"If you work with us, we'll let you off the hook." Prime Video in Japan has revealed a trailer for Broken Rage, a unique Takeshi Kitano film ready for release on streaming in the next few months. This initially premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival as a special selection following his 3-hour long film Kubi the year before. Broken Rage follows a hitman, Nezumi (played by Beat Talkeshi), fighting for his survival when he’s caught between the police and yakuza. But in the second half, the gritty crime-action thriller takes an unexpected turn, evolving into a self-parodying comedy that retells the same story with a very humorous touch. A two-part film. This first half is a gritty action film in a dark criminal underworld revolving around a hitman and his struggle for survival. Aside from Takeshi Kitano, this also stars Tadanobu Asano and Nao Ômori. I watched this in...

Prime Video has announced that the Japanese Original film Broken Rage will launch on February 13, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Directed, written by, and starring the legendary filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, who continues to receive worldwide acclaim, Broken Rage is based on his concept of exploring “comedy within a violent film.”
This hour-long film is divided into two parts. The first half depicts a hard-boiled crime action where a hitman, caught between the police and the yakuza, struggles to survive. The second half ingeniously retells the same story using self-parody techniques, presenting it in a comedic style.
This work, which director Kitano himself described as an experimental endeavor, was selected for the Out of Competition section at the Venice International Film Festival 2024. It marks the first Japanese film produced for streaming to be officially selected for the prestigious international film festival.

The 2010s were an underrated decade when it comes to movies that are so bad that they're amazing, with multiple strong contenders for the specific subgenre of awful movies that are impossible to look away from. When it comes to the best "so bad they're good" movies, the 90s and early 2000s tend to dominate, with classics like Troll 2 and The Room being classic examples. But more recent years have proven that such delicious garbage never stopped being produced.
Laughably bad movies from the 2010s tend to come in two primary flavors; big-budget studio investments that were huge misses and poorly-conceived indie movies made for pennies. Both offer their own unique brand of potent failure, from major decisions that were bafflingly agreed upon by huge studio executives to single-minded visions of bizarre cinematic auteurs that give Tommy Wiseau a run for his money. For those that can appreciate a uniquely terrible film,...

Takeshi Kitano’s new film, Broken Rage, will be available on Prime Video on February 13 worldwide. This streaming-only film is the first Japanese movie officially chosen for the Venice Film Festival. It will be shown outside the game at a major event in 2024.
Kitano, a well-known Japanese film director, stars in and directs the movie. Kitano is known for his creative storytelling, and in Broken Rage, he takes a bold approach by mixing two different styles in the story. The first half is a gritty crime thriller about a hitman in a deadly conflict between the cops and the yakuza. The second half reimagines the same story through a comedic lens, using self-parody to shift the film’s tone.
Kitano described his project as an experiment to see if there can be comedy in a violent film.
Tadanobu Asano, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor, stars in the film.

The Best Film Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards can occasionally be a tough one to predict. Gold Derby’s pundits erroneously thought that 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would prevail over Parasite, while 2016’s Hidden Figures was correctly chosen by only one of the editors, experts, or top 24 users — combined. Well, this year’s top race looks to be less of a head-scratcher and more of a coronation, as Gold Derby’s 2025 SAG Awards predictions overwhelmingly favor Wicked to win with 17/10 odds. Talk about popular!
The SAG nominations were announced on Jan. 8, with Wicked leading all other films with five bids: Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey), and Best Stunt Ensemble. Universal Pictures’ big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical is not expected to win any other trophies with the acting guild, though that’s par for the course,...

In 2002, the hype for Japanese horror films was declining rapidly, as the sequels to series like “Ring” or “The Grudge” were commercially and critically unsuccessful. Even though directors such as Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu came to Hollywood to helm the remakes to their films or their sequels, Hollywood had already adapted J-horror tropes to its own productions. As Jerry White points out, one of the perhaps most disappointing entries in the J-horror remakes was Jim Sonzero’s version of Kiyoshi Kurosawa‘s “Pulse” (2001). Perhaps it was this particular experience which made Kurosawa change genres with his next project “Bright Future”.
Bright Future is screening at Black Movie

