Over the years, there has been a lot of debate among the fandom of the Marvel Cinematic Universe about the villains and who might as well be deemed the ultimate bad guy in the respective super-verse. In this mix, two of the most talked about names pitted against each other are none other than Kang the Conqueror and Thanos.

But as much as fans might argue about who’s better and who’s not, both the characters are pretty incredible in their respective places in the universe – though it’s likely that the one played by Jonathan Majors would have been a bigger threat than the one embodied by Josh Brolin. That brings us to the question: What if the MCU never fired Majors in the first place?

I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a very different place if these directors had been chosen to develop movies for Marvel Studios. The director is one of the most important figures in the development of any movie, but for Marvel Studios, this position is even more crucial. Some of Marvel's directors have become household names as they have helped to produce the most successful film franchise of all time, but many of them weren't Marvel Studios' only choice when planning the McU's projects.
Over the years, Marvel Studios has built strong relationships with brilliant directors, including Jon Favreau, the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, Ryan Coogler and Destin Daniel Cretton, among others. Had many of these notable directors chosen not to join the MCU, however, Marvel Studios had other options. In the 17 years since the MCU began, there have been many major directors who almost joined the MCU, which...

Picture Modern Family without Julie Bowen running the Dunphy household like a chaotic, wine-fueled CEO. Well, fun fact: another actress, who later popped up as a guest star, had first dibs on Claire but bailed because the whole America’s mom vibe felt way too restrictive.

Judy Greer's original idea for her MCU character's return in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would have made the polarizing Phase 5 movie so much better. Peyton Reed's third Ant-Man movie hit theaters in February 2023 and was immediately met with criticism, mostly because of its huge world-changing scale, which was far removed from the grounded and intimate nature of 2015's Ant-Man and 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp. It's not just the audience who wanted something else from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, either, as an Ant-Man franchise actor has also revealed her original vision.
Instead of focusing on a small-scale story, such as the battle against Darren Cross' Yellowjacket or the confrontation with Ghost, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought Paul Rudd's Scott Lang and his size-changing family face-to-face with the McU's biggest new threat. Kang the Conqueror's inclusion in Quantumania was then considered the strongest part of the movie,...

Ever since Ant-Man (2015), the superhero has grown exponentially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pun intended. Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang proves that sometimes, big things come in small packages and that size does matter, after all. With three solo films to his name, it didn’t take long for Ant-Man to become one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. Of course, Paul Rudd’s undeniable charm helped a ton, too. However, the Ant-Man we know now is far different from what it could have been.

With so much of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania set in the Quantum Realm, there wasn't time to continue exploring Scott Lang's personal life. As a result, both Bobby Cannavale's Jim Paxton and Judy Greer's Maggie Lang were missing from the threequel.
In an interview with The Direct, Greer broke her silence on being left out of the movie and admitted she was disappointed when Marvel Studios didn't ask her to return as Scott's ex-wife and Cassie's mother.
"I was in the last 'Guardians' as War Hog. War Pig, I believe, was my name in the last 'Guardians,' but in the first two 'Ant-Man' movies, I don't... There's been a lot of movies," she explained. All seven of the Bring It On movies can be watched in release order or any order the audience chooses. The teen cheerleading comedy series began in 2000 with the release of the very first Bring It On movie, which was helmed by Ant-Man's Peyton Reed. The film follows high school cheer captain Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) as she scrambles to come up with an original routine for her team the Toros to perform at a national competition after discovering her predecessor plagiarized choreography from rival squad, the East Compton Clovers, led by Gabrielle Union’s Isis.
Although Bring It On was initially dismissed as just another teen comedy, it’s become a cult classic in the years since, thanks to its exploration of race, class, and cultural appropriation through the lens of the wealthy, suburban, and predominantly white Toros, and the low-income, inner-city and predominantly Black East Compton Clovers. After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.
The best film of this brief renaissance by far was Peyton Reed's "Bring It On," which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Working from a spiky-sexy-hilarious screenplay by Jessica Bendinger, Reed's movie kicks off with an exuberant opening cheer routine and never loses an ounce of zip on its way to a thrilling...

2013's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is widely regarded as a box office disappointment, if not an outright flop, but a new report reveals that the MCU threequel actually did turn a small - and we mean small - profit.
The third Ant-Man movie had a reported budget of around $200 million (before marketing costs), and ended up taking in $476 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Analysts predicted that the movie would need to pass the $500 million mark just to break even, but not according to Forbes.
"The super hero flick debuted in February last year to a lukewarm reception and only grossed $476.07 million according to industry analyst Box Office Mojo. Studios typically receive around 50% of the takings meaning that Disney got around $238.05 million which was $92.05 million less than its net spending on making the movie, as we recently revealed."
Apparently, Quantumania earned a profit of $88,236 after expenses were factored in.

