The first new cast member of House of the Dragon Season 3 has been revealed. James Norton will join the HBO series as book character Ormund Hightower. He’s previously been seen in Grantchester and Happy Valley and will star alongside Game of Thrones alum Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the upcoming series King and Conqueror. The Targaryen civil war will take place over just two more seasons of House of the Dragon. HBO and series co-creator Ryan Condal announced on August 5, the day after the Season 2 finale, that the Game of Thrones prequel will end with Season 4. They also shared the first production update on Season 3. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. War has broken out between the two sides of the family after Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) usurped...

Author George R.R. Martin’s three-page outline sent to his publisher in 1993 revealed his original vision for A Song of Ice and Fire, and fans will be shocked to know how much was changed. One instance was Sansa Stark’s fate after marrying Joffrey Baratheon.

In Game of Thrones, the young Stark was only betrothed to the king until the latter eventually married Margaery Tyrell. Somehow, this saved Sansa from a future tragedy that would befall her, although it’s not the same misfortune she suffered in the show.

It's an understatement to say that a lot of characters on "Game of Thrones" meet some very, very ugly ends ... and that certainly includes Shae, the character played by Sibel Kekilli who appears in 20 episodes of the hit HBO fantasy series. Shae — who also appears in "A Song of Ice and Fire," the book series by George R.R. Martin that serves as the source material for the series — first shows up in season 1 of the show and sticks around until the end of season 4, where she meets that aforementioned ugly end ... but before that, she spends pretty much all of her time in the orbit of "the Imp," Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), a man whose family despises him nearly as much as he hates them in return. At first, Shae and Tyrion's relationship is actually really sweet and even romantic, but true love...

Game of Thrones is easily the biggest fantasy TV show of the 21st century, and a lot of other fantasy shows were greenlit at least in part because the studios hoped they could get a taste of its success. That applies to series like The Witcher on Netflix and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. Both of those shows are based on material that exists outside of Game of Thrones, but the success of the HBO show likely inspired the studios to invest money in adaptations.
Then there's The Wheel of Time, another Prime Video series. Fans have been waiting many years for someone to adapt Robert Jordan's massive fantasy series, which spans 14 books. Prime Video's show is about to enter its third season, and is still adding lots of new cast members. The latest batch includes actor Nukâka Coster-Waldau as Bair, a...

January is generally considered a dumping month when studios unload movies that they don’t have a lot of faith in, although some incredible horror films stand in the face of this supposition. While awards season tends to give accolades to films released toward the end of the year, some truly astounding horror movies have carved out impressive legacies despite coming out during January. Plenty of cult classics, surprise hits, and under-the-radar triumphs have proven that January isn’t a lost cause for releases.
Some of the best horrors ever made were surprisingly released in January and defied the longstanding idea that this was a bad time to put out a scary movie. It’s often good to go against the grain and take audiences by surprise during a release window that’s generally quiet when it comes to horror movies. It should also be noted that all following release...

How does every Gerard Butler Action Movie rank beside each other, with Den of Thieves hitting theaters in 2025? Butler trained initially to become a lawyer before a change of heart saw him pursue acting inside. Oddly, his breakthrough role came as the titular bloodsucker in Dracula 2000, a movie that didn't win over audiences or critics. He always seemed on the cusp of stardom without entirely tipping over. That changed significantly thanks to Zack Snyder's 300 in 2007, where his mega turn as King Leonidas instantly propelled him to the A-list.
Over the years, Butler has made everything from tender dramas like Dear Frankie to rom-coms with P.S. I Love You or animation with the Watchmen horror spinoff Tales of the Black Freighter. However, action has become Butler's stock-in-trade, whether fantasy blockbusters or gritty cop thrillers. The star has cornered the market in terms of fronting modestly budget, R-rated action...

This article contains spoilers for many major fantasy TV shows! For every unforgettable moment in a fantasy TV show, there are just as many controversial moments that push viewers to their breaking point. Even the most popular fantastical TV series in history have included scenes that were so polarizing that audiences stop watching the show altogether. Typically, these plot points revolve around the introduction or exit of characters, as this can dramatically alter the series' dynamic and be devastating to witness. TV deaths often spark outrage when viewers feel that the character didn't deserve to be killed off and still had more to contribute.
There are many fantasy TV scenes that make no sense, but this is more excusable, as the complex magic systems and world-building in speculative fiction shows can become confusing. However, when a series makes a concrete and avoidable choice that alienates audience members, it's much more difficult to accept this.