Rampo Noir is a visually arresting anthology film that brings together four short stories inspired by the works of Japanese author Edogawa Rampo, often referred to as the Japanese Edgar Allan Poe. Directed by a quartet of filmmakers – Akio Jissoji, Atsushi Kaneko, Hisayasu Sato, and Suguru Takeuchi – each segment of the film delves into the macabre, surreal, and psychological depths of Rampo’s unsettling world.
The film’s strongest suit is undoubtedly its visual style. Every segment is meticulously crafted, offering a unique aesthetic that ranges from gothic elegance to nightmarish surrealism. The directors employ a variety of techniques—stark lighting contrasts, elaborate set designs, and experimental cinematography—that evoke a dreamlike and,...

Arrow Video continues its legacy of spotlighting extraordinary cinema with the release of Rampo Noir on Limited Edition Blu-ray. This chilling anthology pays tribute to the enigmatic and unsettling tales of Edogawa Rampo, Japan’s revered master of the macabre. Featuring four distinct shorts, each helmed by directors from vastly different artistic disciplines, Rampo Noir is an electrifying exploration of Rampo’s “erotic grotesque” imagination.
The anthology opens with Mars’s Canal, a surreal and haunting experience crafted by music video director and visual artist Suguru Takeuchi. Set against a barren landscape, this introspective short examines a man’s psyche as it reflects back at him, both literally and figuratively, from a circular pond. Its minimalistic yet potent imagery is a compelling dive into existential dread.

Recent Golden Globe winner Demi Moore strengthened her chances at an Oscar nomination with her lead performance nod Wednesday morning for “The Substance.” Pamela Anderson followed up her Golden Globe nomination with another surprise one for her lead performance in “The Last Showgirl.” In that highly competitive best actress category, notable snubs included Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) and Golden Globe winner...

The Golden Globe awards took place this last weekend, and to the surprise of no one, FX's feudal Japan drama Shōgun took home several awards. The show won Best Drama Series, Hiroyuki Sanada (Yoshii Toranaga) won Best Drama TV Actor, Tadanobu Asano (Kashigi Yabushige) won Best TV Supporting Actor, and Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) beat out House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy to take home the win for Best Drama TV Actress. Regardless of the competition, Shōgun was such a pitch perfect show that you'd have been crazy to bet against it.
Part of the reason Shōgun was so effective was that it told a complete, extremely powerful story; the show was designed as a limited series and covered the entirety of the classic 1975 novel by James Clavell. That's a huge advantage over a show like, say, Squid Game, which ended its second season on a massive cliffhanger...

Audiences are going to have quite a bit of waiting to do before Season 2 of Shōgun, as the upcoming installment is still being written.
Co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Justin Marks told reporters backstage at the Golden Globes on Sunday night that he and the writers are “about six weeks from the end of the writers’ room” on Season 2.
Marks and the rest of the cast and crew remained quiet on any details regarding the new season, or when production will begin. Deadline reported in May that the writers room was assembled last year and began over the summer.
Shōgun concluded its awards season run with a big night at the Golden Globes, securing wins including Best TV Drama Series and acting trophies for defending Emmy champs Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai and also Tadanobu Asano, who lost the Emmy to The Morning Show‘s Billy Crudup. See a full...

With last night's Golden Globe win for Best Actor in an anthology, limited series, or TV movie for his lead performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, Colin Farrell joins the very small circle of just three actors who have been honoured at the awards ceremony for playing comic book villains - and their characters all happen to be Batman foes.
Farrell was asked about joining the late Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix, who both previously won Golden Globes for their respective portrayals of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and Todd Phillips' Joker.
“You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by," the Irish actor tells Variety. Shōgun season 2's writing gets a positive update from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks after its Golden Globe wins. While the end of Shōgun season 1 finished adapting James Clavell's 1975 novel, its massive success on Hulu and FX prompted the development of season 2, continuing the story from where the season 1 finale left off. Its success continued at the Golden Globes, winning four awards for Best Television Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Actress (Anna Sawai) in the Drama category, alongside Best Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano) in Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
While speaking during a Golden Globes press conference, where ScreenRant was in attendance, Kondo and Marks offered a positive update on Shōgun season 2's writing. The creators confirmed the writing team is hard at work crafting the follow-up to the series, with just six weeks left before the scripts are complete. The 82nd Golden Globe Awards were a lively celebration of different kinds of people and great acts. The night’s top film winners were Netflix’s Spanish-language song Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist immigrant story. The night’s top TV winners were the historical drama Shōgun.
Emilia Pérez led the evening, winning four awards, including Best Picture—Musical or Comedy. The film was nominated for ten awards and won three. Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Female Actor. Saldaña’s win was especially impressive because she beat out co-star Selena Gomez and Wicked star Ariana Grande.

