The commonly accepted wisdom among "Star Wars" fans is that Irvin Kershner's 1980 film "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back" is the best film in the "Star Wars" canon. Many appreciate its relatively dour tone and po-faced sense of panic. "Empire" carried over the characters from "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" and took them more seriously. In George Lucas' original 1977 film, the characters played out as broad archetypes. In "Empire," they were depicted as depressed, struggling, injured, panicked, or standing on the cusp of wisdom. They became deeper and more human.
Also, "Empire" expanded the role of fan-favorite character Darth Vader from a threatening lieutenant into the right-hand man of the Emperor (who was played by Elaine Baker and voiced by Clive Revill in the original version of "Empire" before Ian McDiarmid replaced them both...

Robert Watts, the British producer and production manager who collaborated with George Lucas on the first three Star Wars films and the first three Indiana Jones movies, has died. He was 86.
Watts died Monday in his sleep at his home in East Sussex, England, his rep, Julian Owen at Alliance Agents, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We were with him for a decade taking him to conventions all over the world, where he could connect with fans and talk about his career,” Owen said.
Watts also worked alongside Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg on the Spielberg-produced Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991).
For the extremely challenging first Star Wars film, Watts served as production supervisor under production designer John Barry, and the two traveled to Morocco and Tunisia to scout locations. He then did some third-unit directing.

A new piece of Star Wars art pays tribute to the late James Earl Jones and some of the franchise's other legends. James Earl Jones died on September 9 at the age of 93. Jones is perhaps best known for providing the voice of Darth Vader in the original trilogy of Star Wars movies, and for several other stories later in the franchise's history. The mark both James Earl Jones and Darth Vader have left on the Star Wars timeline can't be quantified, and his death is a true tragedy. Jones' passing has also inspired several Star Wars fans to memorialize him, sometimes through art.
Now, digital artist guiille__ has created a piece of art that imagines Jones with several other Star Wars icons who have passed away.

The world is mourning James Earl Jones, but no one more than the co-stars who loved him along the way, like Mark Hamill.
Star Wars catapulted both Mark and James into film history forever, as they shared the screen during perhaps one of the biggest twists in cinematic history.
Following the news of James’ passing, Mark was among the first to release a statement mourning the loss, not just for himself, but the world at large.

George Lucas returned to the galaxy far, far away to complete his epic space opera saga with the prequels that detail the backstory of Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader. The prequels explore the rise of the Empire and the fall of the Jedi, with the Clone Troopers playing a crucial role in the overall storyline of this particular era.

In the third installment of the prequels Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Lucas brought back actor Temuera Morrison to play some of the Clone Troopers following his performance as Jango Fett in the earlier installment. However, Lucas quickly realized that Morrison was too old for the part and came up with an inventive solution to resolve the issue.

The Mandalorian season 3 pays tribute to Boba Fett's legacy with intentional parallels to classic scenes. Boba Fett's enduring popularity paved the way for the Mandalorians to become a crucial part of the Star Wars universe. Easter eggs honoring Jeremy Bulloch's role in Star Wars are subtly woven into The Mandalorian without disrupting the story.
The Mandalorian season 3 subtly paid tribute to Jeremy Bulloch, the actor who physically portrayed Boba Fett in the original Star Wars trilogy. Despite the characters limited role in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett became a Star Wars icon. The mystery behind the helmet and the characters Mandalorian armor, as well as his intimidating demeanor, spawned hundreds of fan theories and pivotal pieces of Star Wars lore. Without Boba Fetts memorable appearance, the Mandalorians would arguably never have become a central part of the Star Wars mythos.

"Star Wars" is very unique even in and amongst other major franchises. One thing that stands out is that even minor characters with mere seconds of screen time can achieve some form of infamy in the greater pop culture consciousness. Boba Fett, played by actor Jeremy Bulloch, remains the best example of this. But Amy Allen experienced her own version of this phenomenon when she played the Twi'lek Jedi Master Aayla Secura in George Lucas' prequel trilogy.
Aayla appeared in both "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith," though she traces her roots back to the pages of the "Star Wars" comics published by Dark Horse in the early 2000s, having appeared on the cover of "Star Wars" #33 in 2001 as part of the "Darkness" arc, for example. So, how did Allen come to bring the Jedi to life on the big screen? The actress explained to Tatooine Times...