It's no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit what might be described as a rough patch in recent years. The MCU is still arguably the biggest thing going at the box office these days, with "Deadpool & Wolverine" making more than $1.3 billion this year. That said, films like "Black Widow," "Eternals," and especially "The Marvels" have struggled to break through with audiences in a meaningful way. The same could be said for last year's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," which shot out of the gate hot but then came crashing down to finish its global run with $476 million worldwide. Against a $200 million budget, it was considered a big disappointment, if not an outright flop. Yet, it's a flop that still turned a profit, albeit a very tiny one.

Actor Kirsten Dunst couldn’t have predicted playing a cheerleader in Bring It On would’ve become one of her most iconic roles. At the same time, Dunst was worried the movie’s popularity would’ve had a negative side effect on her career.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?
The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”
Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

Marvel Studios seems to have confirmed the end of Kang's story, as Doctor Doom will be appearing in the Multiverse Saga. Loki season 2's finale may have explored the perfect ending for Kang in the MCU. There are still several loose ends for Kang, but the Tva might be able to deal with these stories off-screen.
Marvel Studios seems to be replacing Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, but this might have already happened back in Loki season 2. In the wake of Infinity Saga villain Thanos' death in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel introduced Jonathan Majors to the MCU as Kang the Conqueror and his villainous variants, set to replace the Mad Titan in the Multiverse Saga. However, Kang's brief time in the MCU has been wrought with controversy, poor box office performances and confusing storylines, which put his future in the franchise in jeopardy.

Love it or hate it, Rotten Tomatoes is now more important than ever when it comes to whether moviegoers decide to check out the latest releases in theaters, and it's not uncommon for studios to tout scores as proudly as star ratings.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered hit after hit since Iron Man was released in 2008, though the Multiverse Saga has proven it's not immune from the wrath of critics.
After delivering its first Rotten movie in 2021, Marvel Studios had a so-so 2022 before a 2023 we're betting Kevin Feige and company would rather forget (particularly at the box office). Thanks to last year's strikes, 2024 will see the release of only one movie: the R-Rated Deadpool & Wolverine.
It's broken box office records and, with it now added to this list, looking back at how these movies fared on the review aggregator makes for interesting reading, particularly when they're stacked up against each other.

Chemistry has always been Hollywood’s secret sauce, and, for rom-coms at least, the high-water mark remains the pairing of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Most cineastes can name their first collaboration (Pillow Talk in 1959), but the others — Lover Come Back (1961) and Send Me No Flowers (1964) — don’t come to mind so quickly. As a brand, though, these two have more than endured in pop culture, and writers and directors have had to work harder and harder to find a way to recapture that magic, since we now know very well that it requires a great deal more than just putting a couple of good-looking famous people together.
Peyton Reed came close in 2003’s with his stylish, early-’60s period pastiche Down with Love, casting Renee Zellweger alongside Ewan McGregor, and Olivia Wilde certainly did not with 2022’s Don’t Worry Darling, lumbering Florence Pugh with Harry Styles in a risible ’50s-themed sci-fi.

Peyton Reed's 2018 film "Ant-Man and the Wasp" was released in the wake of "Avengers: Infinity War," one of the major team-up movies that occasionally punctuates the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Wasp" served, some have said, as a palate cleanser after the major, widely-seen event film, trying to keep the McU's mood light. This ethos was also employed with Reed's original "Ant-Man" from 2015, which followed "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
"Wasp" took place concurrently with the events of "Infinity War" and was a brisk, comedic heist movie featuring a very human villain played by Walton Goggins. Ant-Man, aka Scott Lang, (Paul Rudd) was under house arrest, which explains why he wasn't present for the big Thanos fight in "Infinity War." The Wasp, aka Hope van Dyne (née Pym), (Evangeline Lilly) and her father Hank (Michael Douglas) have, meanwhile, built a massive, high-tech shrinking tunnel which will serve as an entrance to the Quantum Realm,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had a bit of a boys' club vibe. The first official phase of the franchise that built up to "The Avengers" was spearheaded by Tony Stark's hard-partying ladies' man Tony Stark, while the most significant female members of the MCU to date have always been written as, at best, eye-rolling foils forced to acknowledge that most of their male colleagues are overgrown children who come through in the clutch when resolving a crisis that is partially of their own making.
This isn't much of a departure from the almost exclusively male-drawn and -written comic books of the 1960s-1980s that inspired the mostly male-directed MCU films. Aside from a boy scout like Steve Rogers (aka Captain America) or a cerebral conjuror like Doctor Strange, these guys have a good time off the clock. In a way, they have a kind of frat boy mentality.

It comes as no surprise that Christopher Nolan, who directed films like Inception and Interstellar, was ahead of his time. From changing times to superhero movies, Nolan is regarded as one of the most esteemed directors in Hollywood, and rightfully so. His statements ring true even after 7 years!

In the world of comic book movies, there has never been a stranger relationship than the one between Jon Watts and Spider-Man. One of the most critically as well as commercially favored and strongest IPs of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man’s entry into the MCU was placed in the hands of a creator with the strangest IMDb credits under his directorial section.
Known for directing music videos, shorts, a claymation movie, and television series, Watts couldn’t have been placed at a more substantial position and with a more high-risk, high-reward IP than directing Spider-Man’s first debut under the Marvel banner after the controversial 12-year-long saga at Sony.

