Sean Baker‘s “Anora” is a wild and moving movie, a skewed fairy tale that veers from slapstick comedy and romance to action and tragedy, hitting every other tone on the emotional scale along the way. Yet Baker didn’t want a traditional score — there’s no music that isn’t source (predominantly the needle drops in the strip club where Mikey Madison‘s title character works), and thus none of the typical clues to guide the audience’s responses to the tonal shifts.
That created a challenge for sound designers, supervising sound editors, and re-recording mixers John Warrin and Andy Hay, whose sound environments had to serve the function that music would in a more conventional film. “It leads to a situation where sound design often behaves as score,” Hay told IndieWire. “Texturally, emotionally, what are we trying to say in any given moment? That leads us to various decisions.

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.
A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.
Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”
More than 80 people, including 16 Academy Award winners, signed the letter to the Academy, which is posted in full below.

The live-action feature nominees for the 57th annual Cas Awards for sound mixing (presented virtually on April 17) include “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, also split the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations with Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” with three nods.
Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as Cas Filmmaker.
In terms of the Oscar race, the Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.
Seven-time Oscar-nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan is this year’s Cas Career Achievement Honoree.

As expected, James Mangold’s ’60s racing epic “Ford v Ferrari,” animated feature “Toy Story 4,” and documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” took top honors at the 56th Cinema Audio Society Awards recognizing outstanding sound mixing.
As an Oscar bellwether, though, six of the past 10 Cas winners have gone on to win the sound mixing Oscar, which bodes well for “Ford v Ferrari.” However, Oscar-nominated “1917,” Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, was not in contention at the Cas Awards, which makes the race very competitive.
“We threw out the production sound,” said Dave Giammarco, the “Ford v Ferrari” re-recording mixer. “But when we got the real GT40, it helped inform the cut because it has its own signature [sound], and you want to wind it out and feel the whole length of it. Sometimes they would cut the shot to match the engine whine. And sometimes you...

Disney/Pixar’s billion-dollar sequel Toy Story 4 sporked away with the animated prize, and Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound unsurprisingly won the documentary award.
A pair of series that wrapped this past year took the top TV trophies: HBO’s Game of Thrones and Amazon’s Fleabag.

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

The Sound branch of the Academy often favors music-driven movies when it comes to the Mixing Oscar nominations, so Edgar Wright’s propulsive “Baby Driver” has a shot here, along with the elaborately layered sound mixes on “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Wonder Woman,” “Dunkirk” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

As expected, “La La Land” came away with the live-action sound mixing award at Saturday’s 53rd Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to Hollywood musicals is now a sure bet to win the Best Sound Mixing Oscar. (Sound Editing is still a race.)
Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” upset Disney’s “Zootopia” for animated feature honors. And HBO’S “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” earned the first-ever Cas documentary award.
TV winners included “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (movie or miniseries), “Game of Thrones,” which grabbed its fourth consecutive award for “Battle of the Bastards” (one-hour), “Modern Family: The Storm” (1/2-hour), and “Grease Live!” (specials),
Oscar-nominated sound engineer John Pritchett (“Road to Perdition,” “Memories of a Geisha”) received the Career Achievement Award and Jon Favreau won the Filmmaker Award for “The Jungle Book’s” innovative sound.

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.
“Interstellar” joined “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Unbroken” in receiving nominations for the 2014 Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, which will be presented on Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.
