It is a truth universally acknowledged that every good network drama must kill off at least one fan-favorite character in an extremely bleak, cry-until-you're-dehydrated way at least once every few seasons. When it comes to "Chicago Fire," one of the biggest major character deaths came in the very first moments of season 8, which claimed the life of Brian "Otis" Zvonecek.
Judging by the heaps of online comments memorializing Otis like he's a real person, the character who was with Truck 81 since the show's pilot is perhaps the most beloved "Chicago Fire" character ever. The child of Russian immigrants was funny and sometimes underestimated, and he worked his way up to a much-coveted engineer position over time. He also had deep ties to plenty of other key characters, so when the powers that be decided "Chicago Fire" needed to up the ante with real, deadly stakes, Otis ended up biting the dust.

One Chicago has had a difficult couple of years. The franchise has had to contend with numerous cast exits, the writers and actors strike, and the pandemic. Seasons have been shortened, delayed and tweaked as a result. But all the franchise's ducks have been lined up in 2025.
A crossover event is happening once again. It's a huge deal, and one the fans have been wanting for quite some time. It can be easy to forget, however, amidst all the smaller crossovers and cameos, just how long it's been since the last proper crossover event.

Be they a comic book antihero, supernatural vigilante, troubled teen, or male ingenue in a daytime soap, nobody plays these characters quite like actor Jensen Ackles. The television star has enjoyed a career at the forefront of some of the most popular genre projects in TV history, thanks in large part to his hard-earned professional relationships with The CW and producer Eric Kripke.
Following 15 seasons of the fantasy adventure series "Supernatural" and a lauded season-long arc on the Amazon Prime Video comic book romp "The Boys," Ackles is on the precipice of yet another exciting chapter in his career. Before the upcoming releases of the fifth and final season of "The Boys," its highly-anticipated spin-off series, or the Derek Haas crime drama "Countdown," we're taking a look back at his most memorable films and television shows thus far -- ranking them by quality, impact on Ackles' career, and overall showcasing of his talent.

Jensen Ackles brought his typical masculine charisma to the popular TV series Tracker, and it looks like his upcoming show is the perfect follow-up to his portrayal of Russell Shaw. In Tracker, he plays the formerly estranged brother of series lead Colter Shaw (played by Justin Hartley). Russell Shaw has popped up in a few Tracker episodes, assisting Colter with the tracking down of criminals while also revealing aspects of their family's troubled past.
This character resonated deeply with audiences, thanks to the fervent fanbase Ackles has built up from his time on Supernatural, and now The Boys. Audiences are certainly debating a potential Tracker spinoff following Russell and his interesting life, but the Tracker showrunners have confirmed no spinoff is in the plans as of now. However, Ackles' lead role in Amazon Prime's upcoming show Countdown seems like it might be the perfect spiritual spinoff to his role in Tracker.

NBC has announced that a three-part “One Chicago” crossover event will air on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 from 8-11 p.m. Et/Pt. This represents the first crossover since 2019.
Shifting the traditional show order, Chicago Fire will kick things off at 8 p.m., followed by Chicago Med at 9 p.m. and concluding with Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. All three series are produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

