When Zack Snyder made Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, there were no plans of building a Dceu. However, DC executives were eager to catch up with Marvel, who were thriving with their superhero franchise. In their misguided vision for a DC franchise, the studio tried many things unsuccessfully before opting for a complete restructuring under James Gunn.

The Dceu already underwent several course corrections before the restructuring, resulting in a bunch of canceled or abandoned projects. After the new regime took over control, all planned films in the former Dceu were effectively canceled.

After multiple issues, controversies, personnel changes, and mergers, the Dceu is finally done and dusted, with James Gunn taking over the reins as co-chief of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. The franchise, which was supposed to be a competitor to the MCU, crashed and burned but it was not without some genuinely good films.
The SnyderVerse is never happening. It is a miracle that fans even got the Snyder Cut. However, like how Gunn took the disastrous Suicide Squad and gave it a good direction with The Suicide Squad, there are a few more films from the Dceu that deserved better. Here are four films that need a second chance in the Dcu.

Between the Temples (Nathan Silver)
In a state of arrested development after his wife unexpectedly died from a freak accident, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) is suicidal, pleading to a truck to just run him over and begging that he be fired from his job as cantor at the local Jewish temple in upstate New York. While this set-up may not scream comedy, Between the Temples is in fact hilarious, packed with endless jokes and adoration for physical gags while we witness Ben find new meaning in life through an unexpected acquaintance. The Order (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After following the chilling character portraits in ‘Nitram’ and ‘The Snowtown Murders,’ Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place; and how people react in such situations of change.

“The Order” is a thriller movie starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan. It is written by Zach Baylin, and directed by Justin Kurzel.
This cinematic tour de force, set against the backdrop of 1980s Pacific Northwest, plunges viewers into a harrowing world of violent bank heists and armored car robberies that sent shockwaves through the region.
At the heart of this gripping narrative lies a chilling truth: these aren’t your run-of-the-mill criminals, but a group of Aryan supremacists led by the charismatic and dangerous Bob Mathews, brilliantly portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. Their audacious goal? To finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government, a premise that sends shivers down the spine and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
Enter FBI agent Terry Husk, brought to life by the ever-versatile Jude Law. As Husk delves deeper into the treacherous world of white supremacists, the film ratchets up the tension,...

Directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Zach Baylin, The Order is a gripping 2024 action thriller based on the acclaimed non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt.
Bringing to life one of the most chilling chapters in modern American history, the film explores the rise of a violent white supremacist terrorist group in the 1980s and the relentless FBI pursuit to bring it to justice. It stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron.
We sat down for a chat with actor Jude Law to talk about his role as producer and actor in the film. We also talked about the importance of retelling such important stories, especially during these dark times. Finally we couldn’t resist the temptation to ask hi8m about The Holiday, a Christmas movie that has continued to inspire and delight audiences almost 2 whole decades after it was first released.

A critically acclaimed thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult is getting a VOD release. Known for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain, two films that earned him Academy Award nominations, Law has maintained an impressive catalog across his 38-year career. The actor currently leads the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast on Disney+, a particular bright spot for the franchise in terms of audience reception, and has appeared in other major blockbusters over the years, including Sherlock Holmes, Captain Marvel, and Fantastic Beasts. Law also starred in fan-favorite romantic movies Closer and The Holiday.
When it comes to Hoult, whose star has been on the rise for the past decade, X-Men: First Class and Warm Bodies seemed to kickstart his mainstream career. Since then, he has taken on various projects that achieved commercial success and/or garnered praise from audiences, reprising his role as Beast in multiple X-Men sequels...

As much as Jurnee Smollett is an actor, she could also be considered an archivist — given how much of her 38-year career she’s spent capturing elements of untold history.
Smollett has been in front of the camera since she was 10 months old, but began acting in earnest when she was 5, appearing on sitcoms like “Full House” and “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.” Since then, Smollett played Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Smallest Freedom Fighter” (8-year-old Sheyann Webb) in the 1999 TV movie “Selma, Lord Selma”; the sole female debater at a historically Black college in 1935 Texas in 2007’s “The Great Debaters”; a woman who escapes slavery in the 2016 series “Underground”; and a fiery Civil Rights activist fighting both societal and supernatural monsters in 2020’s “Lovecraft Country,” HBO’s acclaimed sci-fi drama for which Smollett earned her first Emmy nomination.

Peacock is planning a reboot of Friday Night Lights, but do we need a new version of the acclaimed show?
Reboots are all the rage in Hollywood; everyone knows that. TV shows just can't get enough as we've got Dexter: Original Sin, a new version of Suits, and more in the works. So it's not too shocking that Peacock has announced plans for a new take on Friday Night Lights.
Per TV Line, the project comes from the original shows' executive producers Jason Katims, Peter Berg, and Brian Grazer. The show is intended to be a true reboot of the original series with new characters and perhaps setting, with the logline hinting it's a tale of how the football team helps a small Texas town deal with tragedy.

