Saturday Night Live took aim at MSNBC this weekend in a skit that satirized the network’s coverage of President-elect Donald Trump and the personalities of its anchors.
The sketch featured Sarah Sherman as Rachel Maddow, who introduced herself by warning viewers, “Dads better hide their older, bookish-looking lesbian daughters.”
The segment parodied MSNBC’s panel discussions, describing the featured analysts as “basically like The Avengers for your aunt.” Cast members portrayed network regulars, including Ari Melber, Joy Reid, Stephanie Ruhle and Chris Hayes, skewering their on-air quirks.
Ego Nwodim, playing Reid, asserted that the network would focus on Trump’s actions rather than his words, saying, “This time around, we’re not gonna get sucked in by every new shiny, crazy statement from Trump.” Moments later, Sherman’s Maddow interrupted with breaking news that Trump allegedly wants to “trade Connecticut for Italy.”

Donald Trump is returning to the White House, so you know what that means: Dave Chappelle is hosting Saturday Night Live. Chappelle famously made his SNL debut on the 42nd season episode which aired on Nov. 12, 2016, four days after Trump won the presidency for the first time. While that appearance, which won Chappelle the first of five Emmy awards (he also won for hosting the series in 2021) took place immediately after the election, this one aired right before the inauguration, making this a once-in-every-four-year tradition. Here are the best moments from Chappelle’s third hosting gig, from his opening monologue to the funniest sketches.

Tucker Carlson made a primetime return to Fox News tonight with his speech at the Republican National Convention, but the ex-host was nowhere to be seen on his old homes of CNN and MSNBC.
Taking the stage at the GOP shindig to the introduction of “Journalist, author and American citizen,” Carlson opened his remarks sounding very unlike a former bow tie-wearing conservative. “I’ve been to many conventions,” he told the delegates in Milwaukee after spending the past three days palling around with the Trumps and sitting in their VIP box. I’ve never been to a more fun convention. I’ve never been to a convention with better vibes.”
Venturing into the occasional aside and with no teleprompter, Carlson then delivered a full-throated seal of approval to Donald Trump and VP nominee J.D. Vance to the enthusiastic and one-time “Mass Deportations Now” sign-holding crowd. On the last night of...

Can Mondays do for the TV business what Thursdays and Sundays once did? Some of the medium’s best-known personalities are trying to figure this question out.
When Jon Stewart re-emerges Monday night as a one-night-a-week host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” he will join MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Jen Psaki in making bespoke Monday appearances for their network, part of what has become a low-key scheduling experiment that actually has high stakes: In a medium best known for offering viewers the same hosts in the same time slots five nights a week, can TV networks that thrive on news-and-talk programs generate new attention and advertising dollars by doling them out less frequently ?
“Monday is really appealing,” says Stephanie Morales, vice president of media intelligence at Magna, the Interpublic Group media-research firm. It tends to be the second-most-watched day of the week on linear TV, behind Sundays,...

Mehdi Hasan said that he is leaving MSNBC after the network canceled his weekend show.
“I’ve decided that it’s time for me to look for a new challenge,” he said at the end of his program on Sunday.
The network shuffled its weekend lineup last year, dropping his weekend show while saying that he would remain as a commentator and fill-in anchor. With his hard hitting interview, he had been considered a rising star. But his commentary, particularly about Israel, has sparked controversy. That included a contentious interview earlier this month with Mark Regev, an adviser to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Sunday’s episode was his final show, and he told viewers, “As we begin 2024, with an election coming, a war still ongoing, and too many Trump trials honestly to even keep track of, and with this show going away, I’ve decided it’s time for...

On Monday night’s “All-In,” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes took some time to “honor those fellow members of our profession who paid the ultimate price of bearing witness for all of us” in the war between Israel and Hamas.
Hayes was inspired by the shocking number of journalists who’ve been killed in Gaza during the conflict, which has been raging since the devastating Hamas attacks on Israel Oct. 7. Hayes called Gaza “the most dangerous place in the world for journalists right now, and it’s not even close.”
You can watch the clip at the bottom of the page.
Hayes noted that foreign journalists are only allowed into Gaza if they’re embedded with Israeli military forces, which means the work of Palestinian journalists in many ways makes them “the eyes and ears of the world.” Which brought him to the disturbing story from last week, in which a...