Ridley Scott sold the set of his 2005 movie for $10, only to pay $1 million to rent the set again fifteen years later. Scott has a dynamic directing career that began with the 1977 film The Duellists. His next movie, Alien, proved to be a breakout hit that launched a long-running franchise and remains one of Ridley Scott's best movies. Scott's next science-fiction film, Blade Runner, was critically divisive when it was released in 1982 and underperformed at the box office, but it is now considered to be a highly influential staple of the science-fiction genre.
Scott has made a lasting impact on other genres as well. His 1991 crime drama, Thelma and Louise, is still widely lauded as a powerful feminist film. A decade later, Scott's Black Hawk Down showcased the true horrors of war based on real events from the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. Scott has also helmed numerous movies that are historical epics,...

Fantasy is a versatile genre since the creation of new worlds and magic systems allows writers and creators to establish new rules and logic that suit the storyline. However, this doesn't mean that fantasy TV shows are immune from adding plot points that make no sense and don't help further the overall narrative. Many of these choices have to do with the character's choices being inconsistent or the series breaking its own rules about how the fantastical elements work. Since speculative fiction fans are willing to suspend their disbelief, these shows sometimes push the boundaries of logic too far.
There are plenty of fantasy movie scenes that make no sense, and TV series are just as susceptible to these mistakes. Often, these confusing moments happen because there are so many contradicting storylines or there's an external element that's out of the writers' control. To compensate for actors suddenly leaving or...

It’s always exciting when a TV show takes a massive risk that really pays off, but it can be insanely frustrating when these surprising writing decisions fall flat on their face. While huge twists, impulsive character decisions, or unusual storytelling choices can keep things interesting, they also have the potential to alienate audiences and lead to storylines that the writers opt to quietly discard rather than continue telling an unpopular plot. This has been a problem across comedy, drama, and even fantasy series that have tried something new with their storyline, only to have viewers flat-out reject the risk.
Many of the best TV shows of all time have taken massive risks, only for them to not work out and have to backtrack on their storylines. This has seen previously deceased characters inexplicably return to life, established backstories being badly rewritten, or even final seasons that ruined the legacy...

Fans were deeply disappointed with how things turned out at the end of Game of Thrones, and they are not alone – even Sophie Turner had the same sentiment, especially when it came to Arya Stark’s storyline. Portraying the Lady of Winterfell, Sansa Stark, Turner believes the season finale could have been more satisfying.

We know the major deaths that happened in the final season and Cersei Lannister’s was the most underwhelming. For years, fans have speculated how she would meet her end, and what happened in the show was clearly not on anyone’s list.

Avid fans of Game of Thrones certainly know the infamous story of the unaired pilot episode where everything went wrong. The narrative, as well as some of its cast members, did not work for the project in the way showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss hoped, so the next wisest thing to do was to scrap the episode.

Tyrion Lannister infamously killed his own father, Tywin Lannister, in Season 4 Episode 10 of Game of Thrones. This was one of the most seminal events in the show as the patriarch of the House Lannister dies at the hands of his own son, showing what years of abuse can do to a person.

James Norton has revealed he was set on playing William the Conqueror in upcoming Middle Ages drama series “King and Conqueror” but was thwarted by HBO, who had an option on the actor for another series.
Norton, who is also an executive producer on the upcoming BBC/CBS show about the iconic Battle of Hastings, was already starring in Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi series “The Nevers” when he began developing “King and Conqueror.” Under the terms of his HBO contract, he was not allowed to appear in another returning series, meaning his only option was to play Anglo-Saxon king Harold, who famously died on the battlefield in 1066 after being shot in the eye with an arrow.
“HBO said very clearly, ‘You can go and shoot “King and Conquer,” especially considering you’re an EP and you’re developing it, but you must die,” Norton revealed during a panel about “King and Conqueror” at U.

