A recent trend that has been appearing in many popular movies and TV shows is the idea of alternate universes; that is, different realities which contrast heavily with the established world thanks to at least one key change occurring somewhere in the past. Movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have dedicated themselves to diving deep into the idea, exploring numerous alternate realities that could have existed just as easily as the ones the characters live in.
However, while many major motion pictures have been entirely focused on this idea, there are also numerous TV shows that have diverged from their main narrative in order to consider alternate realities as well. After all, it can be very enjoyable for the creators and actors of the show to consider how different the lives of their characters could have been. While they all approach the subject in different ways,...

The 2024 Blu-ray release of Tank Girl by Eureka will let you enjoy this feminist 1995 pop culture classic. The movie itself is in full HD. It looks and sounds great. The title screen looks good and is in keeping with the film. There is a single menu for the main feature, the audio and special features. It is well laid out and easily accommodates all of the elements within it. Also it integrates well with the artwork on the title screen, which was done by Greg Staples.
Beyond the movie there are the special features. The audio commentary with Lori Petty (Rebecca Buck/Tank Girl) and the director Rachel Talalay is engaging. Talalay talks a lot about the difficulties with the studio, from big things like them deleting scenes to them objecting to tracks sung by female vocalists.
There are a number of interviews and short documentary pieces. They do of course.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.

Exclusive: The L.A.-based Screamfest Horror Film Festival has unveiled the first wave lineup for its 24th edition, taking place at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood from October 8-17.
Among the films to look out for at this year’s festival are two produced for Hulu by WorthenBrooks (formerly 20th Digital Studio), on which we were first to report: Screamfest alum Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket and Justin Harding’s Carved, both of which will premiere on Hulu later this year.
A supernatural horror film starring Jerrika Hinton and Elvis Nolasco, Mr. Crocket follows Summer Beverly (Hinton) as she embarks on a chilling journey to rescue her son from a sinister children’s show host with otherworldly powers. The capacity for sci-fi to pack imaginative exuberance, political richness, and sheer pulpy excitement into a dazzling cinematic adventure has been yielding masterpieces since the early days of the film medium, and it has allowed directors from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Lizzie Borden to Denis Villeneuve to create some of their finest, most enduring work. At the same time, big-budget sci-fi can be a tough sell -- the greater the worlds and setpieces and ideas being put forth, the higher the risk of financial underperformance.
Unsurprisingly, film history is peppered with sci-fi movies that flopped upon release, only for them to be reappraised and re-emerge as cult favorites years later. That was true of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," the grandfather of all go-for-broke sci-fi monuments, and it has been true of countless ambitious and unique cinematic visions in the century since. No matter how hard the movies below may have flopped,...

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those franchises that, despite its roller-coaster of quality across the series- is just too damn iconic to fall out of the favor of us horror fans. Wes Craven’s imagination birthed one of the most recognizable villains in horror history And spawned a franchise that would include 8 movies and one crossover film pitting Freddy against Jason. From 1984 and all the way up until today- audiences remain invested in the potential for such a unique and powerful monster. And we still are holding out hope for a new silver screen outing soon. So, whether you’re re-watching the original film for the millionth time- or you’re slogging your way through the 2010 remake for… some reason- the fact remains that Freddy and his status as a slasher icon will never truly die. Unless… Chapter six in the Freddy saga- Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!
One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.
No, I’m not talking about Furiosa, Charlize Theron’s iconic badass in “Mad Max: Fury Road.

"Who is Matilda Wormwood if not Carrie White without religious trauma?" This is a joke I made when interviewing "Abigail" directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for the /Film Daily podcast after complimenting them on their decision to cast Netflix's "Matilda the Musical" star Alisha Weir as their titular ballerina vampire. "Matilda" is one of author Roald Dahl's most beloved characters, offering children both the fantastical wish-fulfillment of having telekinetic superpowers, as well as the ever-important message that reading is cool. The 1988 novel has been adapted multiple times across various media, most notably the 1996 feature film directed by Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson, the two-part BBC Radio 4 special, the stage musical featuring music by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly, and the Netflix film adaptation of said musical.

