Review: Billy Crystal is not known for his dramatic performances. To be fair, the legendary comedic actor has delivered performances that blend humor with serious moments, notably in projects like When Harry Met Sally, Throw Mama From The Train, and Mr. Saturday Night. Crystal has not headlined a fully dramatic project in his fifty-year career, making Before something of a surprise. A psychological thriller with elements of horror and mystery Before is a challenge for any performer, let alone a seventy-six-year-old like Billy Crystal. Murder mystery drama Death And Other Details is heading to Disney+ – and the show even has a new trailer! Have a gander within.
Michael Weiss has been a producer and screenwriter on many successful shows, including Chicago P.D, The Mentalist and the terrific Cobie Smulders private eye comedy drama Stumptown, which sadly only ran for a single series but is well worth watching. It’s currently streaming on Disney+.
Weiss is now co-showrunner of Death And Other Details, a murder mystery drama series heading to Hulu in the US and Disney+ in other territories, including the UK. It looks like a cross between Death On The Nile and The White Lotus, which is a pretty good hybrid if you ask us.

You’re going to have to find something new to bridge the gap with your Lyft driver, your boss, your agent, and your more distant family members at Thanksgiving. After eight years—eight years!—“Game of Thrones” is coming to an end next week. It feels surreal to leave the world of Dothraki-speaking dragon riders, fiery Free Folk, and the Army of the Dead, but debts have been paid, winter has come and gone, valar morghulis, and so on.
So, in loving tribute to Jon, Arya, Daenerys, Cersei, Tyrion, Hodor, and all the fallen soldiers, we’ve ranked each “Thrones” episode from the worst to the best in time for the highly anticipated series finale. The end result is filled with blood, sweat, severed heads, errant coffee cups, wildfire, and the occasional bit of dragonglass. As is always the case with “Thrones,” the debates and disagreements are part of the...

TNT’s “The Alienist” follows the investigation into a series of grisly murders that haunt a team of investigators. In that sense it’s not unlike HBO’s anthology “True Detective.” The first season of that drama won 5 Emmys out of 12 nominations in 2014, including one for Cary Joji Fukunaga‘s direction. Now Fukunaga is an executive producer and writer for “The Alienist,” so will he return to the Emmy race? If so he’ll be migrating to new categories: his season of “True Detective” was entered as a drama at the Emmys, but “The Alienist” is expected to compete as a limited series.
Apart from Fukunaga’s participation and similarities in tone, “The Alienist” is a quite different series, but it might appeal to many of the same television academy members who voted for “True Detective” or other crime series like “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Night Of.” Where season one...

Those missing their “Mindhunter” fix will be delighted to find another auteur filmmaker tackling the period serial killer genre as excitement builds for TNT’s “The Alienist,” a new series executive produced by Cary Fukunaga and Jakob Verbruggen. A gripping new trailer and poster promises a sensuously chilling drama worthy of the “True Detective” creator. Haunting fiddle music plays over young boys’ parlor games; a horse lays bleeding in the cobblestone streets; and the hunt is on for a nefarious “child killer.” As Fukunaga’s first foray into television after “True Detective,” “The Alienist” will surely pack a fine-tuned punch.

Gracepoint, Episode 6, Season One, “Episode 6”
Written by Jason Kim
Directed by David Petrarca
Airs Thursdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
“I need my anger right now Paul. It’s all I have left.”
As much as Gracepoint is about the mystery of who killed Danny Solano, it is also about the deadly paranoia that can infect a small town. “Episode Five” found Carver (David Tennant) and Ellie (Anna Gunn) stumbling upon more secrets and realizing that Jack (Nick Nolte) may very well be their most viable suspect. The final moments of the episode had his past arrest for statutory rape and his presence fifteen years earlier in a town that had a similar murder coming to light. But this episode is quiet except for a few acts of shocking violence.
“Episode Six” opens with a public spectacle through the center of town. As Ellie and Carver try to put a...

