The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on the trend of exploring an ambitious concept in its movies with the “Multiverse.” It started in some of the original comic stories, but now it’s really been used to capitalize on a bevy of crowd-pleasing moments. Other movies, such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, also use the multiverse to explore the different branches of life created by a single act. Even properties like Mortal Kombat are getting in on the game. While the “parallel universe” plot device has been used in many sci-fi stories in the past, back in 2001, a little action movie attempted to introduce the idea of the “multiverse” to a mainstream movie audience. Today, we take a look at Jet Li’s The One and see how it holds up with its own take on the concept.
Ok, so let me start this off by being real. The One...

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series – and since the release of this one coincides with Christmas, we are, of course, taking a look at a Christmas horror movie! Many genre fans watch the 1974 classic Black Christmas every December, and while the film’s first remake wasn’t very well received when it was first released in 2006, as the years have gone by, it has gained a strong cult following of its own. So with this episode of Real Slashers, we’re digging into Black Christmas 2006. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Glen Morgan, the 2006 version of Black Christmas has the following synopsis: The holiday season turns deadly for a group of sorority sisters who are stranded at their campus house during a snowstorm. These coeds better watch out, for a vicious killer is on the loose,...

There are enough celebrities who are currently vying (if unofficially) for the title of Christmas Queen that Lucy van Pelt has some serious competition. In terms of sheer cultural ubiquitousness, Mariah Carey seems to be the frontrunner on the strength alone of her 1994 multi-Platinum single, "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Hot on her heels are some other pop divas, including Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter, who've all had a holiday hit that has remained popular for years afterward. While that's all happening in the music world, things seem a little more clear-cut in Christmas movie land. Sure, numerous actors have been in huge holiday films that are watched year after year, but it's hard to think of another actor who's been in more Christmas movies then Lacey Chabert.
Chabert may not be the Christmas Queen per se, but she is certainly the queen of Hallmark movies,...

We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, would be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they ended up giving the movie a limited edition release last month. Those 6,666 units sold out so fast, with fans crashing the Synapse Films website along the way, that the company has now wisely decided to put together a standard edition of the Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release as well. Today, they announced that the street date for the standard edition is March 11th.
Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis:...

After a generic DVD run and Blu-rays released outside the U.S. market under the name Ragman, Synapse Films has answered the prayers of many horror-metal fans with the recent 4K release of 1986’s Trick or Treat. Having “No Wimps” and “No False Metal,” this film is considered by many to be the quintessential heavy metal horror flick, partially thanks to a perfectly apropos soundtrack provided by the band Fastway.
After constantly being harassed by the cool kids at his high school, Eddie Weinbauer aka “Ragman” finds solace in listening to the music of his idol Sammi Curr to get through the abuse. Not only is he a famous heavy metal star, but Curr is also an alum at Eddie’s high school where he became an outcast-made-good into metal stardom. And this is why Eddie feels a faux bond and extreme idolization for Curr since he believes they share the same origin story,...

One of the earliest episodes of The X-Files season 1, episode 8, Ice was a sly remake of John Carpenter's sci-fi horror masterpiece The Thing. A lot of The X-Files classic standalone Monster-of-the-Week episodes were influenced by iconic horror films. Season 4, episode 2, Home, is a slasher about a murderous family inspired by The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Season 6, episode 7, Terms of Endearment, subverts the story of Rosemarys Baby with its tale of a demon snatching an unborn child from its mothers womb.
The series premise of two agents working in the FBIs underground supernatural affairs division gave the writers the freedom to explore every horror trope and subgenre under the sun. The X-Files even did an episode parodying Cops with a werewolf on the loose: season 7, episode 12, X-Cops. The X-Files was taking inspiration from horror cinema from the very beginning. Remakes and reboots can be extremely controversial, particularly when theyre adapting a film thats already good in its own right, but theres always space for new takes on classic stories in todays cinematic climate. Some of the most interesting and innovative horror movies in recent memory have been remakes of existing stories, but this doesnt prevent them from still being amazing stories on their own. The best horror remakes are those that change the original in some way, giving them a level of credibility beyond merely retelling the story.
But in addition to these great reboots, there are also several horror remakes that never should have been made, which can give the entire concept a fairly bad reputation. Viewers begin to associate remakes with cheap retellings of already good stories, but thats not the truth in most cases. The majority of remakes exist for a reason, whether thats to introduce...

