The first live-action film adapted from the comic book “Teddy Boy” and written by Man Kai Ming, “Young and Dangerous” was a huge success and incredibly, within a few short months, its sequel hit the big screens. Again it became a massive hit which continued to generate more sequels and spin-offs.

By intercutting a series of flashbacks into the opening credits, director Lau is able to make his storyline flow smoothly and thus keeping his audiences up to date. Also by morphing the film's freeze frame image into the original comic, he ties in the storyline smoothly. Despite amassing a rather significant amount at the 1998 Hong Kong box office, reaching more than 41 million Hk$ in revenue, “The Storm Riders” was essentially a flop, since its budget was more than double that amount. This, however, did not prevent the movie from achieving cult status later on, particularly for its over-the-top action scenes and the imposing presence of Sonny Chiba.

Winner of the 1999 Golden Horse Award for Best Visual Effects, Andrew Lau's “A Man Called Hero” is a genuine wuxia film, which doubles intensely though, as a drama, in a rather appealing package that also benefits the most by the impressive cast. The movie would be a huge commercial success, amassing more than 23 million Hk dollars upon its release.

I confess, I don’t know as much of the work of the revered Johnnie To as I should. I remember seeing Election when it came out in UK cinemas, but I’m not sure that I’ve got round to anything else, so this latest set from Eureka should prove something of an education.

Cheung (Andy Lau) is dying. With just weeks left, he decides to play a game with Police and a local gangster, with the objective of stealing both a valuable necklace and the 5million the gangsters are willing to pay for it. It is fairly obvious where Running Out Of Time is drawing it major inspiration from. Michael Mann’s Heat pre-dates it by just a few years and the central relationship, while...

With the success of his predecessor becoming imminent, it was perhaps just a question of time before cinema audiences would be given a sequel to Johnnie To’s 1999 film “Running Out of Time”. Even though Andy Lau’s character is naturally out of the picture in this film, we have Lau Ching-wan reprising his role as Inspector Ho, who, once again, has to engage in a game of deception and trickery with a skilled thief. And although there is always a high risk of sequels not living up to their predecessors, “Running Out of Time 2” at least features some aspect which prooves the directors’ predilection for illusions, since they essentially create a film about the nature of performing.
Several years have gone by since Inspector Ho (Lau Ching-wan) had to face a criminal who would deceive him and make a game of evading being arrested. However, he...

No big revelations this year at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. The Sunday night ceremony has unveiled all the winners for this years Awards and they are all quite an easy guess. Felix Chong’s thriller “Project Gutenberg” was the star of the evening as, predictably – considering its 17 nominations – won Best Film along with other 6 Awards.
But despite the histrionic performances of Chow Yun-fat and Aaron Kwock, the acting Awards are not in the “Project Gutenberg”‘s pile. Anthony Wong took home the Best Actor award for his role as a middle-aged paralysed man in “Still Human“, and newcomer Chloe Maayan won Best Actress for Fruit Chan’s “Three Husbands”, while Kara Hui and Ben Yuen Foo-Wa scored Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor both for “Tracey“.

Unlike previous spin off Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996), Portland Street Blues (1998) is an official part of the franchise, involving a number of series stalwarts such as writer/producer Manfred Wong and executive producer Wong Jing. It also features cameos from the likes of Francs Ng, Ekin Cheng and Jerry Lamb portraying the roles they made famous in the main Young and Dangerous series. What sets Portland Street Blues apart from the main series is not only that it is one of the superior entries of the series, but that the main focus is on a female character in a usually male dominated genre. Portland Street Blues main focus is on the life of bisexual Triad member Sister 13 (Sandra Ng), who...

There will be spoilers within, so if you haven’t seen Young and Dangerous 3 yet, I would advise watching it before reading this. Coming hot on the heels of Young and Dangerous 2, the third entry in the series turns out to be one of the best and clears up some of the unresolved issues from the previous movie. The film begins a number of weeks after Young and Dangerous 2, with Ho Nam (Ekin Cheng) now branch leader of the Causeway Bay branch of the Hung Hing. Chicken (Jordan Chan) is also re-instated into the Hung Hing after his exploits with the Taiwanese Triads Sun Luen in the previous film. During this time, rival Triad gang Tung Sing are making a name for themselves....

