Prior to its release in 1991, there was every reason to believe that Michael Lehmann's heist comedy "Hudson Hawk" would be a hit. It was written by star screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who had already had gigantic success with film like "48 Hrs.," "Commando," "Jumping Jack Flash," and "The Running Man." His biggest smash was "Die Hard" in 1988, and he was tapped to write the sequel two years later. "Hudson Hawk" would re-team de Souza with "Die Hard" star Bruce Willis, and the film would boast performances from Danny Aiello, fresh from "Moonstruck," as well as James Coburn, Richard E. Grant, Sandra Bernhard, and Andie MacDowell. Lehmann, meanwhile, also had a big cult success in 1988 with "Heathers." Dexter: Original Sin seems like it’s off to a killer start.

The series premiere racked up 2.1M global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in the first three days of availability, according to Paramount Global.

The company also says it Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever, although it didn’t specify how much of that audience came from streaming.

Dexter: Original Sin debuted on Friday, December 13 with one episode on Paramount+ before its cable premiere on Sunday evening. Episode rollout will continue that way with two new episodes streaming this Friday. This data encompasses viewership from Friday through Sunday.

Paramount certainly seems happy with this number, which is really all that matters, but it’s difficult to say whether this is an outright win, as the company shares data pretty sparingly.

The crime drama series Dexter originally aired on Showtime for eight seasons, from 2006 to 2013… and even though I had access to Showtime during those years, I completely missed out on it. The show was revived with a season called Dexter: New Blood in 2021, and now a prequel series called Dexter: Original Sin is set to begin airing on the Paramount+ streaming service as of this Friday, December 13th, with the Showtime premiere to follow on December 15th. A movie doesn't have to be successful to be a classic. Take "Heathers" — written by Daniel Waters, directed by Michael Lehmann, starring Winona Ryder.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up, but apparently didn’t. Dexter: Original Sin went into production a few months ago, and now a first look trailer has arrived online, along with a premiere date that’s much sooner than I was expecting. The teaser trailer really sets the vibe for Dexter’s origin story with all the funkiest elements of the 1990s from the music to the fashion, the furniture, and even the glorious mustache Patrick Dempsey is wearing. Gellar humorously reflects, “It’s funny — I think it’s a different ’90s than what I knew because I was like, ‘I don’t remember this hairstyle.’ But I played a teenager in the ’90s, not an adult in a business environment, so maybe that is how people dressed in the ’90s. Maybe that is how they wore their hair.

Although the film catapulted Winona Ryder to cult queen status, not everyone was onboard with her role in 1988’s Heathers.

The Academy Award nominee recalled that her agent begged on bended knee for her not to take the part of Veronica Sawyer in the “very subversive” teen dark comedy from writer Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann.

Recalling the audition process, Ryder said in a video for Harper’s Bazaar, “I wasn’t considered pretty enough, so I went across the street to the Beverly Center, to the Macy’s counter. They had them do a makeover on me. Then I went back and I was like, ‘Please!’

“But my agent at the time literally got down on her knees, she’s like, ‘Please, you’re gonna destroy any chance of a career,'” recounted Ryder.

This cult classic, which has captivated audiences with its sharp satire and dark humour, will be available through Arrow Films, featuring a comprehensive collection of special features and a stunning new restoration.

Heathers has long been celebrated as a quintessential piece of modern American cinema, renowned for its biting critique of 1980s high school culture. Set at Westerburg High School, the film follows the story of Veronica Sawyer, a bright and popular student who reluctantly becomes part of an elite group of girls known as the “Heathers.” Disillusioned by their cruelty, Veronica finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Jd. Their partnership takes a deadly turn when a prank on the clique’s leader, Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), leads to her accidental poisoning, staged as a suicide.

In an era where audiences are peddled an onslaught of remakes, sequels, and requels, few attempts at adapting existing works really manage to stand out. That one of these precious few was immediately trashed by critics who didn’t understand it and mismanaged by a company that was too scared to court controversy, is a shame. That show, though you may not expect it, was none other than Paramount’s own “Heathers”, which aired in 2018.

The series, created by Jason Micallef, had the same basics as Daniel Waters and Michael Lehmann’s film of the same name, fixating on a group of students at Westerberg High School in Sherwood, Ohio, and the deeply messy politics and behavior that comes with that. It retained the main crew of three “mean-girls” Heathers, along with the blasé “good person” Veronica and her faux-tortured murderer love interest Jd.