Friday Night Lights is getting the reboot treatment, and Deadline reports that Peacock has scooped up the project after a competitive bidding war with Netflix.
This new iteration will “be set following a devastating hurricane, when a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship and become a beacon of light for their town.“
The franchise is based on the non-fiction novel Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team and a Dream by H.G. Bissinger. Peter Berg directed a feature film based on the novel in 2004, which starred Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Derek Luke, Garrett Hedlund, Jay Hernandez, and more. Two years later, Berg developed the acclaimed TV series of the same name. When thinking about why he wanted to star in a film like “The Order” during this time in history, Jude Law reflects that the idea of division through hatred is something that’s been around forever but also highlighted a story that he felt needed to be amplified. “It shone light on the early forming of hate groups and extremist groups in the States and by going back, telling a story that somehow has these uncomfortable relevances to today is a great way of talking and having a conversation starter,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He adds, “By concentrating on getting that authentic, it seemed to be effective as a piece that’s commenting on where we are now.”

Deadline understands that the NBCU streamer beat out Netflix to land a new adaptation of the high school football series in a competitive battle that has played out over the last few days.
Universal Television will produce the series, which comes from Jason Katims, who was the original showrunner, original director Peter Berg and producer Brian Grazer. The trio will exec produce alongside Kristen Zolner for Imagine Entertainment.
The new series, which is now in development at Peacock, will be set following a devastating hurricane, when a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship and become a beacon of light for their town.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series highlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest films continues with The Order, Justin Kurzel’s period crime drama based on a chilling and timely true story. The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated King Richard scribe Zach Baylin.
The film starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett has been hitting the fall festival circuit beginning with its world premiere at Venice. It has since opened the Zurich and Marrakesh film festivals and hit theaters in limited release this past weekend via Vertical.
Baylin’s script, adapted from the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, centers on a string of violent robberies and other crimes beginning in the early 1980s Pacific Northwest that the FBI, and specifically veteran agent Terry Husk (Law), figured out were being perpetrated by a white supremacist group plotting to overthrow the government.

Actor Denzel Washington’s passion for directing led him to film The Great Debaters, which he recruited many young stars to film. One of those stars was Jurnee Smollett, who he called out after noticing she wasn’t performing to her full potential in the film.

Washington was the one who originally reached out to Smollett, brother of Jussie Smollett, first for 2007’s The Great Debaters. She was one of many younger actors who’d be cast as a student on a debate team in the 1930s. But although Washington had Smollett in mind to star, she still had to prove herself by performing alongside the Oscar-winner.

Director Justin Kurzel was not at all familiar with the story of Bob Mathews until he started reading the script for “The Order” written by Zach Baylin. “I’d sort of read the first 15 pages and I was like, oh wow, this reminds me of these great seventies films that Friedkin and Lumet used to kind of do,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above).
As he read the script he found himself more and more captivated by the subject of American extremism. “I wasn’t aware of ‘The Turner Diaries.’ I wasn’t aware of this sort of organization such as The Order. I was curious. I’ve been interested in the past with films that I’ve done here about how communities can be influenced by figures that can manipulate them to believe in their own kind of ideology.”

What a disheartening reflection on our times that The Order ranks among the most relevant dramas of the last ten years. It shouldn’t. 2024 should not see us still struggling with the issues of white supremacy and armed extremist groups. Yet here we are.
The Order is based on the true story of Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult) and his followers, a violent neo-Nazi group responsible for a series of bank robberies, bombings, and murders in the 1980s. FBI Agent Terry Husk (two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law) is sent to the Pacific Northwest to investigate the Aryan Nation with little in the way of support. The local sheriff is willfully blind to the extensive presence of Nazis in his community and tries to blow off Agent Husk. But deputy sheriff Jamie Bowen steps forward, volunteering his help...

Early in “The Order,” the ’80s-set historical crime thriller, there is a chillingly timely stand-off between the staid establishment and the insurgent next generation. Aryan Nation founder Richard Butler (Victor Slezak) attempts, and fails, to defuse Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), the charismatic young leader of an ultra-violent and extremely organized splinter group planning an armed white supremacist revolution. “Robert, you have a gift … a voice,” says Butler, clad in a conventional trench coat over a full suit and tie. Eye-to-eye on the dusty dirt road, Matthews stands defiant in a weathered waffle shirt barely tucked into belted, worn-in jeans.
“Justin [Kurzel, the director] and I wanted Bob to feel really recognizably all-American,” costume designer Rachel Dainer-Best told IndieWire. “He’s super simple — wearing jeans and a T-shirt for basically the whole movie.” Because photos of the real Matthews and his acolytes proved rare, she studied ‘70s and ‘80s images of the Aryan Nation...

Warning: Minor Spoilers for The Order!Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult are on opposite ends of the law in the new crime thriller The Order, with Law playing FBI agent Terry Husk and Hoult playing Bob Mathews, the leader of a white supremacist terrorist cell. The former tracking the latter makes up much of the narrative, but director Justin Kurzel seems more concerned with the effect each man's respective ethos has on their life and surroundings. Mathews has constructed a community based on his extreme hatred, while Husk's dogged pursuit of Good has alienated him from his community — meaning both live in very different warped realities.