The world's many Starwoids will likely be able to tell you that Boba Fett's costume was originally conceived as the armor for an elite squad of Empire Stormtroopers that were to be called Super Troopers, an army that was to be featured in the 1980 "Star Wars" sequel "The Empire Strikes Back." The documentary film "Under the Helmet" has early test footage of the Super Trooper armor, and it was originally meant to be flat white. It turns out, sadly, that "Empire" didn't have the budget to build the 100 Super Trooper suits they wanted, so the prototype suit was painted maroon and olive and given to the bounty hunter character Boba Fett. The suit was worn by actor Jeremy Bulloch.

Boba Fett is, inarguably, one of the most beloved characters in "Star Wars" history. That's no small thing, given that the franchise also includes half a dozen (or more) pop culture icons. Perplexingly, the fan-favorite bounty hunter had very little screen time in the original trilogy and didn't have a solo project until "The Book of Boba Fett" arrived in 2022. For years, it was one of the finest examples of "less is more" ever committed to film. The man under the helmet was Jeremy Bulloch, and the actor will forever be tied to that role. And, as it just so happens, Bulloch kind of just lucked his way into the role.
Bulloch did a Reddit Ama back in 2014. At one point, a fan asked the actor how the role of Boba Fett was pitched to him. Indeed, the actor appeared as Fett in "The Empire Strikes Back," but it's not...

Many kids dream of one day getting to play a superhero/villain in a major Hollywood motion picture. The thing is, while it must be incredibly edifying to see yourself performing fantastic feats on the big screen via the assistance of wires and computer-generated effects, actually making these movies can be a slow, arduous undertaking.
While film production in general is often a frustratingly piecemeal process, it gets particularly drawn out when you're dealing with people in complex make-up and tremendously uncomfortable costumes. There are myriad horror stories of actors getting stuffed into suffocating suits that can't be donned or removed easily. You may look and move like Batman in the finished film, but, on set, you feel more like Frankenstein's monster.

Over the course of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi," the masked character of Boba Fett only has four lines of dialogue and six and a half minutes of screentime. Add in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," and the character suddenly had 20 additional lines. Either way, he was not a major player in "Star Wars," and ultimately fell into the mouth of a Shai Hulud on Arrakis a Sarlacc on Tattooine. It wasn't until the decade-and-a-half following the release of 1983's "Jedi" that Boba Fett would come to be admired by Starwoids who watched the "Star Wars" movies dozens of times each. In the "Star Wars" prequel films released from 1999 to 2005, Boba Fett was given a mythic backstory, and in 2021, he became the star of his own TV series.

A fun piece of trivia: the "Star Wars" character Boba Fett, prior to his inclusion in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" -- which didn't air until November 17, 1978 -- made a live appearance in a parade in the San Anselmo County Fair the previous September. The parade may have been before the character had been given a name, and "Star Wars" fans were tantalized to see a new, mysterious figure walking down the street next to Darth Vader. It was the first appearance of Boba Fett.
The stoic, faceless, and largely mute character, because of his cool helmet, became a fan favorite over the years, and Boba Fett's importance has grown since 1978 to the point where he got his own TV series. Boba Fett has been played by many actors over the years. In "Empire" and in "Return of the Jedi," Jeremy Bulloch wore the suit, while Jason Wingreen played his voice.

For a character that first appeared in animation in the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and had only a few lines in "The Empire Strikes Back," Boba Fett did pretty well for himself. If you're a "Star Wars" fan, you've likely had discussions about the craziness of how a brilliant costume design ended up taking Boba Fett from a side character to a fan favorite with his own series.