There’s a new drama coming to streaming soon, from two people who know how to make successful television: Derek Haas, of the One Chicago franchise, created the series that was developed for Supernatural and The Boys‘ Jensen Ackles. Countdown was ordered to series in June by Prime Video. “I am thrilled to be working again with Jen Salke and Vernon Sanders and all the excellent people they’ve assembled at Prime Video,” said Haas at the time. “I love making shows that keep you on the edge of your seat with nonstop action, drama, surprises, and suspense, and I can’t wait to work with Jensen and for everyone to see Countdown.” Added Ackles, “I had an incredible experience working with the Prime Video team on The Boys and am delighted to be able to continue that relationship on Countdown. One prominent One Chicago cast member has addressed the possibility of returning to play a dead character once more. The franchise is an interconnected universe of NBC shows following various public services in The Windy City, all of which were either created, co-created, or executive produced by Dick Wolf, who is also behind the Law & Order franchise. The universe kicked off with Chicago Fire, which premiered in 2012 and is now in the middle of airing season 13. Various spinoffs were later introduced as backdoor pilots in other shows within the universe.
In addition to Chicago Fire, the roster of One Chicago shows now includes Chicago P.D., which launched in 2014 and is currently airing season 12. It was followed to the small screen by 2015's Chicago Med, which is currently airing season 10. The only show in the franchise that is not still on the air is Chicago Justice, which premiered in 2017 and only ran for one season.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains mild spoilers from Chicago Fire season 13, episode 7, "Untouchable."
Even though Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann has been a main character in Chicago Fire since the beginning, he has been mysteriously missing in season 13 for two consecutive episodes now, making viewers concerned about his whereabouts. The NBC procedural drama TV series, created by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, never explained Herrmann's absence. The network also never announced David Eigenberg's exit, even if it was temporary. Instead, NBC has left the audience to wonder what happened to the Chicago Fire season 13 character (and when or if he is coming back).
The fall finale of Chicago Fire season 13, "Quicksand," airs on Wednesday, November 20, at 9 pm Et on NBC. It's unclear when the series will return in 2025, but season 13 is expected to have 22 episodes total.

It might be tempting to encapsulate David Cronenberg's oeuvre in various shades of body horror (we recently ranked his version of "The Fly" as the best body horror movie ever), but the director also has a serious knack for crafting dark, violent stories that pack a punch. The Viggo Mortensen-led "Eastern Promises" and " A History of Violence" are key examples here, and the mainstream success of these films helped set up the perfect circumstances for Cronenberg to direct a tense espionage thriller based on a bestselling trilogy of novels. After MGM and Relativity Media acquired the rights to Robert Ludlum's "The Matarese Circle" in 2008, Cronenberg was set to direct an adaptation with two mega-popular A-listers attached to play the leads: Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise. The line-up felt too good to be true even when the film was scheduled to be released in 2013, but the project unfortunately...

Quick Links FBI: International Season 5 - Further News & Info
The third show in the CBS FBI franchise, FBI: International, returned for its fourth season in late 2024, but will the series score a season 5 renewal? Created by TV maven Dick Wolf and Derek Haas, International takes the procedural overseas and follows the FBI's elite "Fly Team" headquartered in Budapest as they neutralize threats to the U.S. abroad. The show represents a major shift for the popular franchise, and moves the exciting action to brand-new shores which opens the door for unique storytelling opportunities. Regardless of the cases, International still invests time in its roster of characters as well.
Like all of Dick Wolf's TV shows, the FBI franchise seemingly sprung up overnight, and what started as a single series has blossomed into a trilogy. FBI: International is the third and most recent spinoff, though it is quickly approaching a half-decade on the air already.

Viewers were forced to say goodbye to many characters in Chicago Fire season 12, including Chief Wallace Boden, who Eamonn Walker has played since season 1. The NBC procedural drama, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, has been a success for the network since its premiere in October 2012. It revolves around the personal and work lives of the firefighters and paramedics of Firehouse 51, including Boden. Over the course of its 13-season run, Chicago Fire has lost many actors who portrayed some of the show's most beloved characters, and after season 12, Walker was added to that list.
From Lauren German as Leslie Shay in season 3 to Yuri Sardarov as Brian "Otis" Zvonecek in season 8, numerous Chicago Fire actors have exited their roles, whether their character died, moved out of Chicago, or a different factor that resulted in them leaving Firehouse 51. Throughout Chicago Fire's 13 seasons, the cast has changed numerous times, with many characters coming to and leaving Firehouse 51, but some have stuck out from the rest. The NBC procedural drama TV series, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, follows the lives of the first responders (including firefighters and paramedics) at Firehouse 51 in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago Fire launched a franchise with the One Chicago universe's TV shows Chicago Pd, Chicago Med, and Chicago Justice and the original series' intriguing and complex characters are partly responsible for its (and the franchise's) success.

