Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and The Sea could bring back classic characters like Jo Grant, Vastra, and Martha Jones. The return of Unit could set the stage for a clash with the Sea Devils that doesn't revolve around the Doctor. Villains like Icthar and The Master could also make impactful returns in The War Between The Land and The Sea.
The newly announced Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and The Sea could be the perfect place to bring back some notable classic Doctor Who characters. As explained by Russell T. In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.
As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Doctor Who season 15 comes to Blu-ray, with Horror Of Fang Rock leading the six-story collection. More here.
Never mind the fact that the entirety of Doctor Who – well, save for an episode or two – is available to watch on the BBC’s iPlayer service. There’s also the not-so-small matter of Doctor Who physical media releases, which continue thanks to the genuinely brilliant line of Blu-ray sets.
Next in line? Some Tom Baker magic, thanks to series 15 of Doctor Who becoming the subject of the latest set. This one runs to seven discs, dating all the way back to 1977, and includes the following stories…
Horror Of Fang Rock
The Invisible Enemy
Image Of The Fendahl
The Sun Makers
Underworld
The Invasion Of Time
Tom Baker is accompanied by Louise Jameson’s Leela in these tales, and we also get the introduction of K9 in there too. Plus, of course, Horror...

Bonnie Langford discusses how her character, Mel Bush, has changed since her last appearance on Doctor Who in 1987. Langford hints that Mel has gone through a difficult time, with something dreadful happening to her and her family. However, she still values her time with the Doctor and maintains a strong connection with him. Classic Doctor Who companions have made appearances in the revived era, and Mel's return is eagerly anticipated as viewers wonder how her tech expertise and tragic past will impact her journey in the Tardis.
Doctor Who season 14's returning classic companion actor Bonnie Langford explains how Mel Bush has changed following her departure from the Tardis since her last major appearance in 1987. First introduced during Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor era in "Terror of the Vervoids", computer programmer Melanie Bush traveled alongside Baker's Doctor briefly, but was more prevalent in the earlier seasons of Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy's tenure.

It’s Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary month, which calls for two things: celebration, and admin. Fittingly, here’s an administrative celebration of the BBC show, featuring every season/series that’s aired so far. After a six-tab Excel file and a lot of overthinking, it’s a big ol’ list arranging each of Doctor Who’s individual runs in reverse order of excellence.
(A note on methodology: this list does not include runs of Doctor Who specials or the TV movie, and Christmas specials are included under the entries for their relevant series.)
There’s good stuff everywhere in Doctor Who. Sometimes it can take a bit of digging to find it, but much of the time, you hardly even have to look – it’s just there, posing as the Commissioner from Sirius 4, or asking “Do I have the right?”. What follows is an attempt to arrange each season...

Tales of the Tardis opens up exciting possibilities for future episodes, with various Doctor and companion pairings to explore. Reuniting characters like Jenny and the Tenth Doctor could provide closure and new storylines for Doctor Who fans. Bringing back Martha Jones and the Master would offer more insight into Martha's side of the story from when Harold Saxon took over the world.
Tales of the Tardis opens a whole new universe of Doctor Who, with many tantalizing pairings now possible should future episodes happen. In preparation for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, the BBC has released Tales Of The Tardis. The show follows pairings of classic Doctor Who Doctors and companions, and not only involves the actors reprising their roles, but also combines individual older episodes to create new anthology stories.

If Doctor Who fans ever felt hard done by during any of the show’s previous big anniversaries then the 60th is here to soothe spirits, hand out cherished gifts, and generally make a bloody big hair-ruffling fuss of the lot of us.
First came news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return in three anniversary specials, then came the ‘roughly 8 million episodes of Doctor Who are coming to BBC iPlayer on November 1’ announcement, then they brought back Doctor Who Confidential under a different name, and now…
…three Classic era Doctors are returning alongside eight former Doctor Who Companions (plus The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde Langer) for new series Tales of the Tardis.
New Scenes, Classic Who Cast
Not a behind-the-scenes documentary, and not standalone adventures, the six-part series will pair up the stars of classic Who acting in new scenes together, in character, wrapped around episodes from six existing serials.