Updated, 5:08 Am Pt, Wednesday: Democrats won significant victories in off-year elections on Tuesday, with Andy Beshear reelected governor of Kentucky, an abortion rights ballot measure easily approved in Ohio and the party taking full control of Virginia’s General Assembly.
As cable news networks deployed graphics and teams of pundits to offer their takes, there was a bit of vexation when it comes to making sense of it all when it comes to 2024.
Earlier in the evening, CNN released the results of a poll showing President Joe Biden trailing former President Donald Trump in a rematch, giving fuel to the storyline that Democrats are facing a five-alarm fire when it comes to their prospects next year.
On MSNBC, as it was clear that Beshear was on his way to winning reelection over Republican Daniel Cameron in the deep-red state, Chris Hayes said, “If everything was going as poorly as people say things are going,...

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

You might call it CNN Headline News — for the streaming era.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to unveil a 24/7 live-streamed news service called “CNN Max” on September 27, and indicated the outlet would focus initially on breaking news. Anchors including Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker, Fredricka Whitfield and Jim Sciutto have been given assignments, with Sciutto set to lead breaking news in the afternoons. Bianna Golodryga and Christiane Amanpour could also have roles, according to a person familiar with the situation.
CNN has fallen far behind its rivals when it comes to streaming, with Warner scuttling a nascent subscription-based streaming outlet, CNN+, last year. As the company recalibrated CNN’s strategy, however, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, ABC News and CBS News have all had opportunities to establish new programming for the broadband set, and to experiment while refining their brands in the space. CNN+ may not have worked, but perhaps CNN on Max will.
Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to launch new original programs from CNN that will stream on its Max streaming service, according to three people familiar with the matter. Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.
CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.

As the June 1 deadline to raise the debt ceiling approaches, NBC News’ Chuck Todd blasted Republican Congressman Byron Donalds for defending Donald Trump’s flip-flopping on whether debt negotiations should be used as a way to push partisan agendas.
During Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Todd asked Donalds to respond to a clip of the former president saying in 2019 that he “can’t imagine anybody ever even thinking of using the debt ceiling as a negotiating wedge,” specifically prompting the Florida representative to explain why he disagrees with Trump in this case.
Before getting down to business on the issue, Donalds noted that despite Trump’s comments from several years ago, the former president also recently mentioned when asked why he was contradicting now what he said then, explained his pivot was “because he’s not president,” referring to last week’s CNN town hall moderated by Kaitlan Collins.

During a CNN investigative report into Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group known for attending school board meetings to opposed supposed LGBTQ+ “indoctrination” by teachers, the news network’s crew was passed a note from a mother at one of the group’s meetings in Colorado Springs that read, “We have the other side of this story. This is a hate group.”
The woman who wrote the note was a member of Neighbors for Education, a group created in 2021 to counter Moms for Liberty after it was successful in electing school board members that supported its views. According to “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski, Ron DeSantis’ continuing fight with Disney isn’t simply a political misstep. It’s a rookie move.
“Joe was right,” Brzezinski said Friday during Friday morning’s broadcast, backing previous statements made by her co-host Scarborough saying, “Mickey Mouse has brass knuckles because he’s taking on Bob Iger… You don’t do that.”
“This is politically such a rookie move to do these gesture politics, to try and own the libs and maybe get in a small subset of the Tampa area,” Brzezinski said Friday. “In the end, you end up costing Florida jobs.”
The MSNBC host added that the Florida governor “can’t see one foot in front of his face.” “I don’t know how that plays on the big stage, and I think it gives Trump a lot of material.”