Gracepoint, Season 1, Episode 3, “Episode Three”
Written by Anya Epstein & Dan Futterman
Directed by David Petrarca
Airs Thursdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
“I hate the never-ending sky”
In just two episodes, Gracepoint has managed to introduce a show that is both a compelling character drama and a fascinating murder mystery. Leads David Tennant and Anna Gunn have slipped easily into their parts and Tennant in particular has been a standout.
Digging through evidence and misinformation, cops Carver (Tennant) and Ellie (Gunn) landed on Mark Solano (Michael Pena) as a suspect in his son’s murder at the end of “Episode Two”. One of the most fascinating things about Gracepoint is the town and how it is constructed, something that this episode highlights perfectly. The sense of community and paranoia that is building is slow and unrelenting. “Episode Three” is all about the mounting distrust found in the characters as the murder investigation continues.

Does piracy help or hurt the industry? Heading into 2014, that's the riddle that still has a variety of answers depending on who you ask. There are some who say that that being able to "sample" music (or movies or films) first leads to folks buying concert tickets, DVDs or merchandise, thus still providing a revenue stream to the creative people and content creators behind those efforts. Others say that theft is theft, and that an album or movie downloaded is still a lost album or ticket sale. Even at HBO, opinion is divided, as their most popular show is also their most illegally downloaded. TorrentFreak has released their list of the most pirated TV shows of 2013, and leading the way is "Game Of Thrones." Earlier this year, David Petrarca, helmer behind episodes of "Game Of Thrones," "True Blood" and "Boardwalk Empire," told a panel at the Perth's Writers Festival that...

Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead are the three most illegally downloaded TV programs of 2013, according to TorrentFreak. It's the second year in a row that Game of Thrones has earned that distinction. Downloaders torrented the show's season finale 5.9 million times this year. Breaking Bad achieved its Number Two ranking thanks to 4.2 million downloads (for a single episode), and The Walking Dead made it to Number Three with 3.6 million downloads.

Director David Petrarca returned to his theatrical roots for DirecTV’s anthology drama, “Full Circle,” from multi-hyphenate Neil Labute. “I’ve been doing a lot of big, big shows, but I love the exercise of getting two or three good actors in a room together and thinking about the acting,” Petrarca, whose directing credits include “Big Love,” “True Blood,” “Political Animals” and “Dawson’s Creek,” told TheWrap. “I love when things are really stripped down and really about the acting and the text,” he continued. “It is a nice diversion to get away from spectacle, size and scope. I love that stuff,...

Smash, Season 2, Episode 5: “The Read- Through”
Written by: Liz Tuccillo
Directed by: David Petrarca
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
The outcome of the recent changes made to Smash seems to have slowed it down to a snail’s pace. Last night’s episode was so boring it was easy to find an interrupting winter weather update in my city more interesting. It’s no easy task revitalizing a television show, and last week held so much promise, it’s just so sad to see the show take a turn into the land of the unenthusiastic. Long gone of the overly dramatic story lines (You guys, remember when Rebecca was poisoned? That was awful.) and now the personal lives of the characters have been striped from the show entirely. Smash has become so focused on making Bombshell work, but Bombshell doesn’t even know what it wants to be.

"Game of Thrones" was the most pirated show of 2012, but that doesn't have one of its directors, David Petrarca, too concerned. While he was speaking at a Q&A at the University of Western Australia, Petrarca made some surprising comments revealing that he thinks illegal downloads of "Game of Thrones" actually benefit the show.
His defense, as explained by WinterIsComing.net, is that shows like "Game of Thrones" thrive on their "cultural buzz," which is increased by more people watching it. "That's how they survive," he reportedly said. Petrarca, who helmed the Season 2 episodes "The Ghost of Harrenhaal" and "Garden of Bones," later clarified to Australia's ABC Radio that, while he doesn't condone illegal downloading of shows, he does think that the more people watching it, the better.

Game of Thrones is the most pirated show on television with a staggering 3.9 million illegal downloads per episode. And while various governments dish out strict penalties for the practice to those they repeatedly catch, Game of Thrones director David Petrarca thinks the social media impact that results from illegal downloads outweigh the negatives of losing official viewers. Check out what Petrarca had to say at a recent Q&A panel, courtesy of WinterIsComing.net. Panel mediator Rosemary Neill noted Game of Thrones was the most pirated show of 2012 and that 10 per cent of the downloads came from Australia. But Petrarca shrugged and said the illegal downloads did not matter because such shows thrived on “cultural buzz” and capitalised on the social commentary they generated. “That’s how they survive,” he told the crowd gathered at the University of Western Australia. Do you think that's true? Petrarca has recently backtracked on...