Boba Fett has been played by multiple actors throughout his 40-year history in the Star Wars franchise, ranging from voice actors to physical performers. Jeremy Bulloch is best known for physically portraying Boba Fett in the original Star Wars trilogy, while Jason Wingreen provided his voice in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. While Pedro Pascal will now and forever be associated with "The Mandalorian," as he has helped bring the title character of the beloved "Star Wars" show to life, the actor is only owed partial credit these days. Pascal has confirmed that he is mostly just providing the voice for Mando these days, with the rest of the team doing the heavy lifting on set. So for those who may have been wondering how much time Pascal spends on set, the answer seems to be close to none at all.
Pascal recently participated in a roundtable with several other actors for The Hollywood Reporter, including Kieran Culkin ("Succession") and Jeff Bridges ("The Old Man"). During the conversation, was asked how he balanced being in both "The Last of Us" and "The Mandalorian." Long before George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he actually considered making a live-action Star Wars TV show of his own. Star Wars: Underworld served as the working title for Lucas’ ambitious project. While very few details about the plot were ever announced, preproduction on the show went a lot further than most people realize. Set between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Underworld was meant to act as a bridge between the two trilogies. But due to budget constraints, Star Wars: Underworld was ultimately put on hold in 2010, and then officially canceled in 2012.
Star Wars: Underworld would have primarily taken place in the lower levels of Coruscant, and it would have followed mostly new characters in the Star Wars universe. According to Lucas, around 50 hours (2 seasons) of his planned 100 hour show were scripted. In several ways, the series sounded similar to...

Listen, what I'm about to tell you should be no surprise to two groups: hardcore "Star Wars" nerds and the terminally ancient fanboy, both terms which describe your dedicated writer. But something to consider is that "Star Wars" fandom has evolved since I was a kid. The original trilogy is no longer the agreed-upon "Star Wars" gold standard anymore. You have the kids who grew up on the prequels, and they prefer those films, much to the frustration of us oldies.

As the middle chapter of George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy (the "Ot"), "The Empire Strikes Back" was designed to leave moviegoers wanting more. Unlike the first movie, the sequel paid homage to the serialized cliffhanger style of storytelling that inspired the saga -- but quite unlike those Saturday matinee serials, the next installment wasn't a week away. When viewers walked out of "Episode V," they were facing a three-year wait for the trilogy's resolution.
And many of them were steamed.
Lucas played particularly rough with his newfound fanbase in "Empire." Darth Vader dished out a lightsaber whuppin' to the saga's Jedi-in-training protagonist, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), slashing off the youngster's hand and informing him that he is, in fact, his father. But Luke got off relatively easy compared to Harrison Ford's Han Solo. The interstellar rogue got placed in suspended animation via carbonite, and was ferried back to...

Lucasfilm’s latest Star Wars streaming series, Andor, has been praised for its cast’s nuanced performances, from Diego Luna’s thrilling work in the title role to Stellan Skarsgård’s fierce portrayal of Rebel bankroller Luthen Rael to Genevieve O’Reilly’s poignant turn as Mon Mothma, torn between her duties as an Imperial senator and her secret work with the Rebellion.
O’Reilly is hardly the first actor to put her own personal stamp on a Star Wars role played by a different actor. This meticulous docu-drama is still the best show about the Titanic, the awesome disaster that has never lost its grip on the imagination. Roy Ward Baker leads an enormous cast of Brit character actors through 2.5 hours of true-life terror in the icy Atlantic — Kenneth More, Honor Blackman, David McCallum, Laurence Naismith, Anthony Bushell. No stupid subplots and no insulting anachronisms, just an awful sinking death trap and 1600 passengers facing the freezing water. [Imprint] brings some new extras to the mix, too.

Since his introduction to the "Star Wars" canon nearly 45 years ago, a huge part of the allure and subsequent popularity surrounding Boba Fett was due to his character's mystery. Fett's favoritism developed first in an aesthetic sense, with his awesome armor, super cool ship, inexplicable ability to put Darth Vader on edge, and an incredibly rad helmet design. In the original trilogy, we never see what Boba Fett looks like under his armor, and despite the character's "death," Boba Fett...