Coming only two months after the release of the first film in the series, Young and Dangerous 2 actually improves on its predecessor. Young and Dangerous 2 focus more on the complexities of gang life, and is decidedly less comic in tone than the first entry in the series. Initially the main focus of the film is Chicken (Jordan Chan), and his adventures in Taiwan. Viewers will remember that in the first movie, Chicken had to flee Hong Kong and ended up in Taiwan. By the climax of the film he had returned as a gang boss in his own right, and backed up his friend Chan Ho Nam (Ekin Cheng) in the films finale. The first 40 minutes or so of Young and Dangerous...

Back in 2004 the Pang Brothers could do no wrong. It's been a long time since they've had a bona fide hit, but back in the day, Oxide and Danny were churning out more gems than eBay. Ab-normal Beauty had more than one trick up its sleeve. Not only was it a companion piece to Danny's Leave Me Alone, in which Ekin Cheng's character kills a girl in a car crash (the same car crash depicted in this movie) but it also stars sisters Race and Rosanne Wong - of 2R pop fame - as lesbian lovers. Jiney (Race) is a photography student. One day on her way to school she witnesses a car crash and, without hesitation, starts taking pictures of the incident. All of a sudden she is experiencing satisfaction like never before and finds herself becoming obsessed with photographing grisly death. Jas (Rosanne) is clearly concerned about her welfare,...

The Triads are back in “Young and Dangerous: Reloaded”, which sees producers Wong Jing and Manfred Wong returning to the hugely popular series following the fortunes of good looking gang upstarts. Though their quality might have been variable, the original films really were for many one of the standouts of 1990s Hong Kong genre cinema, the first instalment back in 1996 having been directed by Andrew Lau (“Infernal Affairs”) and having helped skyrocket the career of Ekin Cheng, along with co-stars Jordan Chan, Francis Ng, Gigi Lai and Simon Yam. And so, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that more than 15 years and some 10 (at last count) sequels and spin-offs later, a reboot now arrives, directed by Daniel Chan, who recently also dabbled with gang action in “Triad”, attempting to revisit the formula for a new generation. Taking on the all-important lead role is Him Law (“Hong Kong...

Based on a classic series of beloved books and plays, Ronny Yu's Saving General Yang is an old school wartime epic, starring veteran Hong Kong actor Adam Cheng as the titular General, and Ekin Cheng as the elest of his seven loyal sons who swear to rescue him.It looks to be a good year for Yu, who was recently named as the first choice to direct Silver Vase, Iron Knight, The Weinstein Company's sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Before all that, however, he must deliver this large scale period drama, which will most likely debut at next month's Hong Kong International Film Festival. A new trailer has surfaced out of Taiwan, and while it is unsubtitled, readers should have no difficulty in gleaning a...

One thing is very clear. General Yang had better be one very, very important man to justify the amount of carnage being carried out in his name in Ronnie Yu's Saving General Yang. One of Hong Kong's finest, Yu makes his return to the director's chair for the first time since 2006 Jet Li starrer Fearless. And he is back with a massive scale action spectacle. The story of the Yang's has been eulogized for hundreds of years in the Chinese society. It details the exploits of the Yang military family, recounting the unflinching loyalty of the Yang family heirs. The plot places focus on how the seven sons of the Yang family held hands in the rescue of their father...Ekin Cheng, Chun Wu, Vic Chou,...

Penned by original scriptwriter Manfred Wong, this reboot of the hugely popular series of 1990s movies - based on the comics of Cowman and Dickey Yau - sees Chan Ho Nam, Chicken and the rest of the boys take to the streets of Hong Kong to avenge the death of their boss, Brother Bee. Wong Jing returns with something a little more family friendly than his usual bawdy fare in “Treasure Hunt”, an adventure comedy which he wrote, produced, starred in and co-directed with Keung Kwok Man (“Bullet and Brain”). The film drummed up a fair bit of interest as a result of starring actress Cecilia Cheung, continuing her comeback after an absence of six years despite some well-publicised off screen family woes, and even pulling in her real life young son Lucas Tse for a cameo. Comedian Ronald Cheng shares top billing, with support from Wong Jing, Liu Hua (“The Butcher The Chef and The Swordsman”) and Shao Bing (“The Lost Bladesman”), with Ekin Cheng making a brief cameo appearance. The skimpy plot sees Cheung as top commercial director Peggy, who leaves behind her displeased husband (Ekin Cheng) and son (Lucas Tse) to shoot a milk powder advert on a supposedly deserted island...