Attending the Perth's Writers Festival in Western Australia over the weekend was filmmaker David Petrarca, a frequent director of high profile HBO series like "True Blood," "Boardwalk Empire," and "Game of Thrones".
Petrarca was part of a panel discussing the rise of premium cable TV channels and the challenge it presents to other storytelling formats like novels. The topic of piracy came up, specifically "Game of Thrones" which was the most pirated show globally last year.
It is an especially relevant topic in Australia as it is estimated that nearly 2% of the entire country's population illegally downloads an average episode of 'Thrones', compared with 0.13% of the U.S. population (the next highest downloader of that show).
According to The Age, Petrarca said that illegal downloads did not matter because such shows thrived on "cultural buzz" and capitalise on the social commentary they generated. More buzz equals an increase in show's popularity,...

"Game of Thrones" is the most-pirated television show of last year, with some episodes being downloaded as many as four million times. But David Petrarca, who directed several of the episodes, says that illegal downloads don't hurt the show. In fact, they help. Speaking at a writers festival at the University of Western Australia, Petrarca explained that piracy creates "cultural buzz" and increases the show's popularity. In other words, the more people that see the show, the more talk about it. "That's how [shows] survive," he added. There are many ways to looks at this. On one hand, "Game of Thrones" loses millions of dollars due to piracy. On the other, the show broke HBO's record for the biggest DVD and Blu-ray sales. The second season sold 44% more DVDs than the first season. And another spike is expected for the third season.

HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones" was the most pirated television show of 2012, but the vast number of illegal downloads doesn't appear to phase the show's director, David Petrarca.
According to Australia's The Age, Petrarca told a group gathered for a writers festival at the University of Western Australia that online piracy doesn't matter much, so long as there is "cultural buzz" and social commentary surrounding a show.
"That's how they survive," Petrarca reportedly told the group.
"Game of Thrones" has a history of garnering more illegal downloads than viewers: The website TorrentFreak released a list of the most popular pirated TV shows of 2012 and found that the series led the pack with 4.28 million illegal downloads of a single episode.
The director's perspective about the vast number of downloads, however, is not shared by Internet service providers.
Petrarcas comments come on the heels of an initiative to discourage online piracy.

Alan Ball will be stepping down as showrunner of "True Blood" at the end of Season 5, and now we know who will replace him should HBO renew the series for a Season 6. But before we get ahead of ourselves, here are the synopses of Episodes 5.01, 5.02, and 5.03, airing June 10, 17, and 24.
According to Deadline, co-executive producer Mark Hudis will be upped to executive producer/showrunner for Season 6 as part of an overall deal he has signed with HBO. The two-year pact also includes a development component.
Hudis has been on "True Blood" for two seasons — last year’s Season 4 and Season 5, which premieres June 10th. While his and Ball’s paths previously crossed on the CBS comedy series "Cybill", where they co-wrote several episodes during the 1997-98 season, the two first met two decades ago working at trade publication AdWeek. The "old gods" of this terrific episode's title probably refers to the deities worshipped by Ned Stark and his family; but to the children in his household, Ned himself was a god. He wasn't just their father (or father figure), he was the lord of all he surveyed and the leader of a whole host of lesser lords and smallfolk. To those who grew up at Winterfell, he was all-powerful; a strong, stubborn, honorable man who tried to wield his power compassionately.
But the young men and women of the Stark household learned the hard way that whatever useful or positive qualities he possessed -- and let's face it, political acumen wasn't one of them -- didn't save him in the end. Now, they're all enduring brutal post-Ned educations, learning heart-wrenching...