It’s a Disney+ show almost 40 years in the making, and not just because the pre-Disney canon had already established Boba survived the sarlacc pit, but because the villain always seemed destined for something bigger than his six-ish minutes of screen time and four lines of dialogue in the Original Trilogy.
Boba is a great example of the kind of zeitgeist-grabbing myth-making that has made Lucasfilm such a successful movie studio over the last 50 years. As with other memorable Lucasfilm icons, including Indiana Jones, the studio put a lot of time into designing the bounty hunter. In fact, the creation of Boba Fett is emblematic of Lucasfilm’s signature approach to character building and the massive success of that process.
Before 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, there was already Boba Fett.

1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special is known for many things: continuing the adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie; introducing fans to Life Day and Chewie’s son, Lumpy; and being an all-around terrible TV special. But it also marked the first onscreen appearance of one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars: Boba Fett.
In the animated portion of the special, the heroes first meet Boba as an ally, a mysterious man in imposing armor who offers to help Han and Chewie after they crash on a dangerous moon in the Panna system. But we soon learn of this Good Samaritan’s true allegiance — he’s working for Darth Vader and the Empire. It’s this backstory that would later inform Boba’s first live-action appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, in which he’s hired by Vader to track down the Millennium Falcon in order to set...

"Despite his lack of screen time, next to no dialogue – he's everywhere." Disney has revealed the official trailer for their exciting 20-min documentary special called Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett. This fun film is a look back at how awesome Boba Fett is, not only in the original trilogy and especially Return of the Jedi, but how much fans have turned him into an iconic bounty hunter over the years. It's also a promotion for the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett series on Disney+, which is picking up where they left off in The Mandalorian and Rotj, with Fett taking over the Hutt's realm on Tatooine. In the original Rotj, Fett was played by British actor Jeremy Bulloch. In the prequels, Temuera Morrison played his father Jango, with Daniel Logan as a younger Boba. And now Temuera Morrison is taking over for the upcoming Book of Boba Fett series.

Star Wars toys remain one of the venerable franchise’s most reliable metrics when it comes to assessing the enduring sustainability of its films and television shows, and also accurately identifies which characters continue to capture the imaginations of fans young and old alike. However, the miniaturized medium is occasionally used as a tribute to some of the franchise’s esteemed behind-the-scenes personnel. Indeed, Hasbro has just revealed that the latest recipient of this honor is none other than The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni.
Amongst Hasbro’s reveals for its heralded PulseCon 2021 toy event was a Star Wars The Black Series 6” scale action figure for The Mandalorian‘s New Republic pilot, Trapper Wolf. To the layperson, the figure would appear to be just a generic representation of a body-mold-recycled Rebel pilot, which begs the question as to why it’s getting the deluxe treatment, sold for $29.99, which is well above...

“Put Captain Solo in the cargo hold—of my, uh…starship?”
Boba Fett’s signature Slave I ship has apparently lost its name in the official Star Wars canon, as indicated by Disney’s alleged recent request to the Lego company regarding a new toy rendition of the ship. Intriguingly, with the direction of merchandising—specifically toys—sometimes proving to be a leading indicator for imminent onscreen developments, it’s quite feasible that the revocation of the ship’s name might be confirmed onscreen on the bounty hunter’s upcoming Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett.
“Boba Fett’s Starship” is the generic name that will adorn the box of an upcoming Lego set (contrasting with previous releases) inspired by the hitherto Slave I’s exciting appearance on the second season of The Mandalorian. Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

Boba Fett, one of the most mysterious characters in the Star Wars franchise with one of the largest fanbases, lived on in the minds of imaginative fans long after he was presumably eaten by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi. After his death, fans only had the novels, video games, and comic books of the Star Wars Legends catalog to follow the adventures of their favorite bounty hunter, never knowing that decades later, The Mandalorian would bring him blazing back into their lives.