Tales of the Tardis is a great way for new viewers to get a taste of Doctor Who's classic era and understand its influence on the series today. The omnibus-inspired format of the series makes it more accessible to modern audiences who may not be used to the serialized format of the classic series. The newly filmed scenes in Tales of the Tardis offer a chance for familiar characters to return and tie up loose ends, while also introducing new viewers to other parts of the Doctor Who universe.

It’s a good time to be a Doctor Who fan. Over 800 episodes of the iconic sci-fi series will soon be available to watch on BBC iPlayer, and they’ll be joined by a brand-new Doctor Who spinoff series which will reunite classic Doctor Who duos, including classic Doctors and their companions.
Tales of the Tardis will span six-episodes, with each featuring a different duo, with brand new scenes woven together with classic episodes to create feature-length omnibus episodes. Doctor Who almost brought back a classic villain in a season 12 episode to face Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor. Doctor Who season 12 saw the Thirteenth Doctor and her group of companions face Judoon, Cybermen, the return of The Master (Sacha Dhawan), and mysteries about the Doctor's ties to Gallifrey's hidden past. McTighe has written a number of stories for Doctor Who, including the Thirteenth Doctor's television adventures "Kerblam!" and "Praxeus" that aired in seasons 11 and 12, respectively.
Ahead of the release of his novelization of "Kerblam!", McTighe opened up to RadioTimes.com about his other contribution to the main television series during Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall's Doctor Who era. The writer revealed that the season 12 story "Praxeus," which saw the Doctor race to fight a virus spread through microplastic pollutants in the environment, was originally considered to see the return of the Autons, a foe who first appeared during the 1970s.

Russell T Davies previously created The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spinoff vehicle for Elisabeth Sladen following her emotional return in Doctor Who season 2, episode 3, "School Reunion". Season 1 companion Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) also led his own spinoff series, Torchwood, and it's expected that Rtd will continue this trend with his new era as showrunner.
Speaking at a BFI event to promote the release of Doctor Who Season 8 on BluRay, Jo Grant actress Katy Manning teased (via Radio Times) that "spinoffs (were) coming" and people were coming back. Former Doctor Who star Katy Manning, who portrayed the character's third companion Jo Grant, teases more returning characters and spin-offs are in the show's future. Manning starred in the British sci-fi series from 1971-73 and served as the companion to Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor. While she left Doctor Who in 1973 to pursue other opportunities, the show has remained close to her heart. She has continued voicing Grant in audio adventures by Big Finish Productions and also appeared in a cameo in the 2022 Doctor Who special, "The Power of the Doctor."

A delightful trailer for the latest Doctor Who box set has brought back classic companion Jo Grant (played by Katy Manning). The world's longest-running science-fiction TV series, Doctor Who is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Most of the focus is understandably on the future - one that involves three specials featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and will then star Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as the Fourteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday. Meanwhile, though, the BBC continue to re-release classic seasons in their Doctor Who: The Collection range, with each accompanied by stunning special features, and a release trailer.
The BBC has confirmed the much-anticipated release of the Doctor Who season 9 collection, starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and Katy Manning as companion Jo Grant.

Warning! Spoilers for The Power of the Doctor!
Another era of Doctor Who has come to an end, with the latest special, "The Power of the Doctor," depicting showrunner Chris Chibnall’s greatest flaw during his time as the steward of the Tardis. While Chibnall’s iteration of Doctor Who has given the show many strong episodes and performances from both the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and her companions, his era has also been polarizing for fans. The strong reactions to the Thirteenth Doctor’s series can be boiled down to the plot structure of Chibnall’s era, which often included a flaw that was on full display in The Power of the Doctor.
None can contest that Chibnall is a long-time Doctor Who fan and that his decisions for the show came from a place of passion and interest, as he once appeared on TV as a representative of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.

