Prime Video has announced that the Japanese Original film Broken Rage will launch on February 13, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Directed, written by, and starring the legendary filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, who continues to receive worldwide acclaim, Broken Rage is based on his concept of exploring “comedy within a violent film.”

This hour-long film is divided into two parts. The first half depicts a hard-boiled crime action where a hitman, caught between the police and the yakuza, struggles to survive. The second half ingeniously retells the same story using self-parody techniques, presenting it in a comedic style.

This work, which director Kitano himself described as an experimental endeavor, was selected for the Out of Competition section at the Venice International Film Festival 2024. It marks the first Japanese film produced for streaming to be officially selected for the prestigious international film festival.

Takeshi Kitano’s new film, Broken Rage, will be available on Prime Video on February 13 worldwide. This streaming-only film is the first Japanese movie officially chosen for the Venice Film Festival. It will be shown outside the game at a major event in 2024.

Kitano, a well-known Japanese film director, stars in and directs the movie. Kitano is known for his creative storytelling, and in Broken Rage, he takes a bold approach by mixing two different styles in the story. The first half is a gritty crime thriller about a hitman in a deadly conflict between the cops and the yakuza. The second half reimagines the same story through a comedic lens, using self-parody to shift the film’s tone.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards ceremony, which has been delayed twice due to the L.A. wildfires, finally has a new date.

The ceremony will now be held Friday, Feb. 7, starting at 7 pm Et, and be broadcast on E!, live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The show will also be available to stream the next day on Peacock. However, a previously planned red-carpet special, Live from E!: Critics Choice Awards, will no longer air ahead of the telecast.

A whopping 21* performers received their first individual Screen Actors Guild Awards bids on Wednesday morning, including some famous faces we’ve been seeing onscreen for years.

The nominations list for the 2025 SAG Awards is led by Wicked for film and Shōgun for television, both with five overall bids. The first-time nominees from these projects are Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey for the former, and Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Anna Sawai for the latter.

Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Harrison Ford are some of the biggest Hollywood names to finally be individually recognized at SAG, for their performances in The Last Showgirl, The Substance, and Shrinking, respectively. The Golden Globe awards took place this last weekend, and to the surprise of no one, FX's feudal Japan drama Shōgun took home several awards. The show won Best Drama Series, Hiroyuki Sanada (Yoshii Toranaga) won Best Drama TV Actor, Tadanobu Asano (Kashigi Yabushige) won Best TV Supporting Actor, and Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) beat out House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy to take home the win for Best Drama TV Actress. Regardless of the competition, Shōgun was such a pitch perfect show that you'd have been crazy to bet against it.

Part of the reason Shōgun was so effective was that it told a complete, extremely powerful story; the show was designed as a limited series and covered the entirety of the classic 1975 novel by James Clavell. Audiences are going to have quite a bit of waiting to do before Season 2 of Shōgun, as the upcoming installment is still being written.

Co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Justin Marks told reporters backstage at the Golden Globes on Sunday night that he and the writers are “about six weeks from the end of the writers’ room” on Season 2.

Marks and the rest of the cast and crew remained quiet on any details regarding the new season, or when production will begin. Deadline reported in May that the writers room was assembled last year and began over the summer.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards were a lively celebration of different kinds of people and great acts. The night’s top film winners were Netflix’s Spanish-language song Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist immigrant story. The night’s top TV winners were the historical drama Shōgun.

Emilia Pérez led the evening, winning four awards, including Best Picture—Musical or Comedy. The film was nominated for ten awards and won three. Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Female Actor. Saldaña’s win was especially impressive because she beat out co-star Selena Gomez and Wicked star Ariana Grande.

In the wake of the New Orleans terrorist attack, the level of security at the Globes was unprecedented. The streets surrounding the Beverly Hilton were cleared of vehicles and there was a more pronounced police presence from years past. The shuttle ferrying production crew, publicists, and media from the off-site lot to the Hilton had to navigate a circuitous route through and around secruity, making the normally 2-minute trip into a 20-minute odyssey.

Sunday’s 2025 Golden Globes was yet another disappointing night for Oscar hopeful Anora.

Though the Palme d’Or-winning film from Sean Baker went into the evening with five nominations, tied with The Substance — which won best actress in a musical or comedy for star Demi Moore — Anora went home empty-handed.

Other films with multiple Golden Globe nominations that were shut out Sunday night include four-time nominee The Wild Robot, which had been expected by some pundits to win the best animated feature category; three-time nominee A Complete Unknown, though star Timothée Chalamet got some love during host Nikki Glaser’s monologue; and double nominees All We Imagine as Light, The Apprentice, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2 and The Last Showgirl.