Sometimes casting can be a completely creative process and sometimes contracts can get in the way.
With CBS Studios’ upcoming King and Conqueror about Harold of Wessex and William the Conqueror, it was a fair bit of the latter.
Star James Norton revealed at Content London this morning that he initially wanted to play William who (spoiler alert) slays Harold at the great Battle of Hastings, but HBO had other ideas. At the time production was ramping up, Norton was starring in HBO series The Nevers, and HBO didn’t want him to commit too strongly to King and Conqueror. The get-out was obvious.
“[HBO] said you can go and do King and Conqueror but you must die because we can’t afford you to go for too long,” said Norton. “If it’s a hit they were worried there would be a conflict. That’s what often happens with actors’ contracts,...

“[HBO] said you can go and do King and Conqueror but you must die because we can’t afford you to go for too long,” said Norton. “If it’s a hit they were worried there would be a conflict. That’s what often happens with actors’ contracts,...

The morally misled world of Game of Thrones combines fantasy and realism in wicked ways, leaving the audience feeling disturbed and traumatized for days (even years) on end. But for those operating behind the scenes to bring George Rr Martin’s sweeping epic to life, the HBO show is simply their day job. For the fans, however, Game of Thrones represents a whole subculture.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau knows all of that – going so far as to produce a documentary on the rise of fan conventions – and yet finds the craze around the show somewhat difficult to comprehend. As far as the Danish actor is concerned, the role he spent almost a decade portraying failed to leave an impact on him when he closed the chapter on Jaime Lannister.
Perhaps it is his self-proclaimed cold-hearted cynicism that made Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stand up to another divisive subculture that dominates over the masses today.

Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn Martell met a grisly death in Game of Thrones after his duel with The Mountain, in which he agreed to be Tyrion Lannister’s champion during the trial by combat. It was one of the most intense and shocking events in the franchise that brought so much horror to the viewers.

This past Sunday, the Toronto Raptors faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Crypto.com Arena in L.A. It makes sense that stars and celebrities from nearby Hollywood occasionally show up to take in a basketball game, and maybe the Lakers are used to that kind of thing. But coming as he does from Canada, the North in real life, Raptors guard Rj Barrett was caught by surprise when he saw none other than Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) in the stands.
The moment is captured on film. Barrett makes a tricky shot, turns to the audience, spots Coster-Waldau sitting courtside, pauses, points, says "Game of Thrones?" and then gets back to business:

Let's be honest: not every "Game of Thrones" episode is a winner. Sure, the show's first four seasons are basically unimpeachable — and I think a strong argument can be made that, in the aftermath of a particularly bleak fifth entry, season 6 is actually really good — but the drop-off in quality when you get into the show's (frequently derided) later seasons is quite apparent, resulting in some really rough episodes. So, which ones are the absolute worst of the worst?
Because I can't nominate "all of season 7 and 8" for this dubious honor, I made some tough decisions and chose the five absolute crappiest "Game of Thrones" episodes, though there were some contenders I couldn't include here. Basically anything involving the Dorne plotline could have qualified, or anything involving the faceless assassin school in Braavos that beats the spirit out of Maisie Williams' Arya Stark. But installments like "No One" or "Mother's...

Major television deaths are almost always sad, but they're especially devastating when viewers barely get to spend time with the character in question. While the death of a longtime favorite dramatically impacts the show and its audience, the demise of smaller players can hit just as hard.
This is especially true when they've made a good impression, igniting hopes that they'll take on a more prominent role in the story. In some cases, they're met with an early end instead, leaving viewers to wonder what their character arc could have looked like if they'd lasted longer than a handful of episodes.
Syrio Forel (Miltos Yerolemou) Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
Game of Thrones' Syrio Forel is the perfect example of a fan-favorite character who makes an impression in just a few episodes. Syrio is introduced in season 1's "Lord Snow," when Ned tasks him with training Arya in the art of swordplay.

