It is one-and-done for Black Cake. Hulu has cancelled the drama series after one season on the streaming service. Created by Marissa Jo Cerar, the eight-episode first season debuted in November and finished in December 2023.

Hulu is not proceeding with a second season of its original drama series Black Cake, starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac. The news is not surprising as it’s been 10 months since Season 1 ended its run on the streamer.

This marks a formal resolution for the series, from Women of the Movement creator Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey‘s Harpo Films and Aaron Kaplan‘s Kapital Entertainment, whose fate had been sealed for months. It didn’t necessarily have to be — I’d heard chatter that Netflix was interested in picking up the acclaimed drama but the inquiry didn’t go far as program relocations from one major streamer to another are very rare — and complicated — in the era of streaming wars.

Netflix had been among the original suitors for the project, which landed at Hulu in 2021 after a bidding war.

It’s one and done for Hulu’s Black Cake, which will not be back for a second season at the streamer, TVLine has learned.

“Black Cake” won’t be returning for a second season at Hulu.

The streamer has opted not to renew the series, based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel of the same name, for a second installment. The news comes just under a year after “Black Cake” debuted in November 2023.

Taking place across Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England and Southern California, the generational saga centers on a runaway bride named Covey (Mia Isaac), who disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned — or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder in the late 1960s, according to the official logline.

Her story is uncovered 50 years later in California when widow Eleanor Bennett (Chipo Chung) loses her battle with cancer and leaves her two estranged children, Byron (Ashley Thomas) and Benny (Adrienne Warren), a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America.

Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment, the leading film and television industry organization for Asian and Pacific Islanders, on Monday night presented its second annual Radiance Gala, celebrating the achievements of Asian and Pacific Islander Women and Non-Binary artists, artisans, and leaders in entertainment, presenting honors to actress Sandra Oh, the teams behind Lionsgate‘s Joy Ride and Hulu’s Black Cake, and more.

At the event held at at the Ebell in Los Angeles, Oh was presented with the Luminary Award by Jessica Yu, the director of her 20th/Hulu comedy Quiz Lady. And yet the people she left behind were still unprepared for the whopper of a secret revealed during Black Cake Season 1 Episode 5.

Oh, bless this series' heart; it has everything except the kitchen sink. Scratch that; it has plenty of those, too.

The family melodrama runs strong during this series, with enough plot twists to rival a soap opera.

At the risk of sounding redundant, this series is at its best when it focuses more exclusively on Covey or Eleanor.

Chipo Chung has a quiet way of carrying the series in the more current storylines, as Mia Isaac managed to do so phenomenally in the past.

It sucks to say it, but Benny and Byron just aren't that compelling.

The HBO hit show, His Dark Materials, is set to return later this year with an eight-episode run for season 3, which will conclude the series. The show will premiere on December 5 with the first two episodes back-to-back on HBO, then will be available to stream on HBO Max. The show will then, be premiering two episodes each week, culminating in the series finale, which will premiere on December 26.

HBO has released the latest trailer for the show as well as a new poster and images.

His Dark Materials is returning soon for its third season and final season on HBO. Starring Dafne Keen, Amir Wilson, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Simone Kirby, Will Keen, Jade Anouka, Ruta Gedminstas, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jamie Ward, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Simon Harrison, Chipo Chung, Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe, and Lin-Manuel Miranda star in the fantasy drama series.

Based on the book series by Philip Pullman, the story revolves around an orphan (Keen) who goes looking for a missing friend and discovers a link to a mysterious substance called Dust. This leads her to an epic journey that takes her to other worlds.

"There are forces out there, Lyra, that you can't begin to understand."

So says everyone's favorite bad mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), at the start of the long-awaited trailer for "His Dark Materials" season 3. The promo makes good on that promise, too, showing the series' heroes Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) getting caught up in the middle of a war between Lyra's equally bad dad Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and all the powers at the Authority's disposal. Also, there are angels, some familiar witches, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby (!), who's (sorta?) back from the dead after his tragic demise at the end of season 2.

All this and more awaits us in season 3, which adapts the third and final entry in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novel trilogy "The Amber Spyglass," aka the weirdest chapter in Pullman's subversive re-imagining of John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost.

The end of His Dark Materials is almost here.

HBO announced Friday that the third and final season of the fantasy drama is set to premiere Monday, December 5, at 9 p.m.

Two episodes will be available on premiere night, and two episodes will air each week until the series finale on Monday, December 2.

The final season is based on The Amber Spyglass, the final novel in Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy.

"In the final chapter of this epic fantasy series, Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, must journey to a dark place from which no one has ever returned," the logline reads.

"As her father’s great war against the Authority edges closer, they will learn that saving the worlds comes at a terrible price."

The series stars Dafne Keen as Lyra, Amir Wilson as Will, Ruth Wilson as Mrs.

Just like a balloon, His Dark Materials‘ Lee Scoresby has risen.

The fantasy series’ final season trailer, which HBO released Friday, ended with a shot of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Lee, who was super dead by the final moments of the Season 2 finale. (If you’ve read Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novels, on which the show is based, Lee’s reappearance makes sense. But if you haven’t, we won’t spoil you as to why or how he’s somehow still around.)

Filming is underway on the third and final season of His Dark Materials, the BBC and HBO’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s beloved fantasy adventure novels.

Season 3 will be based on The Amber Spyglass, the most complex and ambitious of Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy of novels, as Lyra and Will travel through different worlds to find each other.

Bad Wolf, in association with New Line Cinema, cracked open the clapperboards on May 24, according to a picture of Dafne Keen (Lyra) and Amir Wilson (Will) released to celebrate the shoot.

Production is taking place at Wolf Studios Wales stages and on location throughout Wales and England. Directors are Amit Gupta, Charles Martin, and Weronika Tofilska.

UK actors’ union Equity has set up an independent commission to address the org’s anti-racism work following the mass resignation of its existing Race Equality Committee after an incident involving the actor Laurence Fox.

Fox provoked controversy on an episode of BBC show Question Time when, among numerous comments about race, he claimed it was “racist” for him to be called “a white, privileged male.” The actor was widely condemned for the remarks and Equity’s Race Equality Committee publicly labelled him a “disgrace” on social media.

The post prompted Equity to apologize to the actor, and the Committee resigned in protest.

Now, the org has set up an Independent Commission for Race Equality (Icre), which it stated is not a replacement for the previous Committee. It will explore how their resignations affected the union and will analyze its wider work on anti-racism, including creating a roadmap for improved...

Over 100 well-known names – including writers, actors, directors and musicians – have signed a pledge supporting Lorde's decision not to perform in Israel.

The statement was published in The Guardian following backlash over the Kiwi singer’s cancellation of her concert in Tel Aviv. It is a direct response to a full page ad published in the Washington Post on January 1 which called Lorde a bigot and also attacked her homeland of New Zealand.

“We deplore the bullying tactics being used to defend injustice against Palestinians and to suppress an artist’s freedom of conscience. We support Lorde’s right to take a stand,” reads the letter in The Guardian. "Shmuley Boteach, the author and promoter of the advert, supports Israel’s illegal settlements and wrote last month on Breitbart to thank Donald Trump for “electrifying the world” with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in defiance of international law.

She stars as 26 year old Ivy Moxham who escapes from the cellar that's been her prison for the last thirteen years. Returning home to her family and to her life, this is only the beginning of the story.