Game of Thrones, Season 2, Episode 5: “The Ghost of Harrenhal”
Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss
Directed by David Petrarca
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on HBO
Well, that’s one would-be ruler down. Renly Baratheon dies an ignoble death at the hands of Melisandre’s foul hellspawn very near the beginning of “The Ghost of Harrenhal,” and that moment kickstarts an hour that moves by at a considerably elevated click. There’s significant plot movement on almost every front, as well as a very palpable sense of danger and imminent change.
Renly is dead, which would seem to be a boon to his almost hilariously unsentimental brother Stannis, but his faithful advisor Davos quite sensibly warns him of Melisandre’s ever-growing influence; if “Harrenhal” has a clear throughline, it’s the whole notion of advisement, and the importance of a clear, objective second opinion in the face of monumental decision.

Don't read this unless you've seen Season 2, Episode 5 of "Game of Thrones," entitled "The Ghost of Harrenhal."
A few weeks ago, after the first couple of episodes of "Game of Thrones'" second season had aired, I heard from someone on Twitter who was on the verge of checking out and giving up on the show. I don't remember exactly what the wording of his or her question was, I just recall that the query was along the lines of, "Does it get much darker than this?"
Those of us who have read the books are inclined to chuckle ominously at such questions -- certainly not to mock the questioner, because I absolutely understand and empathize with where that question came from. But it's hard not to look at the sweep of George R.R. Martin's tale and say, "This is the fun part!"
I kid (a little), but I understand why,...

"Hard truths cut both ways..." These words, uttered by Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), are brimming with power and potency and an absolute truth of their own: the hardest truths are the ones that cut us the deepest, that remind us that our perceptions are faulty or our world is off-kilter, that serve to wake us up to some reality heretofore unseen or unrealized. And, yes, the sharpness of the hardest truths--as fine-edged as a Valyrian dagger--can cut more than just the utterer to the quick. In the case of Stannis and his Onion Knight, Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), the reality of their situation injures them both. As Davos tries to demonstrate his loyalty to his king by sharing his concerns about Melisandre (Carice van Houten), it's Stannis who takes umbrage at his comments, refusing to discuss just what happened in the cave (see last week's review), refusing the acknowledge...

Game of Thrones, Season 2, Episode 4: “Garden of Bones”
Written by Vanessa Taylor
Directed by David Petrarca
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on HBO
The first scene we get in “Garden of Bones” features a couple of Lannister footsoldiers chuckling at their own low wit, mocking Renly Baratheon’s homosexuality – that is, until Robb’s soldiers sweep in and cut them down in darkness. That’s a sign of things to come: no more time for messing about, ’cause things are starting to get real.
For the first time since the premiere, we’re graced with the presence of King Joffrey, who’s proving to be even more depicable than we may have thought possible. First he points a crossbow at poor Sansa, hoping to make her atone for Robb’s latest victory, then he orders her beaten and stripped; I seem to recall a saying about absolute power that applies here.

Yes it’s a new Game of Thrones poster and … ewwww. But hey, that show has never, ever pulled punches, and it looks like we are being prepared for more of the same. HBO has also provided us with a press release, which gives a quick thumbnail sketch of where we are in the story, perfect for newbies and for those of us who maybe don’t remember exactly where everything was left at the end of Season 1.
Gruesome, no? If you’re going to attend WonderCon this weekend, Game of Thrones will be at Booth #438, where you can get a pic of your own head on a spike (by an FX artist, folks) which will then be loaded onto the official Game of Thrones Facebook page.
Now for the press release, with a Big Giant Warning: After the nice neat summary, the press release includes clearly marked synposes of the five April episodes.

Down with the direction of Game Of Thrones Season 2?
HBO’s Game of Thrones is pulling out the big guns (or maybe it should be big blades) by bringing in some big name directors to helm various episodes in Season 2 of the hit series. We’ve been seeing tons of info regarding casting news, so it’s refreshing to see THR talk about some of the names behind the camera, and the small screen is definitely getting some experience in the director’s seat for Season 2 of Game of Thrones.
Alik Sakharov, who worked as a cinematographer on Thrones during Season 1, has stepped up to sit in the director’s chair. In addition to lending his cinematography skills to The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Rome, he has also previously directed episodes of Brotherhood.
David Petrarca is no stranger to HBO hits, with directing credits that include Boardwalk Empire,...