Trick Or Treat Limited Edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray: "From the early days of DVD, one movie more than any other has been requested by horror fans and metal heads all over: Charles Martin Smith’s heavy metal horror classic Trick Or Treat. A box office disappointment that found a wide following on home video and cable in the 80s and 90s, it’s been curiously out of reach to fans, who would rely on dubious DVDs and imports to get their Halloween heavy horror treat. Now, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films are finally bringing the much-anticipated Trick Or Treat to your door in a definitive Limited Edition 4K Uhd/Blu-ray that will make every day Halloween for horror fanatics and headbangers!
Rock ‘n’ roll will never die, in this 1980s cult favorite that stars Marc Price (Family Ties) as Eddie Weinbauer, a teenage outcast who idolizes Sammi Curr (Tony Fields), a heavy metal superstar.

Rock ‘n’ roll never dies. Sometimes, it even gets a second life. At least that’s the case for 1986 cult horror favorite Trick or Treat, as Synapse Films has delivered a surprise Halloween treat by launching preorders for the horror film’s 4K world premiere.
The limited special edition 4K release of Trick or Treat is strictly limited to a total of 6666 units!
The good news is that preorders are open now, with the release shipping as soon as next week, October 27.
The first feature from award-winning filmmaker Charles Martin Smith (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), the film featured a cast of soon to be household names including Marc Price (“Family Ties”) and Doug Savant (“Melrose Place”). Alongside rock icons Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne, Trick or Treat blends the best of the 1980s metal scene with the decade’s tongue and cheek take on the genre.

When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. Here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

If there’s one thing horror fans and filmmakers love to do, it’s compare notes on their favourite facets of the genre. About movies, about influences, about giant creepy-crawlies. And most of all, about the different driving trends of the many eras; what we were scared of, and how that bled so openly into the defining genre cinema of the time. From the atomic fallout of the 1950s and the creature features that followed, to the rise of exploitation, and the real-world killers behind the eventual slasher boom of the ’80s, it’s the subtext that an entire community is built on.
So there’s something particularly warm and comforting about Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott’s similarly-tinged doc Generation Terror, which seeks to unravel the real-world fears behind the particularly grisly output of the 2000s. An era often characterised by iffy remakes and gnarly extremity which made for...

Exclusive: Writer Jeffrey Reddick, creator of the long-running Final Destination horror franchise, is teaming with producer Todd Slater and more on Bloody Mary: Origins, a chilling new take on the classic urban legend.
Hailing from Slater’s Convoke Media, Vast Entertainment and DreamPunk Entertainment, the film is based on the New York Times bestseller Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan. The story focuses on a group of teenage girls who discover an ancient spell that conjures the real Bloody Mary. When the terrifying entity pulls one of the girls through the mirror, she becomes trapped in the past living out the real Mary Worth’s last days. With time running out, the others must discover a way to save their friend in the past while vanquishing a terrorizing Bloody Mary in the present.
Reddick wrote the script with John Stancari, who passed away in 2018 after a long battle with cancer.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, starring as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, captured the popular imagination with their stints in The X-Files. The duo’s contradicting nature with the former a believer of paranormality and extraterrestrial happenings and the latter, a skeptic, laid bare a gripping plot that as they investigated cases that for long carried the labels of being unsolvable due to the inexplicable chain of events attached to them.

The hit and miss nature of both early 2000s horror and the premise are quite obvious in today’s selection. While the original Willard and its sequel Ben are known entities, it’s not like they are the heaviest of hitters in terms of horror property. In fact, Willard is Exactly the type of property that I will always argue needs a remake. Well, needs is a strong word, but it lends itself better to a remake than something as perfect as the first Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Willard is a solid movie but underseen by today’s audience and would have maybe been more attractive to the audiences of 21 years ago who maybe grew up with the original. Sadly, that didn’t happen as it was arguably one of 2003’s biggest flops and that’s a huge bummer because not only is the movie fun with great, mostly practical effects,...

The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

It’s all about the color red for the 7th day of Creepmas; blood red, to be precise. Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas continues the holiday horror revelry, this time with holiday slashers that aim to paint the snow red with arterial spray and carnage. These holiday slashers demonstrate that there’s more to the realm of holiday slashers than killer Santas with a variety of Yuletide killers, from lonely security guards to mutated murderous snowmen. Save for one feel-good slasher to kick things off, today’s Creepmas offerings mainly capture the grimmer side of the holidays.

Horror has come into its own in the 21st century. This is not to say that the genre has ever not been one of the most interesting and creative in the long history of cinema. Since nearly the beginning of the art form, using moving images to scare audiences has been a gateway for aspirin filmmakers to break into the industry—or for even veterans to creatively something about the greater world by painting a landscape of anxiety.
Nonetheless, the 21st century (particularly beginning in its second decade) has brought a renewed appreciation for scary movies’ abilities to speak to audiences with more than just “boo.” With that in mind, we at Den of Geek have polled our staff and collected the below list of what we generally consider to be the best chillers of the fast quarter-century or so. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!