Update: Fox News issued another statement to address potential changes to its primetime schedule, this time on the status of Laura Ingraham.
A network spokesperson said, “Reports based on various tweets by left wing activists are wildly inaccurate — Laura Ingraham, the top-rated woman in cable news, is now and will continue to be a prominent host and integral part of the Fox News lineup.”
The latest Fox News statement does not address whether she will remain in her 10 p.m. Et time period, but the network statement is a pushback on social media rumors that she is exiting.
The speculation about Ingraham started after the Drudge Report, in its main headline, reported that Fox News was about to overhaul its primetime line up, with Hannity leading the 8 p.m. hour and shows hosted by Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld taking the later slots. That left the question of what would happen to Ingraham.

According to final Nielsen numbers, Fox News delivered 1.45 million viewers, and MSNBC posted 1.4 million.
Among adults 25-54, CNN averaged 781,000, compared to 160,000 for MSNBC and 140,000 for Fox News.

Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney is going after Donald Trump in a new ad, which is scheduled to air in New Hampshire ahead of CNN’s town hall with Trump on Wednesday. The pointed minute-long commercial calls out Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and claims that “there has never been a greater dereliction of duty by any president.”
“Donald Trump has proven he is unfit for office. Donald Trump is a risk America can never take again,” Cheney says in the final seconds of the commercial.
The ad switches between clips of Trump and the Jan. 6 riots as Cheney provides a voiceover. “Donald Trump is the only president in American history who has refused to guarantee the peaceful transfer of power. He betrayed millions of Americans by telling them the election was stolen. He ignored the rulings of dozens of courts,” Cheney says.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes spent most of Friday’s episode of his show talking about the latest damning development in the continuing scandal involving Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
And the “All In” host had one big question looming over the whole discussion: “Just how much money has secretly flowed from right-wing donors and interests into the household of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas?”
For the last several weeks, Thomas has been beset by a steadily growing number of allegations of corruption. It started with the revelation that he has received lavishly expensive gifts from right wing billionaire Harlan Crow and only grew from there. The latest developments though are particularly serious.
The Washington Post reported on Thursday that right wing judicial activist Leonard Leo, former vice president of the conservative Federalist Society, had paid Ginni Thomas, Clarence Thomas’ wife, tens of thousands of dollars for unspecified consulting back in 2012. What’s worse,...

Alex Wagner was visibly angered Wednesday night while responding to the New York Times report that unveiled texts from former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that many are deeming racist: “It shouldn’t be shocking, but it remains shocking to me,” she said.
The Times report published Wednesday brought to light previously redacted texts from Carlson responding on Jan. 7, 2021 to a video of a group of white men attacking what he called “an Antifa kid,” saying, “It’s not how white men fight.” Speaking with “Alex Wagner Tonight” guests Eddie Glaude Jr., chair of Princeton’s African American studies department, and Jamelle Bouie, co-host of the podcast “Unclear and Present Danger,” later that evening, Wagner denounced the text not just for its content, but for its timing.

MSNBC’s All In With Chris Hayes topped the 8 p.m. Et time slot on Wednesday night, a ratings win for a Fox News rival following the departure of Tucker Carlson.
Hayes’ show drew 1.38 million viewers, edging out Fox News Tonight with 1.33 million and CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 with 643,000. In the 25-54 demo, All In had 167,000, compared to 139,000 for AC360 and 124,000 for Fox News Tonight.
Tucker Carlson Tonight had consistently dominated the time period and was the most viewed show in cable news last month. It averaged 3.25 million viewers in March.
After his exit on Monday, Fox News launched Fox News Tonight, designed to feature a rotating series of hosts until a permanent successor is named. Brian Kilmeade has been hosting this week. The audience has fallen off from the start of the week.
The top ratings for Hayes’ show may be due to audiences on the right going elsewhere.

Unsurprisingly, Fox News ratings suffered Monday night without the channel’s most watched host.
After the surprise of Fox News and Tucker Carlson “agree[ing] to part ways” on Monday, the network’s 8 p.m. hour had a significantly smaller audience Monday night. The debut of Fox News Tonight, hosted by Brian Kilmeade (the first in a series of rotating hosts), pulled in just under 2.6 million viewers — about 21 percent below the average for Tucker Carlson Tonight (3.3 million viewers) over the past eight Mondays.
Fox News Tonight also took a hit in the key news demographic of adults 25-54: Its 0.24 rating was 37 percent lower than the 0.38 Carlson averaged over the prior eight Monday shows.
Those figures were still more than enough to lead the 8 p.m. hour on cable news by a sizable margin. A Joe Scarborough Presents special on MSNBC came in at 1.51 million viewers, while Anderson Cooper 360 drew 728,000 people to CNN.

