Universal Studio Group has greenlit a new live-action horror comedy TV series based on “The Munsters”, titled “1313”, set within the ‘Universal Monsterverse’, from James Wan and Lindsey Anderson Beer:

The original 1960's sitcom depicting the home life of a family of Universal Studio monsters, was created by Allan Burns and Chris Hayward, starring Fred Gwynne as 'Herman Munster' and Yvonne De Carlo as his wife, 'Lily'.

A reboot of “The Munsters” and a series adaptation of the 1976 Universal Pictures comedy “Car Wash” are among the projects Universal Studio Group (Usg) currently has in development, Variety has learned. In addition, Universal International Studios (Uis) and Carnival Films are developing a drama series about a newlywed woman accused of murdering her husband on their honeymoon.

The “Munsters” reboot is currently titled “1313,” a reference to the fictional family of monsters’ address at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. It is not currently set up at any network or streaming service.

The new show is described as a horror series that “lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse,” per the official logline. The project was developed by James Wan, Lindsey Anderson Beer, and Ingrid Bisu. Anderson Beer will serve as showrunner and executive producer via Lab Brew, with Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett executive producing via Atomic Monster. Bisu will be a co-executive producer.

It was also an expensive flop, the kind studios want to forget, not make sequels, or in this case, prequels, to.

Set in 1876, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned is the story of Sheriff Roy Pulsipher, played by Jeff Bridges in the original and Jeffrey Donovan this time around. Here he’s meeting his daughter Charlotte and her fiance Angus at the train station when a robbery occurs and he’s killed in a shootout.

Locked and loaded with a decent screenplay, Michael Winner and Charles Bronson acquit themselves well in this brutal 1974 hit that launched a decade’s worth of nasty vigilante movies. The lynch-mob formula presents crimes so awful that the audience demands violent retribution. The shock is that this incitement to ‘fight back’ is not direct right-wing propaganda — vigilantism is glamorized but not endorsed. A fine supporting cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats and unexpected treats like Olympia Dukakis and Jeff Goldblum. “Fill your hand!”

Albert Brenner, the innovative production designer, art director and five-time Oscar nominee whose work was admired in films from Fail Safe, Bullitt and Point Blank to The Sunshine Boys, The Turning Point and Backdraft, has died. He was 96.

Brenner died Thursday in his sleep at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced.

The Brooklyn native started his career dressing mannequins for window displays and worked on such TV shows as Car 54, Where Are You? before progressing to a much larger canvas — designing the five-acre New York Street backlot for Paramount in Hollywood after the original was destroyed by fire in August 1983.

Across his 50-plus-year career, Brenner collaborated on eight features with director Garry Marshall, seven with Herbert Ross, five with Peter Hyams, three with Sidney Lumet and two with Robert Mulligan. Comedies, sci-fi flicks, Westerns, period pieces — he did them all.

Starting in fall 1964, children across America could watch CBS’ The Munsters but come January 1966, they seemingly all flipped the dial to ABC and Batman. The superhero series’ smash ratings cast a death spell on the humorous take on the classic monsters, with the exaggerated look as perfected by Universal’s horror films of the 1930s. Fred Gwynne was a delight as Herman Munster, paired nicely with Yvonne DeCarlo and Al Lewis. The sitcom transferred traditional family drama tropes to the residents of 1313 Mockingbird Lane and for 70 episodes, it was tremendous fun, revived for wildly successful syndication.

Ever since, there have been revivals in feature films, animated series, and failed attempts at series revivals. Now, here comes director Rob Zombie with his take on the classic characters, largely retaining the look of the original series, but in garish color.

Whether it rises above its abysmal first look, "The Munsters" at least feels born out of sincerity. Director Rob Zombie ("The Devil's Rejects") is quite possibly the biggest "Munsters" fan. Even his song "Dragula" is based on the outlandish family vehicle, so despite the violent idiosyncrasies of his earlier work, Zombie oddly feels like the right person to both pay tribute to the '60s sitcom, while making it feel fresh for another generation.

While the "House of 1000 Corpses" filmmaker is the headliner, "The Munsters" features a pretty awesome cast with Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, Daniel Roebuck, Jorge Garcia, RIchard Brake, and Cassandra Peterson, most of whom are Zombie alumni in some way or another. Of everyone involved, however, Phillips has one of the most difficult shoes to fill.

Daniel Roebuck has come a long way from his days playing a private investigator on "Matlock," where he acted opposite '60s sitcom legend Andy Griffith. In Rob Zombie's "The Munsters," Roebuck has donned vampire makeup to play another character from a '60s sitcom: namely, The Count, also known within the franchise as Count Sam Dracula or just "Grandpa." It's a role Roebuck inherited from Al Lewis and it's one that sees him promoting a movie that was already drawing mixed reviews even before its release, based on the lighting and editing of its trailers.