Robert Englund steps into the director’s chair with ‘976-Evil,’ a dark dive into Satanism and demonology where a bullied outcast uses an occult hotline to bite back.
“Out of the darkness and into light, comes your horrorscope on this dark and stormy night.”
Robert Englund is a name who needs no introduction in the horror community. He’s played Freddy Krueger in eight A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and has brought life to one of the horror genre’s greatest icons. Englund’s incomparable work as Krueger would be enough to forever make him a celebrity, but he’s had a rich horror career that’s included multiple roles in Tobe Hooper films and, more recently, his standout performance as Victor Creel in the streaming phenomenon, Stranger Things. Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Actor Peter Capaldi reflects on "Heaven Sent" being voted Doctor Who's best episode, appreciating its themes of melancholy and death. Capaldi believes the episode resonated with audiences because it explores the darkness and compelling nature of mortality. "Heaven Sent" showcases the Doctor's determination and inner strength, solidifying why the character has endured for six decades.
Twelfth Doctor actor Peter Capaldi shares his thoughts on his penultimate season 9 episode, "Heaven Sent", being selected by fans as Doctor Who's best episode of the series' entire history to date. Capaldi took on the role of the Time Lord in 2013's seasonal special, "The Time of the Doctor", following a surprising cameo in the 50th anniversary story, "The Day of the Doctor", and would lead the series across three seasons until 2017. In "Heaven Sent", the Doctor is trapped in a mysterious castle, fending off a terrifying, unkillable monster alone as he tries to discover a way out.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Warning: contains spoilers for “The Star Beast”
Doctor Who’s new Tardis interior set will do “amazing things,” promises producer Phil Collinson. Speaking alongside fellow producer Vicki Delow and actor David Tennant on the official inside commentary accompanying “The Star Beast”, Collinson explained that the vast new white interior engineered by production designer Phil Sims isn’t only as big as it looks, but also has some surprises in store.
“All the lights work independently, they can spell out words. Every single one of the roundel lights is an individually controlled LED light. Viewers, you are going to see this set do amazing things through the series.”
Tennant describes it as a great honour to have been the Doctor to unveil the new Tardis interior, and have been “the first person to fiddle” with the super-sized new console and multi-layer gantries, as well as the first person to run around...

The 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who are coming to feature-packed DVD and Blu-ray releases in December.
At the time of writing, the first of three Doctor Who 60th anniversary special episodes has been broadcast. They’ve seen David Tennant return to the Tardis, accompanied by Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.
The three episodes – The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle – have also marked Russell T Davies’ return to the showrunner job on Doctor Who. He’s been busy scribbling the new episodes, that have been going out back in a Saturday night slot.
Furthermore, just as when Davies brought Doctor Who back in 2005, we’re getting some feature-packed discs to go with the show. The BBC will be releasing the 60th anniversary specials on DVD and Blu-ray, just in time for Christmas.
The release date, lest you think this is one of the endless modern news stories...

Donna Noble is back on Doctor Who — and so is David Tennant as the titular Time Lord. The past few years of the series were a narrative flatline, but in The Star Beast, the first of three 60th anniversary specials, the long-running genre show explodes with new life, as if freshly regenerated like the Doctor himself.
Russell T. Davies begins his second stint as showrunner with a familiar Doctor and companion, yet nothing about The Star Beast feels stale or safe. Together with director Rachel Talalay, he blows the doors off with a fun, thrilling cinematic adventure.

Choosing your favourite Doctor Who episode feels a bit like choosing your favourite child, except you probably don’t have 800-plus children, so maybe it’s even worse.
But that’s exactly what Doctor Who Magazine inflicted on fans earlier this year, sugaring the pill ever so slightly by combining all the multiple-episode stories into one, which helpfully narrowed the choice from over 800 episodes to 300 “TV adventures”.
Who fans were tasked with rating all episodes out of ten – narrowing it down to 37 stories – and then asked to pick their top five from this list. After much number crunching, the top 10 TV adventures were revealed.
And there was one clear winner: “Heaven Sent”.
This 2015 Peter Capaldi-era episode was certainly powerful and memorable. The Doctor was grieving Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), after she was executed in the previous episode, “Face The Raven”. In “Heaven Sent”, The Doctor is trapped in a strange castle,...

Praise Russell T Davies and his list of demands – Doctor Who is coming back to Saturday nights!
There’s no more guesswork required as to when the three 60th anniversary specials will air; the BBC has confirmed that we’ll get one a week starting from Saturday November 25, two days after the show’s official birthday on Thursday 23, and continuing on Saturday December 2 and Saturday December 9.
The exact BBC One time slots have yet to be announced, but common sense says that we’re looking at the pre-Strictly Come Dancing six to seven pm hour in the UK. If Disney+ is synchronising the streaming release worldwide, that would make it somewhere around lunchtime in the US. We’ll update as soon as the time slots are confirmed.
Each new extended special was written by Russell T Davies, with music by returning composer Murray Gold, and will be an hour long.

“Doctor Who” is looking back at its past. The long-running British sci-fi touchstone is celebrating its 60th anniversary with three new specials that bring back important figures from the show’s run, while making a big move outside the UK to Disney+. Now, the streamer has shared the full trailer for the 60th anniversary specials, ahead of their November premiere.
First premiering in 1963, BBC’s “Doctor Who” follows the titular Doctor, a mysterious adventurer from an alien Time Lord species who travels through the galaxy and time in his Police Box-disguised Tardis machine. Originally played by William Hartnell, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate into new forms upon death, and the character was portrayed by six other actors before the original run ended in 1989. After a 1996 TV film starring Paul McGann as the Doctor, the show was properly revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the lead. The series has...