The Order is about hate, though not quite in the way you'd expect. It seems an obvious theme, given the story follows a white supremacist terrorist cell and the FBI's effort to stop them, and some space is given to the hateful doctrine they live by. But the movie is less interested in hate ideologically as it is in the feeling. And director Justin Kurzel is less interested in explaining that feeling than he is in observing it and its effects. Surround that goal with across-the-board quality, and you have a consistently tense crime thriller that leaves a lasting mark.
A lone FBI agent, stationed in a small Idaho town, uncovers a disturbing connection between a series of violent bank robberies and a white supremacist group known as The Order. As the investigation deepens,...

Plot: A burnt-out FBI agent (Jude Law) tries to shut down a right-wing militia run by a white supremacist (Nicholas Hoult) who’s planning an armed insurrection.
Review: The Order is a slickly made, true-crime thriller that tells a pretty compelling story; in the mid-eighties, a group calling themselves The Order pulled off a series of violent robberies and also bombed synagogues and porn theatres, all of which was inspired by a book called “The Turner Diaries”, which was written by the leader of the National Alliance, which was one of the most powerful Neo Nazi organizations in the United States.
In The Order, Nicholas Hoult, in a role that casts him way against type, plays Robert Jay Mathews, who put together a violent, heavily armed militia that began carrying out a series of brutal assassinations and robberies. In the film, this puts them in the crosshairs of Jude Law’s Agent Husk,...

During the pandemic lockdown and in the frigid months of more recent years, many home viewers became hooked on “true crime” stories that were once the lifeblood of broadcast TV news “magazine” shows, but now have entire cable networks devoted to them. And the streaming apps are simply bursting with documentaries and “limited” series that are comprised of recreations and “talking head” interviews. While motion pictures had been the showcase for non-fiction law enforcement tales, recently we’ve seen more of the “over the top” “stunt-heavy” action blockbusters. Now, in between the year-end family fantasies and the somber “Oscar bait”, here’s a nifty thriller that evokes the feel of those zippy “B pictures”. Ah, but there’s a twist in that much of the story still resonates today, several decades later. Yes, on a cold day almost four years ago, the country was dealing with the legacy of The Order.

When Justin Kurzel set out to direct The Order— he couldn’t have known how its real-life history of white supremacy and anti-government would continue to evolve and become yet more significant.
The film, written by Zach Baylin and based on the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, follows the 1980s story of real-life white supremacist group The Order led by Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult) and the FBI agent determined to stop him, played by Jude Law, who also served as producer on the project.
In his doctrine, Matthews had heavily referenced William Luther Pierce’s 1978 novel, The Turner Diaries, which depicts a right-wing assault on the Capitol. And Kurzel recalls how as the events of January 6 unfolded, a chilling present-day parallel emerged.
“I just remember watching that event,” Kurzel says, “and then also seeing some of the photographs and imagery that were coming in from the day.

The Order is as much a crime thriller as it is a psychological drama, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it all the more fascinating. Interviews: Jude Law, Tye Sheridan and director Justin Kurzel discuss their crime thriller The Order
Since it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, The Order has been at the top of many lists for contenders this awards season. From director Justin Kurzel, The Order boasts stellar performances from Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, and Jurnee Smollett. Tackling a true story that occurred in 1983 and 1984, which general audiences may not be familiar with, The Order is a stark and gritty thriller with a mesmerizing performance by Jude Law. Our own Chris Bumbray gave it a solid review, which you can read here.

Zach Baylin knows the buzzwords already: “timely,” “prescient,” “controversial.” But the screenwriter behind such true stories as “King Richard” and “Gran Turismo” is also a student of history, so when it comes to his latest film, which follows the unnerving true story of a homegrown white supremacist militant group, he doesn’t get too caught up in the quickie designations. After all, he knows something about following a story beyond just cawing headlines and catchy descriptors.
Baylin’s latest, the Justin Kurzel-directed “The Order,” tracks the final days of neo-Nazi militant Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), as he gathers together his eponymous terrorist group (a rag-tag assemblage of white supremacists) as they plot bank robberies, car heists, and government overthrow in the Pacific Northwest in the early ’80s. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult actually followed each other while prepping for The Order. The movie, which is based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt's nonfiction book The Silent Brotherhood, is set in 1983 Idaho and follows FBI agent Terry Husk's (Law) investigation into a rash of bank robberies that he suspects is being masterminded by Bob Mathews (Hoult), the leader of a group of radicals. The upcoming The Order, which had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, also stars Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron.

If you had any doubt that the awards season was in full swing, Sunday night’s 15th Annual Governors Awards ceremony answered it.
If you are, or in any way think you might have a shot at an Oscar nomination this year, and were in Los Angeles, it is most likely I might have run into you last night at Ovation’s Ray Dolby Ballroom where this jam packed ceremony saluting this year’s honorary Oscar recipients took place. In fact, just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ PR team’s tip sheet was two pages of 207 single spaced names who were expected to attend (and by my count did) show up, not just to honor the deserving winners of the evening, but also perhaps to be in this place which is packed with Oscar voters who might be reminded to see your movie, if they haven’t done so already.