The Final Destination series is known for its creative and gruesome deaths, which are remembered as some of the best in the franchise. The concept of death coming to the survivors through apparent accidents is a core part of the franchise's identity, making the kills even more harrowing. The franchise embraces absurd comedy in its gruesome death traps, which have become a staple of the series and are executed with unsettling specificity.

The writers and actors strikes continued Friday with no sign of a speedy resolution, after a week of public back-and-forth did not appear to move the sides closer to an agreement.
A handful of leaders from the Writers Guild of America met with four top CEOs on Tuesday night, leading to a barrage of statements but no further in-the-room negotiations. Meanwhile, there has been no overture to SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14.
“I just feel we’re digging our heels in harder,” said Lang Parker, a SAG-AFTRA member, who was picketing at Fox.
On the writers’ side, there was widespread sentiment that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had failed in its bid to divide the union by releasing details of its latest offer. The WGA responded on Thursday that the studios’ proposal does not go far enough in protecting writers from existential threats.
“The writers are solid.

Final Destination 6 will expand the horror universe and offer a fresh start, going beyond adding a new rule to the series. The film will have an expansion of the world, adding a deep layer to the story. Final Destination 6 could introduce new rules and challenge the idea that Death's actions have a deeper meaning as part of a larger plan.
According to Final Destination creator Jeffrey Reddick, Final Destination 6 will expand the horror universe beyond what has been previously explored. Alongside James Wong and Glen Morgan, Reddick developed the screenplay for the original 2000 movie based upon the creator's spec script for an episode of The X Files. The Final Destination franchise centers on individuals escaping horrifying tragedies, only for Death to stalk them and claim the lives of the unlikely survivors through grisly, gory, and complex methods.

From their windowless sub-basement office, FBI Agents Fox “Spooky” Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) began their assignment on The X-Files chasing little green men, or rather gray, as Mulder points out during the third episode, “Squeeze.” The “Pilot” episode was about alien experimentation. “Deep Throat” was about pilots who fly experimental craft, possibly designed using extraterrestrial technology. Season 1 episode 3 was more down to earth, while still out of this world.
According to both his DNA report and FBI profile, animal control officer Eugene Victor Tooms (Doug Hutchison) would be due to wake up some time in 2023, if only he’d have stepped off that mini-mall escalator. It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that was released in 2000 and kicked off a franchise with four sequels and counting. The film in question is Final Destination (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.
Directed by James Wong, who crafted the screenplay with Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick, Final Destination has the following synopsis: Alex Browning is embarking on a trip to Paris when he experiences a premonition — he sees the plane explode moments after leaving the ground. Alex insists that everyone get off the plane and 7 people including Alex are forced to disembark. All watch as the plane actually explodes in a fireball. Last week, we heard the awesome news that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. A specific date for this release has not yet been announced, just that they’re hoping to get it out into the world by the end of 2023 – and ideally, of course, it would be out in October. Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures on this release, and now Felsher has revealed some details to Rue Morgue, confirming that we can expect to see a documentary, a commentary, and interviews on the disc.

The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat is one of my all-time favorites, but since the VHS era it has only gotten a barebones DVD release (which is available for a high price Here) and a Blu-ray in Germany. So this ranks high as some of the coolest news I’ve seen lately: Synapse Films is putting together a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) of Trick or Treat that they’re hoping to send out into the world by the end of 2023!
Full details on the release aren’t available at this time, as they’re too early in the process, but Synapse Films is collaborating with Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures to make sure it’s the best it can be. The livestream announcement can be viewed on Facebook.

In its most infamous monster-of-the-week episode, "Home," Fox's "The X-Files" took the idea of small-town American isolationism to the furthest extreme network TV would allow. First broadcast in October 1996 — two months before the TV Parental Guidelines system went into effect — "Home" juxtaposes Norman Rockwell images with hidden horrors that could be triggering even now for some viewers. In the span of one hour, the episode toggles between blue skies, baseball, a cornfield and Cadillac, '50s pop, references to "The Andy Griffith Show," and much uglier subject matter like infanticide, birth defects, home invasion, violence against Black people, and an incestuous mutant family.
To say it delved into taboos would be an understatement. This wouldn't be your average rerun: Fox withheld airing "Home" again for a full three years until October 1999, by which time the episode would be carrying the show's first and last TV-ma rating. "Only on Halloween ... would...