Stage and screen actor who played the bounty hunter Boba Fett in the Star Wars films
Jeremy Bulloch, who has died aged 75, was a busy character actor who staked a claim for cinematic immortality by playing the inscrutable Boba Fett in the Star Wars films. A masked, enigmatic bounty hunter with a jet pack and distinctive costume design, Boba Fett debuted in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), capturing and carbon-freezing Han Solo (Harrison Ford) in order to convey him to the slug-like paymaster Jabba the Hutt.
Despite relatively limited screen time and dialogue (his few lines were post-dubbed by the American actor Jason Wingreen), both Bulloch and Boba Fett became much loved contributors to the franchise and he reprised the role in Return of the Jedi (1983). In the eventual Star Wars prequels Boba Fett was played by the child actor Daniel Logan, and so Bulloch was instead hired to play the...

It’s a sad irony that Boba Fett actor Jeremy Bulloch died mere hours before the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. Bulloch was under the helmet and armor in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, his performance helping make the bounty hunter one of the most interesting and enigmatic characters in Star Wars. The impact of his Boba Fett is keenly felt in the smash hit Disney+ show, too, with Temuera Morrison taking over the role to amazing effect and set to continue it in a dedicated spinoff.
Tributes have been flooding in from his Star Wars colleagues all week as well. Billy Dee Williams said “today we lost the best bounty hunter in the galaxy,” Mark Hamill described him as “the quintessential English gentleman” and Daniel Logan (who played the young Boba in Attack of the Clones) stated: “Conventions won’t be the same without you.

Boba Fett’s green, T-visored helmet is a menacing visage that’s nearly evocative of Star Wars as Darth Vader’s; one first embodied on film by actor Jeremy Bulloch, who, sadly, passed away on December 17 at the age of 75. However, the legacy that Bulloch leaves behind has proven far greater than a character with minimal screentime and dubbed lines seemingly had any right to possess. It’s a legacy to which hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian owes a great deal of thanks.
Bulloch, born in Leicestershire, England on February 16, 1945, wasted little time getting himself onscreen with uncredited roles—while still an adolescent—in 1958 films Violent Playground and Titanic tragedy movie A Night to Remember, continuing to work steadily for years in U.K.-aimed films and television shows. He fielded a notable four-episode 1974 run as Hal the Archer on Doctor Who (opposite Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor); his second run on the series,...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
From the very beginning, Boba Fett has inspired The Mandalorian. Showrunner Jon Favreau’s “toy box” approach pitched protagonist Din Djarin as a Boba Fett-like figure, and although the two are quite different in terms of personality and history, the iconic silhouette of the space western gunslinger is very similar.
But now Boba Fett himself is back in The Mandalorian season 2, played by none other than Temuera Morrison in a very brief cameo. At the very end of the season 2 premiere “The Marshal,” we find Boba watching from a hill as Mando rides off with his old armor, a scowl on the old bounty hunter’s face that would silence a krayt dragon. With all the Mandalorian history and bounty hunting on the show, it was only a matter of time before we finally got to see Boba in the flesh!

Although the prerelease theory that The Mandalorian would be about Boba Fett was long ago disproven, it turns out the bounty hunter might be part of the show after all! Ahead of the second season, word is that Boba Fett will be making an appearance, and the actor cast to play him couldn't be a more perfect fit.
According to The Wrap, actor Temuera Morrison will play Boba Fett during The Mandalorian's second season. It's a particularly meaningful piece of casting within the Star Wars universe, given the history of the character. In 2002's Attack of the Clones, Morrison played Jango Fett, the "father" of Boba Fett, who was technically a clone, not a biological son in the traditional sense. Jango Fett was a human bounty hunter who nonetheless wore Mandalorian armor - despite not actually being Mandalorian - and who worked for the Sith, eventually being killed by Jedi Master Mace Windu.

First, he was Jango Fett in “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones.” Now, Temuera Morrison is returning to the world of “Star Wars” as Boba Fett. The actor will portray the legendary bounty hunter (and clone of Jango) in Disney+’s upcoming “The Mandalorian” Season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Morrison will appear as Boba Fett in “just a small role” in the Disney+ title’s sophomore outing, which will premiere on the streaming service sometime in October.
A Disney+ spokesperson declined to confirm the news and a Lucasfilm spokesperson did not return a request for comment.
