this period?

The more details you can share with us the better for us to understand the issue.

    Thanks.

Today I started getting a fatal WordPress error but once I renamed the wp-security-audit-log directory I was able to get back into my site.

My comment was mostly in response to your saying that you had not heard of others having issues. I will open a separate ticket if I cannot debug it myself by the weekend. 🙂