Thirty-three seasons and 662 episodes of the One Chicago shows Chicago Fire, Chicago Pd, and Chicago Med have aired since Chicago Fire premiered in 2012, and through it all, we have had to reluctantly say goodbye to many beloved characters. None of the three series' casts look the same as they did in their respective first seasons, which is a sad but understandable truth. Most actors only stick with a show for so long before wanting to explore other opportunities. Consequently, some characters have died, while others have simply moved out of Chicago to excuse actors' absences in the One Chicago universe.

Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington were once tapped to play leads in a spy thriller that saw David Cronenberg at the helm. The project never took off as the production house MGM ran into financial issues. This was during the 2008-09 period when Cruise badly wanted to make a comeback. Washington was riding on the success of playing a crime lord in American Gangster, while Cronenberg had A History of Violence and Eastern Promises to his name.

Back in 2007, Christian Bale had only one "Batman" movie on his resumé, and Russell Crowe hadn't yet tortured audiences with his vocal performance in the film version of Les Misérables. They also appeared in a Western movie together, and years after its release, people are going wild for the movie on Netflix.
"3:10 to Yuma" — which was written by Halsted Welles, Michael Brandt, and Derek Haas and helmed by future "Logan" director James Mangold — tells the story of a rancher who's down on his luck and ends up taking a risky assignment to bring down a famous outlaw, with Bale as rancher Dan Evans and Crowe as outlaw Ben Wade. The film, which is both an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's short story and a remake of a 1957 take on the story, boasts a pretty stacked cast and includes Logan Lerman, Ben Foster, Gretchen Mol, Alan Tudyk, and even the late legend Peter Fonda.

Severide's obsession with Ofi might put a strain on his marriage with Stella in Chicago Fire season 13. Severide's passion for arson investigation will continue to be one of his main priorities in season 13. The possibility of Severide leaving Firehouse 51 for Ofi might lead to the demise of his relationship with Stella.
Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd's marriage has been on the edge of breaking for a couple of seasons now, but Chicago Fire season 13 might just be when it finally crumbles to pieces. The NBC procedural drama TV series, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, has featured many relationships over the course of its soon-to-be 13 seasons and over 250 episodes. Due to cast changes, a 2024 One Chicago crossover is necessary. Each One Chicago show has had significant cast exits in previous seasons. There has been a lack of crossovers due to safety concerns regarding Covid-19.
The One Chicago universe used to thrive on crossovers, benefiting from being on the same network, filming in the same city, and releasing episodes on the same day, but it has been a while since NBC has produced a crossover, and that must change. Dermot Mulroney joins the "Chicago Fire" season 13 cast as Chief Pascal, who has a different leadership style than Boden. Pascal previously worked as a fire chief in Miami, bringing experience and a potentially contrasting approach to Firehouse 51. Firehouse 51 may struggle to adapt to Pascal's cheerful leadership style, causing tension among the firefighters accustomed to Boden's serious demeanor.
Wallace Boden is no longer the chief of Firehouse 51 in Chicago Fire, and while his replacement is exciting on the surface, the new character might stir up some trouble in the series. The NBC procedural drama TV show, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, introduced Eamonn Walker's Chief Boden during the pilot episode in October 2012, and the actor has been a series regular and significant figure in the One Chicago universe ever since. However, Walker's Boden left Chicago Fire ahead of season 13, leaving his chief spot vacant and needing a replacement.