There have now been 2 seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the show seems to be missing something rather important, but there are 10 actors who could put that to rights. As the main character of The Rings of Power season 1, Morfydd Clark's Galadriel was notably short one husband. The Rings of Power never strictly adhered to its source material, the books by J.R.R. Tolkien. However, eradicating the main character's canonical husband to make way for a romance tease with her mortal enemy was a bold move.
Controversial but commercially successful, this move allowed sparkling chemistry to bloom between Clark and Sauron actor Charlie Vickers. Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay confirmed at Sdcc that "Celeborn will be back" (via Screen Rant), so Galadriel's husband is fully due for an appearance in The Rings of Power seasons 3, 4, or 5. The fantasy genre shines on television, as the episodic nature of TV shows allows for plenty of time to focus on world-building and magic systems while still providing character development. However, all the moving parts and expectations surrounding fantasy TV series make it difficult for a show to hit the mark in every aspect of the story. Common issues arise with fantasy TV shows that continue for too long, running out of ideas and growing repetitive before the finale. In a perfect show, there can't be any major problems or too many moments that make viewers quit the series.
Many of the best fantasy TV shows of the 2020s are almost perfect and could prove themselves to be the best of the 21st century before their stories end. More often than not, great fantasy shows are based on books, giving the seasons structure and providing a strong storyline for the script.

Jaime Lannister is known as the Kingslayer in Game of Thrones, but he would have been slaying as king if George R.R. Martin had stuck to his original plan for A Song of Ice and Fire. Jaime is one of the most complicated and fascinating characters in both the books and the TV show (where he was brilliantly played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as part of Game of Thrones cast). Indeed, few characters undergo the kind of transformation he does, with hidden layers among his backstory few would have guessed at early on.
Of course, things were muddied by his controversial Game of Thrones ending, where he died alongside his sister, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). But its his beginning thats more interesting. In 1993, Martin had an overall plan for A Song of Ice and Fire, providing a structure for what then intended to be a trilogy of books. In it, Jaime...

Westeros is filled with lousy fathers: Robert Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy, and the Wilding Craster who sells his sons (born from daughters he rapes) to the White Walkers. Worst of all, though, is Tywin Lannister (played by Charles Dance in the "Game of Thrones" TV adaptation). He treats none of his three children well; Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey), the visage of a perfect knight and queen but without the hearts of them, are vessels for the glory of House Lannister, no more. Tywin is so incapable of understanding the twins have wills of their own that he would not believe their terrible, incestuous secret when he heard it from Cersei's own mouth.
If Tywin at least prizes his two eldest children, he has only scorn for his youngest, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage). Tyrion had the misfortune of being born a dwarf while his mother Joanna passed in childbirth. His...

The Story: After causing a deadly accident while driving drunk, a family man (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is sent to a maximum security penitentiary. There, he’s recruited by the Aryan Brotherhood, and coerced into acts of violence that threaten to erase any trace of the man he once was.
The Players: Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Omari Hardwick, Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, Emory Cohen & Jeffrey Donovan. Written and directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The History: Shot Caller was released with very little fanfare last summer. Fantasy TV shows can change quickly, and when big plot twists and narrative changes are written into the story, they have a major impact. The magic systems and rules of the realities that these fantastical worlds exist in allow the writers and creators to experiment with story and character dynamics, leading to episodes that change everything for the series. These episodes typically incorporate a tone shift and switch the show's focus to a new set of character dynamics. Altering a series so drastically can either save and prolong its run or be the beginning of the end for the show.
The fantasy TV shows that deserved more seasons rarely get the chance to reinvent themselves and adapt to significant change. However, a long-running series must quickly adjust when actors decide to leave the show or a detailed story arc has reached its end. While it can be daunting to take...

When the dust finally settles on the fantasy phenomenon known as "Game of Thrones" and fans are able to look back without being clouded by emotion (along the lines of what's been happening recently with the 20th anniversary of "Lost" and its ongoing reappraisal), time may prove to be quite kind to the groundbreaking HBO series -- controversies and all. Some of those controversies have become an inextricable part of how we discuss and analyze the epic undertaking, like its iffy approach to depictions of sexual violence or the various ways the adaptation strayed from author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Others fall into a different and more nuanced category entirely, one that's worth dissecting even all these years later. In that light, a particularly odd scene from over a decade ago might be worth a second look.

Martin lives in New Mexico full time, and to be fair to the author, that's a really long trek to make just for a short appearance. There's also the...

It's not, according to Flynn himself. During a 2019 appearance at Con of Thrones in Nashville, Flynn addressed the rumors and said that, contrary to what he'd heard, the two were on fine terms.