Specials marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who have set their premiere dates.
The three specials, which will feature the return of David Tennant as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Temple-Noble, are set to roll out over three weeks beginning Nov. 25 — two days after the actual 60th anniversary of Doctor Who’s first ever episode. The specials will stream on Disney+ (which grabbed streaming rights to the series in 2022) worldwide with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland, where they’ll air on the BBC.
Disney+ has also released a new trailer for the specials, following a first trailer in September that showcased the saga’s main antagonist, Neil Patrick Harris’ Toymaker — a villain first seen on Doctor Who in 1966 in a now mostly missing run of episodes.
The specials find the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant, who also played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-10) reuniting with Donna as they battle the Toymaker.

Rachel Talalay praises the new sonic screwdriver design and how it fits in with the aesthetic of previous eras, while also complimenting David Tennant's stylish handling of the device. Speculation arises about how Tennant will approach portraying the seemingly all-new incarnation of the Doctor, as previous returns have maintained consistency with the character and mannerisms of the Tenth Doctor. The upcoming 60th-anniversary story promises thrilling adventures with chaotic crowds, nighttime alien skirmishes, and an energetic performance from Tennant, leaving viewers excited for what's to come.

Ronnie Yu's 2003 film "Freddy vs. Jason" -- simultaneously the eighth film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series and the eleventh film in the "Friday the 13th" series -- finally brought together two of the most popular characters of the 1980s slasher boom and had them wail on each other in a series of supernatural monster fights. Most slasher fans would have appreciated a "Freddy vs. Jason" film about a decade earlier, but there was still magic in the air in 2003; Yu's film made over $116 million on a $30 million budget.
It also, in a very utilitarian way, gave audiences exactly what they wanted. There was a decent-enough retinue of teenage victims to slaughter (led by actress Monica Keena). The story hung together juuuust well enough. And the final fights between Freddy (Robert Englund) and Jason (Ken Kirzinger) addressed any late-night, heavily intoxicated concerns horror fanboys might have posited.

Tom Kingsley, the director of Doctor Who's second 60th anniversary special has provided a tease for his episode that supports a theory as to the identity of who Neil Patrick Harris is playing. Later in 2023, three feature-length episodes of Doctor Who will celebrate the show's 60th anniversary by pitting David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor against Neil Patrick Harris' enigmatic antagonist, and fan-favorite comics monster Beep the Meep. The first special is directed by Rachel Talalay, who directed some of Peter Capaldi's most acclaimed episodes, with Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button on directing duties for the second and third entries, respectively.
The three directors were interviewed in Doctor Who Magazine #589, where they gave a great deal of insight into how they approached these hotly-anticipated special episodes. Although she is getting a reputation as a real life ‘tank girl’ due to an unfortunate string of poorly performing films, actress and producer Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment continues to develop the futuristic live-action feature "Tank Girl", for director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte ("As You Are"), based on the Dark Horse 1988 Brit comic book series, created by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett, featuring Robbie (again) as a wise-cracking skank:

"She undertakes a series of missions for a nebulous organization before making a serious mistake and being declared an outlaw for her sexual inclinations and her substance abuse.

Barry Allen begins his final battle against Red Death in The Flash season 9, episode 5 trailer. After building up the mystery of who Red Death is, The Flash season 9 is now getting to the bottom of why this version of Ryan Wilder is going after the Scarlet Speedster. In this week's episode, "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 1," the Arrowverse drama went into where this Ryan comes from and what she is up to. With this storyline getting closer to finishing up, the second part of the Red Death finale is coming up in just a week.

While it has been a long time since the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise graced cinema screens, the success of Scream 2022 proves that the slasher franchise would succeed if Freddy Krueger made a comeback. The Nightmare On Elm Street series was incredibly financially successful, but the fortunes of the franchise were still a mixed bag over the decades. While 1984's original Nightmare On Elm Street is now seen as a cult classic, its first sequel was a critical catastrophe and, while the next sequels improved the critical standing of the series, the last few outings were among the franchise’s worst-received movies.
Similarly, 2010’s Nightmare On Elm Street remake was critically lambasted even though the movie performed well financially, while the earlier franchise reboot New Nightmare was a hit with critics but failed at the box office. Despite these issues, however, the success of the twisty slasher sequel Scream 2022...