Jensen Ackles is dominating Prime Video with upcoming shows as Soldier Boy in The Boys season 5 and Vought Rising prequel. Ackles' absence in The Boys season 4 sets up his return in season 5 and a promising stand-alone series, Countdown. Ackles' network TV success in shows like Supernatural paved the way for his streaming dominance with Amazon Prime Video.
Considering his long line of upcoming TV shows, Jensen Ackles is starting to become the king of Prime Video, and I am not complaining because nearly everything he stars in is worth watching. Although Jensen Ackles has been active as an actor since 1996, he did not taste mainstream success until he starred as one of the two leads of the WB series Supernatural. In recent years, he has garnered more recognition for voicing and also playing superhero characters on the small screen, with his most prominent role in Prime Video's The Boys.

Fire Country is a trending action drama on Netflix, offering a different firefighting experience than Chicago Fire. The series follows inmates fighting wildfires in Northern California, providing a gripping, immersive storyline. Executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Fire Country delivers thrilling action scenes while fans await Chicago Fire season 13.
Netflix has the perfect trending action drama for those waiting for Chicago Fire season 13. Derek Haas and Michael Brandt created the Chicago Fire series, focusing on the fictional stories of the firefighters and paramedics at Chicago's Firehouse 51. The series has spawned several spinoffs comprising the larger One Chicago shared universe. The One Chicago shows are just part of the composition of the many Dick Wolf franchises, which dominate television with the One Chicago and Law & Order franchises on NBC and the FBI universe on CBS.

Chicago Justice was an epic fail it was canceled after one season due to low ratings and lack of sustainability. Chicago Med's quality has declined as original cast members exit, affecting the engaging storylines and character development. Chicago Pd and Chicago Fire are the two best One Chicago shows.
One of the most popular and longest-running franchises on network TV is One Chicago on NBC, which started when Derek Haas and Michael Brandt created Chicago Fire and released it in the fall of 2012, and was consecutively followed by three spinoffs Chicago Pd, Chicago Med, and Chicago Justice. Every show in the One Chicago shared universe has had varying degrees of success. Some TV series have performed better than others, while one in particular was an epic fail many would rather forget about. Nevertheless, NBC's procedural franchise has prevailed over the years, resulting in major milestones and impressive accomplishments.

While initially disheartened by Chief Boden's sudden exit from Chicago Fire, the TV show's replacement for Eamonn Walker's character has lightened my spirits, making me much more excited about season 13. The NBC procedural drama series, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, debuted in 2012 and was an immediate victory for the network. Prime Video is beefing up the cast for its crime drama Countdown.
Violett Beane, Uli Latukefu and Elliot Knight have joined the series, which comes from creator Derek Haas (Chicago Fire, FBI: International). They join a cast that also includes Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho and Eric Dane.
Ordered to series in June, Countdown centers on LAPD officer Mark Meachum (Ackles), who — after a broad-daylight murder — is brought into a secret task force with agents from a host of law enforcement agencies. A more sinister plot then comes into focus as the task force must put aside competing agendas to save an entire city.
Beane (Death and Other Details, God Friended Me) will play Evan Shepherd, a tech-savvy recent graduate of the FBI Academy who’s eager to learn how to operate inside the task force. Latukefu (Young Rock, MaXXXine) will play Lucas Finau, a veteran of the LAPD’s Gangs and Narcotics division.

