Dominic Carisi was going to be at the forefront of Law & Order: Svu's winter premiere. The Assistant D.A. has been part of the show for years, but his closeness to the most recent case makes him even more essential than usual. Unfortunately, this closeness has done a number on him psychologically.

The character was caught up in a hostage situation in the fall finale, and forced to watch as innocent people died. He was then forced to trick the perpetrators into taking each other out. It was technically a success for him, in that he got out alive, but the ramifications are still being felt by the character as he rolled into the winter premiere.

Kelli Giddish’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit exit may not have been her choice after all.

Just days after the actress’ stunning announcement she was leaving the series, a Variety report indicates the decision to write out Amanda Rollins was actually made by higher-ups within NBC.

Giddish leaving the series after 12 seasons was a surprise with little to indicate she wanted to leave the role she clearly enjoyed.

According to the report, the issues involved salary disputes and a decision to “freshen up” the series.

Mariska Hargitay reportedly fought to keep Giddish on alongside at least one producer, but the decision was out of the hands of both her and new showrunner David Graziano.

It throws new light on the sudden departure as it now appears writing out Rollins was not the actress’ choice but forced on her.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s showrunner is speaking out about losing a huge star.

When Kelli Giddish broke the surprising news she would be leaving the series after 12 seasons as Amanda Rollins, fans naturally reacted with shock and dismay.

Among those commenting on Giddish’s announcement was new showrunner David Graziano who also hinted there might have been more behind the actress’ departure than fans knew.

There have also been rumors of how the character will be written out, which sadly may be due to a personal tragedy.

While most of Giddish’s co-stars are silent, Ice-t did hint that he’ll be staying on the show for some time.

As the fallout of Giddish’s announcement continues, the question remains of how the series will handle Rollins’ exit...

While Velasco, who only joined the Svu squad this season, took a while to earn the approval of veteran cop Fin Tutuola (Ice-t), when Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) recommends him for the assignment, Stabler is impressed with his work.

“They actually get along great,” Pisano told TheWrap of Stabler and Velasco’s working relationship. “They both have backgrounds in organized crime. He’s been in that world before, so I think Stabler saw that and appreciated it.”

News that Demore Barnes will reprise his role as Christian Garland in an upcoming episode of season 23. The actor teased his return to the NBC series on March 21, captioning an Instagram pic, "What? Barnes' last Svu episode was the season 23 premiere episode, "Never Turn Your Back on Them," which aired on Sept. 23, 2021. A familiar face will be returning to Law & Order: Svu. Demore Barnes, who portrayed Deputy Chief Christian Garland in the NBC procedural, will return to reprise the role in an upcoming episode, Deadline has confirmed.

Garland joined the series in the 21st season as a recurring and was promoted to series regular in Season 22. He exited the series in the second half of the Season 23 premiere, “Never Turn Your Back On Them”. Barnes’ Garland had left his job after disagreeing with higher-ups about the way police misconduct was being handled in a controversial case.

Barnes was recently spotted filming scenes in NYC for the drama series, leading to questions about his return, first reported by Give Me My Remote. He will appear in the April 28th episode.

At the time of his departure, Barnes said he was in the dark about why his character had been written out of the show.

If you’ve been missing (former) Deputy Chief Christian Garland (Demore Barnes) as much as we have — especially as Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) clashes with Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico), who’s temporarily taking over his job until a permanent replacement is named — you’re going to love this news about Law & Order: Svu. Barnes is set to guest star this season, according to Give Me My Remote. We’ll have to wait to find out what brings Garland back and in what capacity he’ll be interacting with Benson and the rest of the Svu squad. “What? Give Me My Remote reports that Demore Barnes will return to Law & Order: Svu later this season.

Little is known about the return, but maybe it will lead to some closure for Deputy Chief Christian Garland.

Barnes first appeared on Law & Order: Svu Season 21, and was promoted to series regular the following season.

However, the star exited at the beginning of Law & Order: Svu Season 23 alongside Jamie Gray Hyder, who played Kat Tamin.

"I know you’re sad and surprised — I am, too,” Barnes shared on Instagram in September.

“I don’t totally know why this has happened,” the star continued in the statement.

Barnes said that he was “so very proud to have played the first Black deputy chief in Svu history.”

We’ll be seeing more of Octavio Pisano on Law & Order: Svu. Pisano, who portrays Detective Joe Velasco, has been promoted to series regular on the NBC procedural.

Pisano’s Joe Velasco is a former undercover and detective under Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) who’s been assigned to the Svu. Pisano has appeared in 3 episodes so far, beginning with the season 23 premiere.

Season 23 picked up mere hours after last season’s finale, where Catalina Machado (Zabryna Guevara) was arrested for trafficking single mothers living in shelters in a complex housing-for-sex scheme. She now wants to flip on her superiors in exchange for a deal with the feds, and names a powerful congressman as the big fish. It’s a make-or-break case for the NYPD and puts enormous pressure on the entire Svu squad to get a conviction.

I knew that both Kat and Deputy Chief Garland were slated to leave, but it still hurt.

Law & Order: Svu Season 23 Episode 2 was making a point about the difficulty of standing up to the ultra-powerful. But was the sacrifice of both these characters worth it?

I was never Kat's biggest fan. She could be impulsive and had a tendency to get carried away by passion and accuse more veteran members of Svu of not caring enough when a case slipped through their fingers because of evidentiary problems or political concerns.

But as her final hour with Svu began, she seemed far more toned down. She struggled to pressure a witness but seemed far more a part of the team than she ever had before.