If there’s one thing that 60 years of Doctor Who has taught us, it’s that the show likes to keep us guessing, and its unique brand of fans really, really like to guess what might happen in the show’s future. Or the past. Or in a parallel universe. You know, timey wimey… stuff.
We’ve still got a while to wait to find out what the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations will bring, as episodes are not set to air until November 2023, but returning showrunner Russell T Davies certainly knows how to keep fans guessing away on the edge of their seats.
First, he used Instagram to tease announcements, including the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate, upcoming roles by Neil Patrick Harris and Yasmin Finney, and of course Ncuti Gatwa becoming the next Doctor.

3D is something that started as a gimmick when movie theaters were trying to win back audiences in the early days of TV. It quickly became a staple of the horror genre that came and went in waves, with the genre especially popular in the early eighties. After the first Avatar came out, it led to a huge resurgence in the technology, as 3D became radically different than the cheap gimmick it was once seen as. However, not all 3D movies are created equal, so here’s a list o 10 of our favorites.
10. Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Tim Burton has a very specific style and type of films that appeal to many, but definitely not all. This one is a case of looks over content. The film itself is, admittedly, not that great, but the 3D and design of the film are absolutely gorgeous. The story is Alice in Wonderland through...

To promote Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, the producers behind the franchise gave the slasher a bizarre, real-life funeral. Freddy became a pop culture phenomenon shortly after his debut in A Nightmare On Elm Street. With each successive sequel, he became goofier and wackier, byt his novelty wore off. The underwhelming performance of the fifth entry let production company New Line know his popularity had waned and they set up 1991's Freddy's Dead to conclusively wrap up the saga. This saw Freddy's long-lost daughter Katherine learning her heritage and, in a badly-dated 3D finale, blowing him and "ending" his reign of terror.
To promote Freddy's Dead, New Line even staged a high-profile funeral for Freddy at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. As recounted in the documentary Never Sleep Again the funeral featured a casket with Freddy's trademark red and green jumper and hat on top. Director Rachel Talalay and cast were present,...

It’s official, Millie Gibson is the new Doctor Who companion who’ll be travelling through space and time with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in Series 14. The 18-year-old actor is best known for playing the role of series regular Kelly Neelan in ITV soap Coronation Street, and if you want to feel old, was born just one year before the sci-fi show returned to television in 2005. She’ll be playing a character called Ruby Sunday.
The announcement was made live on the BBC’s Children in Need charity fundraising show, after a host of comedy skits and real-life stories, and the ever-brilliant Mel Giedroyc performing a bespoke dance to the Doctor Who theme music (the lyrics are “zonga zonga” now. It’s official.)
As a young soap actor Gibson follows in the footsteps of Jenna Coleman, who got her start in Emmerdale before becoming Clara Oswald and kick-starting a solid dramatic career.

The most recent edition of Doctor Who Magazine reveals that the first block of Series 14 will be directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, a young British screenwriter and director whose first major TV job was on M Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ horror series Servant. Starring Rupert Grint and Lauren Ambrose, that’s the story of a couple who hire a nanny to look after a reborn doll, opening their home to a mysterious force.
Between 2016 and 2019, Holmes Williams released three horror shorts that captured the film world’s attention. The Nightmare on Deskteeth Street is the story of a boot obsessive on a mission to retrieve his favourite pair, Stilts is set in a dystopia where everybody is forced to wear huge metal stilts, and The Devil’s Harmony is about a teenager who forms a Glee Club to wreak revenge on her high school enemies. The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise thoroughly fell apart before Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, but the slasher sequel could have wrapped up the whole series perfectly — if the movie's story wasn’t a logistical nightmare to pull off. The original A Nightmare on Elm Street was a straightforward masterpiece from iconic horror helmer Wes Craven, but the movie’s many sequels made Freddy Krueger’s story more and more complicated until it was almost unrecognizable. By the time Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare introduced Dream Demons, Craven's original, simple tale of a killer attacking teens in their dreams had become absurdly convoluted.
However, one draft of Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare managed to undo a lot of the franchise’s biggest issues, wrapping up Freddy Krueger’s story in a way that fit the tone of the movie while also making sense in terms of story. As proven by...

Tom Felton's Grand Guignol is the main villain of A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting, and here's the character explained. Before becoming a director, Rachel Talalay worked in various roles for New Line, including being the production manager on the Nightmare On Elm Street movies. She eventually made her directorial debut with 1991's Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, which was pitched as the last entry in the horror franchise. While the movie was a hit that featured some creative sequences - including Robert Englund's favorite Freddy kill - it's one of the weaker entries in the series.
Tahalaly would on to become a prolific TV director, helming episodes of UK drama Band Of Gold, Supernatural, Doctor Who and Sherlock. After a long gap, she returned to feature films with 2020's A Babysitter's Guide To Monster Hunting. This children's horror movie was based on author Joe Ballarini's novels series of the same name.