After a year of actual normalcy (one without strikes or a pandemic), Hollywood is back to its regularly scheduled programming, which includes a fun and frenzied Golden Globes. The enjoyable but unserious cousin of the awards shows has finally found its stride, post-Hollywood Foreign Press Association scandals. Following an absolute dud of a ceremony last January, the Golden Globes righted its wrongs by offering nominees and viewers something both wholly different and beautifully familiar.

Comedian Nikki Glaser, the first solo female host in the show’s history, dived right in with a strong and quippy opening monologue. The ex-“FBoy Island” host covered a wide range of topics, including the 2024 Presidential election results and the #MeToo movement, and was vibrant and zingy from the moment she opened her mouth. Glaser quickly pressed on everything from Timothée Chalamet’s sparse mustache to “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s viral holding space interview.

The 82nd Golden Globes awards ceremony has just finished up, and while a number of comic book, sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies and TV shows were nominated in several major categories, only a few prevailed on the night.

Colin Farrell won Best actor in an anthology, limited series, or TV movie for his lead performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but co-star Cristin Milioti lost out to Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country).

Kathryn Hahn was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along, but Jean Smart picked up the award for Hacks.

FX’s Shōgun continued its awards sweep from the Emmys at the Golden Globes, winning the Best Television Series – Drama category in addition to Lead Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada, Lead Actress for Anna Sawai and Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano.

Unlike the Emmys, where FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel competed as a drama and the 1980 NBC take as a miniseries, at the Globes both incarnations were classified as drama series, so Season 1 of the FX saga took the same Drama Series category its predecessor did 44 years ago.

Just as he did at the Emmys, Justin Marks, Shōgun co-creator, executive producer and showrunner alongside his wife, Rachel Kondo, accepted the top drama award. He framed his speech with an amusing domesticity anecdote.

Mubi strategically chose to submit The Substance as a musical/comedy when the body-horror satire seemed like a long shot for serious drama consideration. First-time Emmy winner Anna Sawai is now also a first-time Golden Globe winner for her tole as Toda Mariko in the FX series Shōgun. She joined fellow Japanese actress Yôko Shimada who won the Golden Globe in the same category in 1981 for playing the same role in NBC’s miniseries adaptation of James Clavell’s novel. Overall, Sawai is the third actress of Asian decent to take home the Lead Actress in a Drama Series Golden Globe, alongside Shimada and Sandra Oh, a 2019 winner for Killing Eve.

Admitting she has “so much people to thank,” Sawai kept her speech short.

“Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” she said, referencing fellow nominee in her category Bates, recognized for her starring role on CBS’ Matlock. (Bates had been seen ripping up her acceptance speech after Sawai’s name was announced.

Shōgun took home the Best Television Series Drama award at the Golden Globes on Sunday, sweeping all four categories for which the historic epic was nominated. The FX series, a fan favorite among television critics, was up against other hit dramas: The Diplomat, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Squid Game, and The Day of the Jackal.

As showrunner Justin Marks accepted the award, he delved into the duality of searching for his newly adopted 50-pound tortoise around his home the day before and standing on stage in front of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.

Anna Sawai gave a very brief victory speech after winning her first Golden Globe, claiming the award for best female actor in a TV drama for her performance in the FX drama “Shōgun.”

“Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” Sawai said, referencing her competitor who was nominated for “Matlock.”

“Thank you to our incredible writers. Without a good script, it’s impossible to give a performance to our fullest potential. Thank you to everyone else. I’m going to thank you later!” Sawai concluded.

In “Shōgun,” Sawai plays Toda Mariko, a highborn woman who serves as a translator between the Japanese ruler Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the English mariner John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). She beat Bates (“Matlock”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) in the category.

Break out the brooms because Shōgun swept the Golden Globes on Sunday, converting all four of its nominations — Best Drama Series, Best TV Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best TV Drama Actress for Anna Sawai, and Best TV Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano — into wins. The FX epic’s victories in the drama categories replicated the same haul the original 1980 series nabbed.

At the 38th Golden Globes in 1981, NBC’s adaptation of James Clavell‘s novel also pulled off a clean sweep but in just those three categories: drama series, actor for Richard Chamberlain, and actress for Yoko Shimada. Chamberlain played John Blackthorne, who was portrayed by Cosmo Jarvis in the FX version. Shimada played Sawai’s role, Toda Mariko.

“Shōgun” proves triumphant, capping off an awards season run that includes wins for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year from the Television Critics Association, and now the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Drama.

The FX/Hulu historical series based on the novel by James Clavell seized the top award on Sunday, beating out Netflix’s “The Diplomat” and “Squid Game,” as well as Amazon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”

“Shōgun” wins for its first season, with Seasons 2 and 3 now in early development.