Both the tech and entertainment industries have flocked to specialist banks that understand their particular requirements. So when Silicon Valley Bank (and others) went down, Hollywood naturally shuddered.
The actual damage amounted to a weekend of worry, with regulators stepping in to make sure bills got paid, paychecks issued and cash tapped. But the bank failures set off a swirl of market uncertainty that could pose longer-term challenges for the entertainment industry — including the possibility of a global recession that would test corporate plans built on the premise of a continued bounceback from the pandemic.
From a banker’s perspective, Hollywood and Silicon Valley don’t look that different. There are risky projects that require upfront investment and may not pay off for years. There’s a rotating cast of characters with sporadic income who hop frequently from one venture to the next. And there’s a constant boom-and-bust cycle to the business.

Fox News has named several new executive vice presidents as the network shifts its senior leadership lineup two months after the passing of SVP Alan Komissaroff.
“As we mark nearly two months since senior vice president of News & Politics Alan Komissaroff tragically passed away, we wanted to share news about editorial leadership changes and the components of his position that will be absorbed by his colleagues,” Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott and president Jay Wallace told staffers in a memo Wednesday obtained by TheWrap. “We miss Alan every day and are still heartbroken by his loss.”
Network veteran Tom Lowell has been elevated to senior executive vice president and managing editor for Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, in which he will oversee all editorial departments as he reports to Wallace.

Republican South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham had a lot to say on how the United States, specifically President Joe Biden, should respond after a Russian jet collided with a U.S. drone over the Black Sea.
“We should hold them accountable, and say that if you ever get near another U.S. jet flying in international waters, your airplane will be shot down,” Graham said while visiting Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday. “What would Ronald Reagan do right now? He would start shooting Russian planes down if they were threatening our assets. American foreign policy is in free fall.”

In the days following the failure and government acquisition of the embattled Silicon Valley Bank, it didn’t take long for conservative political pundits to find ways to blame their more liberal counterparts. In this case, the bank – despite being best known for catering to Silicon Valley’s startups and tech bros – is being blamed for its own downfall due to its diversity, equity and inclusion (Dei) initiatives.
Breaking down the right-wing finger-pointing, MSNBC’s “All In” host Chris Hayes slammed the rhetoric as being “comically preposterous” and “offensive.”
“The Trump-aligned Republican Party has to come up with a cover story that papers over this inherent ideological contradiction, and it’s not an easy task,” Hayes said in Tuesday evening’s program. “And I have to, credit where due, tip my hat to them, because they landed on a truly, comically preposterous one: Folks, we’ve got an outbreak of woke banks.

President Joe Biden and comedian Trevor Noah wrapped up their routines at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with appeals for the work of journalists and freedom of the press.
“American democracy is not a reality show,” the president said,
Yet one of the elements that has made the dinner different from a number of other First Amendment events on the D.C. calendar is the dinner’s size and scope, not to mention a kind of surreal nature to the mix of the Council on Foreign Relations and TMZ set. It’s why C-span for years has provided red carpet coverage, even in the years when Biden’s predecessor, the reality show president Donald Trump, has skipped the event.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said Bill O’Reilly “certainly promoted” white nationalism during his 20-year run on Fox News Channel. “He became the spokesman for the right wing and this whole, kind of, going back to the pre-civil rights days,” Sharpton told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on Wednesday night. Fox News cut ties with O’Reilly Wednesday after a New York Times report detailed a series of sexual harassment allegations against the now-former “O’Reilly Factor” host that resulted in dozens of advertisers distancing themselves from the show. Rep. Blake Farenthold likes Donald Trump — likes him so much, in fact, that he might keep on supporting him even if the Gop contender boasted about rape.
