Godzilla premiered in November of 1954, eight months to the day after the United States set off its first hydrogen bomb. Indebted to but distinct from pioneering giant monster movies like 1925’s The Lost World, 1933’s King Kong, and 1953’s The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, the seminal Japanese kaiju film is more than just another special effects-driven creature feature. Godzilla 4K Uhd from Criterion

Godzilla will celebrate its 70th anniversary in style, as The Criterion Collection is bringing Toho’s 1954 Japanese kaiju classic to 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on November 5.

The film has been newly restored in 4K with uncompressed monaural sound. A high-definition restoration of Terry Morse’s 1956 American reworking of the film, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, is also included.

Ishirō Honda directs from a script he co-wrote with Takeo Murata. Eiji Tsuburaya (Ultraman) helmed the special effects. Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata, and Takashi Shimura star with Haruo Nakajima and Katsumi Tezuka as Godzilla.

This third Ishirô Honda / Eiji Tsuburaya outer space action epic is probably the best Toho science fiction feature ever, an Astral Collision tale in which the drama and characters are as compelling as the special effects. Nothing can stop a colossal planetoid heading toward Earth, but science comes to the rescue with the biggest construction job ever undertaken by mankind. The fine screenplay generates thrills, suspense and human warmth. It also takes place in the far, far future: 1980.

Even before I’d seen a single Godzilla movie, I knew Mechagodzilla was my favorite damn thing in the entire franchise. Because really, how could it not be? Directed by Ishirô Honda, Japanese classic Gojira (1954) – or Godzilla – spawned 30-ish sequels, along with innumerable spin-offs and spoofs. You might have heard a tiny bit about one of them this week. Inspired by 1953's The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and the 1952 re-release of King Kong (1939), Gojira started a lengthy stream of Kaiju ("strange creature") films leading right up to Cloverfield (2008). And yet, I wonder how many of Big G's new fans have seen the original B&W version, and whether it can possibly stand up to scrutiny 60 years later? Armed with a free DVD from a newspaper that Loves demonising imaginary monsters, I set about acquainting myself.

The film begins with the mysterious sinking of not one, but two, model boats. This causes great consternation at the Maritime Safety Bureau, where hysterical families await news of their loved ones. Could it be an underwater volcano? Floating mines? "Send more ships!

Forget 1998's ridiculous Roland Emmerich reboot. Forget the Godzooky-marred Hanna Barbera cartoon. Forget even 1968's ultimate creature feature Destroy All Monsters, great though it is. The real yardstick against which Gareth Edwards's forthcoming Godzilla movie should be judged is the 60-year-old original.

Even then, it's worth noting that there are really two incarnations of Ishirō Honda's 1954 film. For years, the better-known version was the Hollywood re-edit, Godzilla, King Of The Monsters! which added new scenes starring Raymond Burr to cater for American audiences. But today the unaltered Japanese version, Gojira, finds greater support.

Whichever version you favour, the star of the show is the oversized lizard unleashed by a nuclear explosion. The monster's native name, Gojira, is a portmanteau of two Japanese words, gorira and kujira which, when combined, mean 'gorilla whale.' So if you've been paying attention to the viral website in promotion of Legendary Pictures' new take on Godzilla, you noticed each image contains letters in the color red. We finally know what it spells, and it should be very familiar to any G-Fan worth his or her salt.

Never mind Rodan, King Ghodiorah, Mecha-Godzilla, Mothra, Destroyah, or even King Kong. Godzilla's most dangerous foe was also the smallest in stature named Daisuke Serizawa-hakase (played in the original Gojira (1954) by famed actor Akihiko Hirata. If you recall, Serizawa created a weapon called "The Oxygen Destroyer," and when Big-g came into contact with it, he was reduced to mere bones. So now that we know the viral images spell out Serizawa, what exactly does that mean, if anything, for Godzilla's appearance at Comic-Con? Stay tuned!

The Godzilla San Diego Comic-Con panel happens on Saturday, July 20th.

The website GodzillaEncounter.com has been updated with new clues that now enable Comic-Con International San Diego badge holders to reserve tickets for an epically-scaled viral encounter. To reserve yours, simply click the image after the break and use the secret code "Serizawa".

The ticketing URL, www.godzillaencounter.ticketleap.com was hidden in today's viral update while the code itself is made up of the red highlighted letters that have appeared in the last few page updates. Serizawa is the last name of scientist Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, played by Akihiko Hirata in Ishirô Honda's 1954 original film.

Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston and Sally Hawkins, Godzilla hits the big screen May 16, 2014.

Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

Toho has kept Godzilla alive through two generations of feature films, many of which were only released in Japan. The last time Godzilla arrived in North America, it was for a 50th Anniversary re-release of the original 1954 film, directed by Ishirō Honda featuring special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya,...

Chicago – In his excellent commentary for “Godzilla, King of the Monsters,” the 1956 reworking of Ishiro Honda’s “Godzilla,” both of which are included in one DVD or Blu-ray set recently released from Criterion, film historian David Kalat claims that these films are looked at skeptically when it comes to critics assessing the art of the form. He’s half right. Any critic worth a damn understands the influence and importance of Honda’s film (and Morse’s reworking of it) but generations of movie goers may consider these movies a joke (in no small part due to the films that would follow, including Roland Emmerich’s awful reboot attempt). This stellar edition, arguably the most interesting release of Criterion’s first quarter of 2012, will hopefully correct that.

There’s also a new DVD box set that made us laugh out loud in its awesomeness: Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years. Yes, that’s real.