In a forthcoming interview with /Film's Jeff Ewing, Roebuck reveals that he has been reading the newspaper at the breakfast table like Grandpa, or perhaps just hearing some impertinent online anti-Munsters chatter. Roebuck defends "The Munsters" against the Rob Zombie "haters," saying:

Many gangland parodies fall flat, but not Jonathan Demme’s marvelous combo of high spirits and murder. Butch Patrick, who played the young werewolf Eddie in the original cast of “The Munsters,” will join the feature reboot’s cast as the Tin Can Man, director Rob Zombie announced in an Instagram post Wednesday.

In the original ’60s television series, the Tin Can Man was a robot that Eddie built for a science fair before it was sabotaged, forcing his grandpa (Al Lewis) to fix it.

“Where’s Eddie you ask? Well, I’ll tell you!,” Zombie wrote on Instagram. “My good buddy [Butch Patrick] is now in The Munsters as The Tin Can Man. I am thrilled to have another original Munster in my new film. Get ready for some robot fun!”

Years in the making! The glory of MGM on parade! Enough studio resources to film twenty pictures were expended on this paean to showman Florenz Ziegfeld. It’s really Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s Technicolor valentine to itself, showing off the studio’s enormous stable of musical talent, along with various of its comic performers. Arthur Freed and Louis B. Mayer’s notion of ‘something for everyone’ results in weird stack of grandiose musical numbers and mostly weak comedy. The biggest draw is the incredible color cinematography that peeks through in three or four jaw-droppingly elaborate musical spectacles. The picture is a workout to find the artistic limits of the Technicolor system.

Rob Zombie, the heavy-metal musician turned director, has confirmed that he will write and direct a feature film based on “The Munsters,” the ’60s sitcom about a family of friendly monsters.

“Attention Boils and Ghouls!,” Zombie wrote on Instagram. “The rumors are true! My next film project will be the one I’ve been chasing for 20 years! The Munsters! Stay tuned for exciting details as things progress!”

Zombie is a longtime Munsters fan who named his song “Dragula” after the Munsters’ car and has often spoken of his love for the series.

Zombie’s upcoming project is set up at Universal Studios’ 1440 Entertainment home entertainment division. The 1440 arm makes live-action and animated films and series for worldwide distribution across all non-theatrical platforms, which indicates the movie will likely go directly to streaming.

Rob Zombie, the heavy-metal rocker turned director known for his hard-r-rated horror films like “The Devil’s Rejects” and “House of 1000 Corpses,” has announced that he will next direct a take on “The Munsters,” the genial ’60s sitcom about a family of monsters.

“The Munsters” is set up at Universal’s 1440 Productions, which is a division of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. No release details were immediately available. A rep from Universal’s 1440 Productions did not immediately respond for a request for comment.

Zombie, who is also writing the script for the film, is known for his often bloody and hardcore horror films. But he’s actually a hardcore fan of the series and has been rumored for a film for years. Beverley Owen, an actress best known for her one-season stint as the beautiful non-monster Marilyn on the CBS classic ’60s sitcom The Munsters, died Feb. 21 at her home in Vermont. She was 81.

Her death was confirmed by her former cast mate Butch Patrick, who played little wolfish boy Eddie Munster on the 1964-66 series.

“Beautiful Beverly [sic] Owen has left us,” Patrick posted on Facebook yesterday. “What a sweet soul. I had the biggest crush on her. Rip Bev and thanks for your 13 memorable Marilyn Munster episodes.”

Owen’s daughter Polly Stone told TMZ that her mother died following a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. The former actress had not publicly disclosed her illness, but was surrounded by friends and family at her Vermont home when she passed, according to Stone.

Charlotte Rae, whose role as lovable house mother Mrs. Garrett on The Facts of Life charmed a TV generation, has died. She was 92 and passed Sunday at her Los Angeles home, according to representatives. Rae revealed last year that she had bone and pancreatic cancer, but a cause of death was not immediately revealed.

Before the influential Kolchak: The Night Stalker series aired on ABC in the mid-’70s, Darren McGavin brought the titular investigative reporter to life for the first time in the 1972 TV movie The Night Stalker, which is getting a 4K restoration Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber this October, along with its 1973 sequel, The Night Strangler.

American actor Al Lewis, who played Grandpa in hit 1950s comedy The Munsters, has died. He was 95. Lewis, who had suffered years of failing health, passed away with his wife Karen at his bedside in New York on Friday night. The much-loved actor hosted a weekly program on New York radio station WBAI-FM after a long career in TV and film. He is survived by Karen, three sons and four grandchildren.

Al Lewis, remembered for his wacky and endearing performance as Grandpa Munster on the 1960s sitcom The Munsters, died Friday in New York after several years of failing health. His son Ted said that his father was 82, though he was widely reported to have been 95. With his arched eyebrows, prominent nose and starchy tuxedo, Lewis' role as a recognizable TV icon never was eclipsed by his work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate. He got his start in show business as a teenager, working as a circus roustabout and performing as a clown, unicycle rider and trapeze artist. For the Big Tent, Lewis had created his own medicine show, conjuring up elixir in his bathtub. He played in a couple of 1950s Broadway comedies. Then came live television, and soon Lewis became known to sitcom fans for his wheezy performance as Lt. Leo Schnauzer on Car 54, Where Are You? (1961-63). He appeared in the 1994 movie of the same title.