Inside the Beverly Hilton at Sunday’s Golden Globes provided a dramatically different viewing experience from anything you saw on television. Gold Derby’s reporters were stationed throughout the room, the backstage area, and, yes, the bar to record all the key moments that weren’t broadcast by CBS’ camera crews.
Here’s the best of what we saw.
Serious security
In the wake of the New Orleans terrorist attack, the level of security at the Globes was unprecedented. The streets surrounding the Beverly Hilton were cleared of vehicles and there was a more pronounced police presence from years past. The shuttle ferrying production crew, publicists, and media from the off-site lot to the Hilton had to navigate a circuitous route through and around secruity, making the normally 2-minute trip into a 20-minute odyssey.

Sunday’s 2025 Golden Globes was yet another disappointing night for Oscar hopeful Anora.
Though the Palme d’Or-winning film from Sean Baker went into the evening with five nominations, tied with The Substance — which won best actress in a musical or comedy for star Demi Moore — Anora went home empty-handed.
Other films with multiple Golden Globe nominations that were shut out Sunday night include four-time nominee The Wild Robot, which had been expected by some pundits to win the best animated feature category; three-time nominee A Complete Unknown, though star Timothée Chalamet got some love during host Nikki Glaser’s monologue; and double nominees All We Imagine as Light, The Apprentice, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2 and The Last Showgirl.

After a year of actual normalcy (one without strikes or a pandemic), Hollywood is back to its regularly scheduled programming, which includes a fun and frenzied Golden Globes. The enjoyable but unserious cousin of the awards shows has finally found its stride, post-Hollywood Foreign Press Association scandals. Following an absolute dud of a ceremony last January, the Golden Globes righted its wrongs by offering nominees and viewers something both wholly different and beautifully familiar.
Comedian Nikki Glaser, the first solo female host in the show’s history, dived right in with a strong and quippy opening monologue. The ex-“FBoy Island” host covered a wide range of topics, including the 2024 Presidential election results and the #MeToo movement, and was vibrant and zingy from the moment she opened her mouth. Glaser quickly pressed on everything from Timothée Chalamet’s sparse mustache to “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s viral holding space interview.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards have wrapped and the complete 2025 Golden Globes winners list has been revealed. FX’s Shōgun continued its awards sweep from the Emmys at the Golden Globes, winning the Best Television Series – Drama category in addition to Lead Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada, Lead Actress for Anna Sawai and Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano.
Unlike the Emmys, where FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel competed as a drama and the 1980 NBC take as a miniseries, at the Globes both incarnations were classified as drama series, so Season 1 of the FX saga took the same Drama Series category its predecessor did 44 years ago.
Just as he did at the Emmys, Justin Marks, Shōgun co-creator, executive producer and showrunner alongside his wife, Rachel Kondo, accepted the top drama award. He framed his speech with an amusing domesticity anecdote.
“Yesterday, Rachel and I were scouring the ferns of our house looking for a 50-pound tortoise that we adopted for some reason that keeps escaping.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards had several major surprises and snubs. Held at the historic Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the 2025 Golden Globes were hosted by comedian and television host Nikki Glaser. Glaser was recently a standout guest on Netflix's The Roast of Tom Brady. Early presenters at the Globes included Dwayne Johnson, Demi Moore, Ke Huy Quan, Kathy Bates, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Miles Teller. Among the biggest Golden Globe predicted movie winners are The Brutalist, Anora, Emila Perez, and Conclave.
The night opened with predictable winners in the Female Supporting Actor and Female Actor in a Television Series, which went to Zoe Saldaña and Jean Smart, respectively. Hiroyuki Sanada of Shōgun brought home the Best Actor in a Television Drama award after winning the Emmy in the same category last year. Jeremy Allen White won his third Best Actor Golden Globe for his celebrated performance in The Bear.

Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony greatly boosted winners such as Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, and The Brutalist — and dealt difficult losses to nominees like Mikey Madison, Angelina Jolie, and Timothee Chalamet.

Surprise: Demi Moore wins Best Musical/Comedy Actress for The Substance
Mubi strategically chose to submit The Substance as a musical/comedy when the body-horror satire seemed like a long shot for serious drama consideration. On Sunday, Moore pulled off the upset over heavily favored Mikey Madison for Anora and gave the kind of acceptance speech that could launch her to an eventual Oscar win. “I’ve been doing this a long time, over 45 years, and this is the first...

On Sunday, Moore pulled off the upset over heavily favored Mikey Madison for Anora and gave the kind of acceptance speech that could launch her to an eventual Oscar win. “I’ve been doing this a long time, over 45 years, and this is the first...

First-time Emmy winner Anna Sawai is now also a first-time Golden Globe winner for her tole as Toda Mariko in the FX series Shōgun. She joined fellow Japanese actress Yôko Shimada who won the Golden Globe in the same category in 1981 for playing the same role in NBC’s miniseries adaptation of James Clavell’s novel. Overall, Sawai is the third actress of Asian decent to take home the Lead Actress in a Drama Series Golden Globe, alongside Shimada and Sandra Oh, a 2019 winner for Killing Eve.
Admitting she has “so much people to thank,” Sawai kept her speech short.
“Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” she said, referencing fellow nominee in her category Bates, recognized for her starring role on CBS’ Matlock. (Bates had been seen ripping up her acceptance speech after Sawai’s name was announced.

Shōgun took home the Best Television Series Drama award at the Golden Globes on Sunday, sweeping all four categories for which the historic epic was nominated. The FX series, a fan favorite among television critics, was up against other hit dramas: The Diplomat, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Squid Game, and The Day of the Jackal.
As showrunner Justin Marks accepted the award, he delved into the duality of searching for his newly adopted 50-pound tortoise around his home the day before and standing on stage in front of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.

Anna Sawai gave a very brief victory speech after winning her first Golden Globe, claiming the award for best female actor in a TV drama for her performance in the FX drama “Shōgun.”
“Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” Sawai said, referencing her competitor who was nominated for “Matlock.”
“Thank you to our incredible writers. Without a good script, it’s impossible to give a performance to our fullest potential. Thank you to everyone else. I’m going to thank you later!” Sawai concluded.
In “Shōgun,” Sawai plays Toda Mariko, a highborn woman who serves as a translator between the Japanese ruler Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the English mariner John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). She beat Bates (“Matlock”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) in the category.

Break out the brooms because Shōgun swept the Golden Globes on Sunday, converting all four of its nominations — Best Drama Series, Best TV Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best TV Drama Actress for Anna Sawai, and Best TV Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano — into wins. The FX epic’s victories in the drama categories replicated the same haul the original 1980 series nabbed.
At the 38th Golden Globes in 1981, NBC’s adaptation of James Clavell‘s novel also pulled off a clean sweep but in just those three categories: drama series, actor for Richard Chamberlain, and actress for Yoko Shimada. Chamberlain played John Blackthorne, who was portrayed by Cosmo Jarvis in the FX version. Shimada played Sawai’s role, Toda Mariko.
The Og Shōgun was the first show in Golden Globes history to win all three drama categories. Other shows that have since achieved this are The X-Files in 1997, The Sopranos...

“Shōgun” proves triumphant, capping off an awards season run that includes wins for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year from the Television Critics Association, and now the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Drama.
The FX/Hulu historical series based on the novel by James Clavell seized the top award on Sunday, beating out Netflix’s “The Diplomat” and “Squid Game,” as well as Amazon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”
“Shōgun” wins for its first season, with Seasons 2 and 3 now in early development. It was initially conceived as a miniseries, just as the 1980 adaptation featuring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune had been, but as a result of the show’s strong critical reception and viewership around the globe, FX/Hulu decided to expand the narrative into at least two more seasons.