There’s nothing quite like waking up bright and early to a some outrageous cinematic silliness. If you’re missing a little goofiness in your diet this morning, then take a quick peek at the teaser trailer for directors Jeffrey Lau and Susie Au’s “East Meets West 2011″. The upcoming superhero endeavor, which stars Karen Mok, Eason Chan, Alex Fong, Stephy Tang, Ekin Cheng, and Jaycee Chan, doesn’t look like it takes itself too seriously. Which is good, really, because the flick looks mind-numbingly stupid. In a good way, of course. Best to clear that up now. Need a plot synopsis? Good. You’re getting one: Ten thousand years ago eight gods fought incessantly, not realizing that by doing so they were securing their own demotion into the secular world. They can only return to heaven once they come to understand one another and can get along with each other harmoniously.

If you thought the weirdly engaging poster we posted a while back was beyond silly, take a peek at the “Treasure Hunt” trailers embedded below. The movie certainly looked action-packed, though it doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously. Given the history of Wong Jing’s productions, I’m going to assume that it’s painfully low on substance. Then again, with a name like “Treasure Hunt”, you shouldn’t expect award-winning cinema. You’ve been warned. The plot synopsis is hanging out right here: Peggy (Cecilia Cheung), the renowned charming director in the advertising industry, was married with a 3 years old son Lucas (Lucas Tse). She was persuaded by her boss to shoot an advertisement on a deserted island with the so-called “The Strongest Man in the Galaxy” kung fu master Mr. Big (Ronald Cheng), a notorious womanizer and his daughter Cissy (Lin Miao Ke). Andy (Ekin Cheng), Peggy’s husband,...

Once A Gangster stars two actors who are famous for their roles in the hugely popular Young And Dangerous films - Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan. Considering that the last Young And Dangerous film was made back in 2000, it is perhaps not surprising that Cheng and Chan are no longer looking very young or dangerous. And this is something that the filmmakers have cleverly made use of in this gangster satire. It's triad election time, but how times have changed! Gangsters Sparrow (Ekin Cheng) and Roast Pork (Jordan Chan) are the next in line to compete to become Head of the Wo Yee Sing Society, but they are now older and wiser, and no longer keen for the position. Released theatrically in Hong Kong 11 years after its predecessor, Storm Warriors is a sequel to the 1998 movie Storm Riders. Despite pretty boys Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok returning as the warriors Wind and Cloud, the two films split into two directions. Different directors, different visions.
The Pang Brothers take artistic influence to a new level. Each film they release seems to copy the style of a recently successful contemporary: Bangkok Dangerous reeks of Tsui Hark, The Eye follows the footsteps of Takashi Shimizu, and Storm Warriors blatantly looks like it was directed by a poor man’s Zack Snyder.
Shot extensively, though not entirely, on bluescreen, the film uses 300-style CGI backgrounds and its trademark annoying stop-start slow-motion action scenes; except it obviously has 1/10 of the budget so they just look like a daytime children’s program that has the human host dancing in front of a cartoon landscape. Film: ‘Storm Warriors’; Directors: Oxide Pang Chun, Danny Pang; Cast: Aarok Kwok, Ekin Cheng, Kenny Ho, Nicholas Tse, Simon Yam, Suet Lam; Rating: 1/2
There are films that excel because of their good storyline. There are others that do well because of their special effects. Then there’s the third category, that hang nowhere and belong nowhere, like ‘Storm Warriors’ and the audiences are left wondering what happened to the filmmakers who’ve made some good movies in the past.
The little of what you can gather of the story.