Jensen Ackles' return to Tracker season 2 is confirmed, bringing relief and excitement to fans of the show. Ackles' portrayal of Russell Shaw in season 1 garnered a positive reception, making his return crucial to season 2. Russell Shaw's influence on Colter's investigations in season 2 is expected, adding depth to the character dynamics.
A new Tracker update regarding Jensen Ackles' status on the show makes me so relieved about its future. The series premiered after the Super Bowl in early 2024 and found immediate success. After just four episodes, Tracker was renewed for a second season. Tracker season 2 is now on the horizon, with CBS officially confirming that the show will return on October 27, 2024. Jensen Ackles' new role in Countdown may prevent his return to Tracker season 2, potentially thwarting a promising ensemble dynamic. The establishment of a potential team with Reenie, Colter, and Russell in Tracker season 2 is now in jeopardy due to Ackles' new commitment. The possibility of a love triangle involving Reenie and the Shaw brothers in Tracker season 2 may have been overshadowed by Ackles' conflicting schedule.
I hope Jensen Ackles' new role doesn't thwart this promising ensemble for Tracker season 2. The Supernatural star portrayed the elder brother of Colter Shaw, the series protagonist and a self-proclaimed "rewardist," in Tracker season 1. After being mentioned throughout the season in connection to the death of their father, I was thrilled when Ackles finally made his Tracker debut in episode 12. Tracker had big moments in the first season that introduced two characters who seemed like they would be big parts of Season 2. These two characters were Colter Shaw’s (Justin Hartley) brother and sister. Jensen Ackles played Russell Shaw, and Melissa Roxburgh played Dory.
However, both Ackles and Rosburgh have signed on to star in new shows, which suggests they might not be able to return to their Tracker roles. Here is what Hartley said fans can expect from these characters in the second season.
Will Colter Shaw’s Brother & Sister Be Back In Tracker Season 2?
Tracker is about Colter Shaw, a man who is a “tracker” and hires himself out to people who need to find someone who has disappeared. However, while the first season had several stand-alone adventures for Colter, his childhood and history played out throughout the season.

Spoiler Alert: The following article contains spoilers from the Season 9 finale of “Chicago Med.”
Dominic Rains is leaving the cast of “Chicago Med.”
Rains has starred in the NBC medical drama since Season 5, when he began playing Crockett Marcel, a skilled doctor from New Orleans who leads the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center’s 2.0 surgical suite.
Though Rains is confirmed to have exited as a series regular, it is not yet known if he will reprise the role in a guest capacity.
The news comes after the Season 9 finale aired on May 22 and hinted at a goodbye for Crockett, who loses a young patient named Colin after making the decision not to operate on him, leading Colin’s father to commit suicide. Hospital head Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) encourages him to take time away from work to process. He later confesses to nurse Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) that he lost his own daughter to leukemia.

Exclusive: Eric Dane (Euphoria) has been tapped to star opposite Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho in Countdown, Prime Video’s thriller drama series from One Chicago veteran Derek Haas.
His casting shouldn’t be alarming news for Euphoria fans. According to sources, there have been some promising signs as work on Season 3 scripts continues with creator Sam Levinson. Amid a production delay, HBO in March allowed the cast to take other acting jobs.
Should the network proceed with a third season — which I hear is still targeting a start of production later this year for a 2025 debut — filming will have to be done around the schedule of cast members like Dane who have booked new gigs. That is considered challenging but doable. Since March, Dane also signed up for pan-European miniseries Kabul, which is currently in production.

Amazon MGM Studios is doubling down on its working relationship with Jensen Ackles after bringing the Supernatural alum aboard the hit television series The Boys for a new episodic drama, Countdown. The project hails from Chicago’s own Derek Haas, the writer and producer of shows like Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and more. Haas inked an exclusive deal with Prime Video after exiting Wolf Entertainment. Countdown is the first project to come from the pact.
Haas designed Countdown for Jensen Ackles after the Batman voice actor entered a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios for his production company Chaos Machine Productions. Ackles established the banner with his wife, Danneel Ackles, after his show-stopping role as Soldier Boy on The Boys.

Amazon is combining a popular actor, a popular genre, and an executive producer from a hit franchise—how can we not be excited? Prime Video has ordered the thriller drama Countdown to series, and notably, it will consist of 13 episodes (more than the usual 10 for a streaming show). It will star Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles—he’s under a first-look television deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and this show was developed for him—and comes from One Chicago‘s Derek Haas (who now has a deal with Amazon MGM Studios). Ackles stars as LAPD officer Mark Meachum. A suspicious murder in broad daylight leads him to be recruited to join a secret task force of undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement to investigate. The truth of a more sinister plot comes into focus, and the team must overcome their conflicting personal agendas to unite and save the city.