Black Christmas is an inherently feminist franchise. Released in 1974, Bob Clark’s original film follows a group of sorority sisters who are stalked and dispatched by a mysterious killer over the holiday break between semesters. During a busy Christmas party in the full sorority house, the girls receive a call from someone they refer to as the Moaner. They gather around the receiver and listen to a tirade of obscene gibberish that culminates in the deadpan threat, “I’m going to kill you.” True to his promise, the caller who will come to be known as Billy (Albert J. Dunk in an uncredited role) murders the sisters one by one while calling to harrass them from a phone line in their own attic. Clark’s film is a masterclass in atmospheric dread, perfectly blending the trimings of the holiday season with the terror of an unknown killer hiding in the shadows.

When the weather gets cold, the wind nips at your nose, and it’s starting to feel festive, you know it’s Christmas time. But not only do the usual slew of films come out, but that means for us horror heads, it’s time to watch some holiday carnage! And, while Christmas is over and done with for the year, holiday horror movies are good for a festive watch any time of the year! The original Black Christmas is a horror holiday season staple, but what about the remakes?
2006’s Black Christmas loosely continued the demented story of the psychopath killer, Billy, slaying a bunch of sorority girls. 2019’s Black Christmas eschewed this slasher storyline, and instead, went in a different direction with a supernatural patriarchal cult. Both have their own twisted version of holiday cheer, but which one should be thrown out with the fruitcake? Let’s grab...

The 1982 slasher film Unhinged is set to receive a second remake from the same producer. The original film is a project that owes a great debt to 1960's Psycho, following three young women who crash their car on their way to a music festival and hole up in a creepy rural home run by a woman named Marion and her handyman Norman, one of whom may be a murderer. The film was first remade in 2017 under the auspices of producer Scott Jeffrey, setting the film in England rather than America and renaming the sinister woman Miss Perkins in another nod to Psycho.
Per Bloody Disgusting, Jeffrey - who is also behind the public domain exploiting slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which is coming to theaters on February 13, 2023 - is now mounting another remake of the same project. The film is going to be a modernization of the original story,...

The producers of 2003’s Willard chose to nix “remake” from the film’s marketing vocabulary, but 2003’s Willard adaptation is irrefutably a remake of 1971’s furry social outcast chiller. At the forefront of 2000s remake trends, Glen Morgan‘s Willard features altered themes and a deeper thirst for suspense, going the “darker and grittier” route displayed by subsequent studio remakes (including Morgan’s 2006 Black Christmas slasher). Stephen Gilbert’s novel Ratman’s Notebooks inspires both pictures, although neither dare touch the subplot about “Ratman Robberies” — the narrator steals money from shopkeepers and neighbors before the whole workplace murder climax. Where’s my movie about a criminal aided by rat accomplices? Rat King in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will do, I guess.
It’s daffy to think that 2003’s Willard was hidden as a remake when you watch them back-to-back, but the general moviegoer wouldn’t know any different. That’s...

The "Final Destination" series, originally conceived by James Wong, Glen Morgan, and Jeffrey Reddick, ingeniously subverted slasher movie expectations. In a post-"Scream" horror landscape, the slasher subgenre was waning. The first "Final Destination," released in 2000, reimagined the slasher villain as not a masked maniac, but the specter of Death himself. Spurned after a group of attractive teens ostensibly cheat death, he tracks them down one by one, inciting grisly Rube Goldberg machinations to reclaim the souls that cheated him.
Those deaths ultimately defined the series, imbuing it with an all-too-real sense of slasher nihilism. Ordinary, everyday objects and circumstances were rendered deadly, and each subsequent entry...

When we think of a horror franchise, the first image that comes to mind is likely a slasher film. But the 2000s brought a horror franchise with an even more relentless villain than all of the heavy hitters like Freddy, Jason, Chucky, and Leatherface combined. Released at the precipice of the 21st century, the first "Final Destination" film is totally indicative of what the following decade of mainstream horror films would come to offer: Gory kills, edgy cynicism, and not to mention a weirdly prescient fear of fiery plane tragedies. Interestingly enough, the film that started the death-obsessed franchise was first conjured as a spec script for the beloved Fox series "The X-Files." Perhaps this is unsurprising, considering "Final Destination" co-writers Glen Morgan and James Wong (who also directed the film) penned several "X-Files" episodes — including "Home," one of the best (and most grisly) episodes the series ever aired.

Remember when awards shows were held in person and winners walked up to the stage to accept their trophies? Ahh, those were the days. One clip from the 1996 Screen Actors Guild ceremony (honoring work from 1995) is particularly fun to watch in retrospect as Gillian Anderson, current nominee for “The Crown,” is named the winner for “The X-Files.” The flummoxed actress takes her trophy, looks out at the hundreds of people in attendance and asks, “Where did you people come from?” Watch the SAG Awards flashback video above.