The collaboration between the merc with a mouth and the clawed crusader has to work hard to mashup the alternate realities, but it could open portals to a lot of multiversal fun
It is somewhat ironic that just when the Marvel Cinematic Universe is entering its most intriguing phase, with the introduction of the multiverse and superheroes jetting in from all sorts of weird and wonderful corners of the Hollywood studio system, it has also begun to deliver its biggest duds. Chloé Zhao’s Eternals and Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania all seemed dull and listless compared to the endlessly colourful and imaginative episodes that populated the comic book macro-saga’s earlier phases.

Jonathan Majors’ Kang was supposed to be the big antagonist in the upcoming Avengers films and the climactic antagonist for the ‘Multiversal Saga’ of the MCU. However, the actor was dropped from future Marvel projects due to his legal troubles and eventual sentencing after being accused of assault.
The actor made his MCU debut with the Disney Plus series Loki, where he was introduced as He Who Remains, the protector of the Sacred Timeline. He also made an appearance in the box office disaster Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and was regarded as the best part of the film. Majors had mentioned his technique to get into character, which included a curated playlist that got the energy of the role right.

2023 may yet be remembered as the year the superhero movie died. Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" was released in February 2023 and was the first notable comic book-based bomb of the year. The film was notoriously re-jiggered throughout its production, with massive and expensive SFX being finalized up to the last minute. The official budget ballooned to $200 million, although separate reports have pegged the price tag as being closer to that of Disney's notorious box office misfire "John Carter" (which cost $263 million to make). "Quantumania" still grossed $464 million, but that's considered low for a Marvel movie.
Throughout 2023, more bombs dropped as superhero movies either lost money or were considered disappointments. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," "The Marvels," and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" all tanked, and while many went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3," it felt like the last kick in a closing series.

Michael Douglas wanted to have a “serious” death scene in 2023’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and requested his character be killed off.
As the actor promoted his Apple TV+ series Franklin, Douglas opened up about the Marvel film in which he played Dr. Hank Pym. Ahead of the third film in the Ant-Man saga, the actor said he asked for his character to die.
“This actually was my request for the third one,” Douglas said on The View. “I said I’d like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects.”
He continued, “But, that was on the last one. Now, I don’t think I’m going to show up.”

Kirsten Dunst was too honest when she admitted that money was part of the reason why she appeared in Spider-Man in 2002. While she claimed money was the reason actors mostly took up superhero projects, she also believed Sam Raimi’s movie was very different from modern superhero films. She felt that Raimi’s movies were indie films disguised as superhero films, which is what she would want if another Spider-Man movie were made.

Dunst would have loved to return to Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire, just to revisit the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter Parker. It appears that the Melancholia actress is ready to return to a fourth Spider-Man film, something Raimi has already expressed interest in making.

The director of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” has taken his film’s clean sweep of the Razzie Awards on the (bloodied) chin.
The feature — a slasher horror that caused a stir last year for its childhood-bludgeoning premise in which A.A. Milne’s beloved, cuddly bear and his sidekick Piglet go on a cannibalistic rampage — dominated the awards, winning the top prize of worst picture, plus director and screenplay (for Rhys Frake-Waterfield), screen couple (for Pooh and Piglet) and remake/rip-off/sequel.
“I’m surprised our micro-budget film is being compared to Hollywood, but nevertheless I don’t mind the dubious honor as it places me in the same pool as directors whose work I admire so much,” Frake-Waterfield told Variety.
The Razzies generally take aim at the expensive flops and fails of studios and A-list stars, but — as Frake-Waterfield notes — in focusing its attention on “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,...

The results are in on the 2024 Razzie Awards, and it was a very big (but not necessarily great) night for one movie and one actress this year.
The annual awards show, which took place one day before the 2024 Oscars on Saturday (March 9), hands out awards to performers and movies that have been deemed the “worst.”
Going into the ceremony, Expend4bles led the pack of nominees with 7 nods in categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off of Sequel.
However, when it came time for the awards to be handed out, another movie swept the field, picking up five Razzies. One actress also won big, being named Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress.
However, one Hollywood icon received redemption this year!

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

Edgar Wright's original Ant-Man script lacked the Quantum Realm, changing the McU's future trajectory. The Emotional thread of Janet Van Dyne's disappearance was crucial, shaping other characters' motivations. The Quantum Realm was vital for Avengers' time travel in Endgame, altering the Infinity Saga.
The original script for Ant-Man was very different from the final movie and would have completely scuppered the McU's Infinity War Saga and The Multiverse Saga. Just over a year ago, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was set to take Marvel Studios to the next level. A new villain was going to be introduced, setting the stage for several years’ worth of storytelling. And the movie itself was a giant-sizing of a franchise that was previously modest in scope. Instead, the Peyton Reed-directed movie heralded a year’s worth of missteps, box office blunders and PR nightmares. It was all uncharted territory for Marvel, which had steadily been generating box office gold for 15 years.