The third and final special episode of Doctor Who season 14, "The Power of the Doctor", is made an even better celebration of BBC’s 100th anniversary with one hidden detail. A time (and space) traveling alien from the destroyed planet of Gallifrey, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate into a new physical form when fatally injured. Thus, since the 1960s, various actors of different genders and ethnicities have taken on the role of the Doctor to extend their story on the screen.
"The Power of the Doctor" takes a look back at the show's history through its multiple Doctors and companions, both acknowledging its traditions and signaling a new, upcoming era. Since the series began in 1963, Doctor Who has featured many official renditions of the character of the Doctor, and many more companions as well. Doctor Who fans were gifted with something very special today as the BBC released a new short which acts as an epilogue to beloved spinoff show The Sarah Jane Adventures. The series came to a premature end after five seasons back in 2011, following leading lady Elisabeth Sladen tragically passing away. Nine years later, creator Russell T. Davies has managed to regroup many of the cast – remotely, of course – for a poignant tale that wraps up the Sja team’s adventures.
In doing so, it reveals where Sarah Jane’s young friends Rani Chandra (Anjli Mohindra), Clyde Langer (Daniel Anthony) and her son Luke Smith (Thomas Knight) are now, with them all going on to successful careers. Once an aspiring journalist, we learn Rani is about to publish an expose that will topple the British government. Meanwhile, Clyde – who dreamt of working in comics in the show – is said to be...

It has been nine years since Elisabeth Sladen, known to millions of “Doctor Who” fans as Sarah Jane Smith, passed away. Now, Whovians finally have a chance to say goodbye as former “Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies released a 15-minute audio epilogue for “The Sarah Jane Adventures,” the spinoff series that featured the beloved Tardis companion.
Narrated by Jacob Dudman, who has played the Doctor in several audio dramas, the epilogue reveals that Sarah Jane had died alongside Sladen. All of her friends from Bannerman Road are there at her funeral, including Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, and her adopted son Luke. Her funeral is also attended by two fellow companions of the Doctor, Jo Grant and Ace, played once again by Katy Manning and Sophie Aldred.

To keep Whovians entertained while we’re stuck indoors during this period of quarantine, Doctor Who creatives past and present have been sharing new content online, with many of them featuring the return of fan favorite stars. The best of the lot, though, has to be this new video – released today – which finally wraps up beloved spinoff show The Sarah Jane Adventures in the most emotional, satisfying way.
First of all, in case you aren’t aware, Sja followed classic companion Sarah Jane Smith’s adventures after her life with the Doctor. It had a successful five season run from 2007 to 2011, and was only brought to a premature end when leading lady Elisabeth Sladen passed away. The series never got a proper conclusion, then, but creator Russell T. Davies has now brought together various familiar faces to give it a finale at long last.

Goodbye’s never an easy thing to say.
And unfortunately, in order to preserve the decades-spanning show Doctor Who, fans have had to get used to the sad act. As we’ve all painfully learned, every so often, the Time Lord must undergo an involuntary regeneration (no matter how badly David Tennant doesn’t want to go), and after a spectacular display, we’re introduced to a new-looking version of the character.
Famously, the most recent transformation saw the series introduce its first female Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker. Though audiences have yet to say goodbye to her, there’ve been 12 other Doctors who’ve undergone the change. And that’s all without mentioning the dozens of side characters we’ve had to part ways with since the show’s start over 50 years ago.

If you’re a Doctor Who fan, you probably know of the work of Big Finish Productions, the audio company with the license to create brand new stories starring the ever-changing cast of the TV show. Virtually every living Doctor and a whole host of companions, allies and supporting characters appear in Big Finish’s audio dramas, which will have been going for an impressive 20 years in 2019.
To celebrate this milestone, the company’s releasing its biggest boxset yet. Titled The Legacy of Time, the six-part collection unites at least five Doctors and a galaxy of stars from the show, both contemporary and classic. The cast, which is full of Doctor Who royalty, includes Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Alex Kingston, Sophie Aldred, Katy Manning, Jemma Redgrave and Ingrid Oliver. And there’s still plenty more where that came from.

Over Doctor Who's long history, what prompted the decision to leave for those in the lead role?
All sorts of things have killed off the Doctor. In the last half century, Doctor Who's unique approach to recasting the lead character has seen him fettled by old age, as punishment, by radiation poisoning, falls big and small, dodgy operations and time itself. There are plenty of in-universe reasons for why the Doctor regenerates, and the outgoing Time Lord Peter Capaldi promises that his upcoming demise will be suitably timey-wimey, but what of the behind-the-scenes reasons that the Doctor has to go?

When it comes to Doctor Who, the character often wins over the audiences because they are kind-hearted and in many ways, are the saviour (or Doctor) we need. While a lot of focus does get given to the ‘new’ breed of Doctors, for fans of the old school we are spoilt for choice with who is the best. One that is high on my list has to be Jon Pertwee, which is why The Doctors: The Jon Pertwee Years was such a joy to watch.
A collection of interviews, The Doctors: The Jon Pertwee Years features Jon Pertwee himself, Katy Manning (Jo Grant), Caroline John (Liz Shaw), Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier), Richard Franklin (Captain Yates), and John Levene (Sergeant Benton). Interviewed by the voice of the Daleks, Nicholas Briggs. Each interview with the stars of Doctor Who is around one hour in length, so you can imagine how interesting the Jon Pertwee one is.

Summer officially begins next month, which means geeks across the country will be preparing for the pop culture extravaganza that is 2015's Comic-Con International: San Diego. But San Diego isn’t the only place to find star-studded conventions filled with elaborate costumes, celebrity panels, film screenings, and other fanboy/girl festivities. In fact, Atlanta is home to many such cons, the most notable being the Labor Day weekend spectacle known as Dragon Con. Before we get to that end-of-summer celebration, here’s a look at a few of Atlanta’s cons happening over the next few months. TimeGate ConventionBritish sci-fi favorite “Doctor Who” spans space and time. But its cult following also spans across the pond, celebrated each year with the TimeGate Convention. Taking place May 22 to 24, 2015’s TimeGate Con features an impressive guest lineup of authors, filmmakers, musicians, historians, and Doctor Who personalities such as Katy Manning and Michelle Gomez.

The Doctor needs a travelling companion. When he travels alone, he runs the risk of quickly turning into an out of touch egotist, ready to change history and spout guff like “I’m the Time Lord victorious!” Not only that, but viewers need a companion in the programme as a point of audience identification. It’s hard to feel empathy for a 2,000 year old alien who can feel the ebb and flow of the universe around him.
And almost always, these companions are terrific characters. Stalwart defenders of right and plucky helpers in the Doctor’s endless crusade to defeat evil-doers across the cosmos. But sometimes, just sometimes, they turn out to be less than marvellous additions to the Tardis crew. Not necessarily because they’re bad characters or poorly acted, but because they were designed by the production team to be that way. An incompetent assistant can be...

HBO are currently courting Anna Paquin for Madame X, a miniseries she and her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer are developing through their production company, Casm. Based on Kate Manning’s book My Notorious Life, the show is set in Victorian-era New York City and follows the life of Axie Muldoon, a wealthy New Yorker who helps her husband create a successful midwife business.
Per Deadline, the series purports to be “a love story, a family saga, and the confessions of a charismatic and passionate woman who changed the lives of countless others.” That premise, along with the true story tag, is a compelling prospect for the HBO treatment – especially in light of the superb Olive Kitteridge series.
As it stands, Paquin will star and executive produce alongside Moyer via Casm, with Jack Black producing through his Electric Dynamite banner. Your Sister’s Sister and Laggies helmer Lynn Shelton is...

HBO's favorite vampy fairy may be returning to work on another sexy show, but this time as a mere human. Former True Blood actress Anna Paquin is in talks to play the lead in Madame X, according to The Wrap. The miniseries is adapted from Kate Manning's period novel My Notorious Life, which is based on a true story from the Victorian era. The series follows Axie Muldoon (Paquin), a penniless daughter of immigrants who becomes a successful, yet controversial, midwife and abortionist in New York City. Paquin, 32, and real-life hubby Stephen Moyer, 45, are reportedly working on the project together.

Michael Armstrong, the writer and star of Eskimo Nell, once said, "It's hard to wank and laugh at the same time". In the 1970s filmmakers gave it a very good try however, and the British sex comedy was virtually the only kind of film being funded. The problem is that the majority of them were neither funny or sexy. They were generally grubby and embarrassing for the actors and the audience. One of the pioneers of the British sex film was director and producer Stanley Long, responsible for The Wife Swappers (1969) and Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1975) and many others. An occasional cinematographer on prestigious films like Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965), Long often recognised and nurtured new talent, particularly if he could see a financial reward.
