Sci-fi shows create unique circumstances where one or more scientific limitations in the present world have been broken. Some of the most bingeworthy sci-fi TV shows just dive into their worlds and provide exposition about the rules of their societies and the laws of nature in their universes. Not all shows go too deep with their lore, though, and some fun and lighthearted sci-fi shows are more invested in exploring the cool consequences of the sci-fi concept instead of focusing on how the sci-fi world works and how it came to be.
But, some sci-fi shows like to spend time on why their worlds came to be and focus on the mystery element of the science fiction. Some of the best British sci-fi shows of all time are all about the mysteries of the Universe. The characters try and figure out the various anomalies that made their world the way it is,...

Last year, a series called Black Cake was released on Hulu and Disney based on the New York best-selling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. The murder mystery thriller ended its first season after the finale debuted on December 6, 2023. Following the conclusion, there were some hopeful updates regarding the second season.

Hulu is not proceeding with a second season of its original drama series Black Cake, starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac. The news is not surprising as it’s been 10 months since Season 1 ended its run on the streamer.
This marks a formal resolution for the series, from Women of the Movement creator Marissa Jo Cerar, Oprah Winfrey‘s Harpo Films and Aaron Kaplan‘s Kapital Entertainment, whose fate had been sealed for months. It didn’t necessarily have to be — I’d heard chatter that Netflix was interested in picking up the acclaimed drama but the inquiry didn’t go far as program relocations from one major streamer to another are very rare — and complicated — in the era of streaming wars.
Netflix had been among the original suitors for the project, which landed at Hulu in 2021 after a bidding war.

“Black Cake” won’t be returning for a second season at Hulu.
The streamer has opted not to renew the series, based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel of the same name, for a second installment. The news comes just under a year after “Black Cake” debuted in November 2023.
Taking place across Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England and Southern California, the generational saga centers on a runaway bride named Covey (Mia Isaac), who disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned — or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder in the late 1960s, according to the official logline.
Her story is uncovered 50 years later in California when widow Eleanor Bennett (Chipo Chung) loses her battle with cancer and leaves her two estranged children, Byron (Ashley Thomas) and Benny (Adrienne Warren), a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America.

Hulu’s adaptation of Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut, “Black Cake,” delves into the intricate roots of a mysterious family tree. It skillfully navigates the journey of a family unraveling the complex and often tragic past of their mother, Eleanor Bennett, following her demise.
Eleanor (portrayed by Chipo Chung) passes away in Southern California, leaving behind a history unknown to her family, including her estranged daughter Benny (played by Adrienne Warren from “The Woman King”) and ambitious son Byron (Bashy from “Top Boy”). Eleanor’s will discloses an audio recording filled with long-buried secrets. Benny and Byron, not on the best of terms, discover a note instructing them to share a small black cake in the freezer when the time is right.
The series draws its name from a Caribbean dessert, reflecting its own intricate history. Like the tale told in “Black Cake,” this dessert, soaked in rum and laden with fruits,...

The Bennett siblings are doing incredibly well, given all the revelations they're bombarded with at once.
Eleanor Covey Bennett has Lived, and she died with more secrets than any government agency around the globe!
And yet the people she left behind were still unprepared for the whopper of a secret revealed during Black Cake Season 1 Episode 5.
Oh, bless this series' heart; it has everything except the kitchen sink. Scratch that; it has plenty of those, too.
The family melodrama runs strong during this series, with enough plot twists to rival a soap opera.
At the risk of sounding redundant, this series is at its best when it focuses more exclusively on Covey or Eleanor.
Chipo Chung has a quiet way of carrying the series in the more current storylines, as Mia Isaac managed to do so phenomenally in the past.
It sucks to say it, but Benny and Byron just aren't that compelling.

“Black Cake” showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar and director Natalia Leite agree that the launch of the series’ first three episodes at once will enhance the audience’s curiosity and keep them watching the show.

Since the pandemic, Black female-driven content with universal appeal has found a home on Hulu. Stepping away from the cliched stories that have too often defined others’ efforts, each new project from the streamer, be it “The 1619 Project” or the recent “The Other Black Girl,” grows increasingly more ambitious. “Black Cake,” produced by Oprah Winfrey, pushes the boundaries even further by centering on a biracial, immigrant woman’s experience.
Adapted from Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times-bestselling novel of the same name, the sweeping eight-episode family drama from showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar revolves around a Jamaican Chinese woman who has lived an epic life spanning various parts of the globe. The problem is: Her past has been kept hidden from her children. Only through a flash drive of audio recordings played after her death do they learn that they know very little of her story. While many people have only a few personal confidences tucked away in their hearts, others envelop themselves in a lifetime of lies to survive. Based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times best-selling novel and adapted for television by Marissa Jo Cerar, “Black Cake” is an eight-episode odyssey stretching from Jamaica’s shores to Scotland’s glens. The series tells one young woman’s story of survival and perseverance whose circumstances and choices reverberate into her children’s lives a generation later.

Hulu released a trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel “Black Cake” on Monday.
The generational saga, which comes from showrunner and executive producer Marissa Jo Cerar, combines a murder mystery with family drama. The first three episodes of “Black Cake” release Nov. 1 on Hulu. After the premiere, new episodes will release every Wednesday through Dec. 6.
“I’m sorry. Don’t hate me,” Adrienne Warren’s Benny says as she rushes into an office where her brother Byron (Ashley Thomas) already sits waiting for her. “I had car stuff and then I couldn’t find my keys.”
“You don’t get to just blow in here acting like you care all of a sudden,” Thomas’ Byron responds coldly.
“I’m not acting,” Benny replies. “Ma’s dead.”
“Read the will, please,” is all Byron says in return.

What’s the old saying, ‘man plans and the Authority laughs’? Between the first announcement of BBC/HBO fantasy adaptation His Dark Materials in November 2015 and the arrival of its final season in December 2022, a great many plans were forced to change. 2020’s multiple Covid-19 lockdowns left the third season’s filming schedule up in the air, and when it came back down again not everything – or everyone – was in the same place.

"There are forces out there, Lyra, that you can't begin to understand."
So says everyone's favorite bad mother, Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson), at the start of the long-awaited trailer for "His Dark Materials" season 3. The promo makes good on that promise, too, showing the series' heroes Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) getting caught up in the middle of a war between Lyra's equally bad dad Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and all the powers at the Authority's disposal. Also, there are angels, some familiar witches, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby (!), who's (sorta?) back from the dead after his tragic demise at the end of season 2.
All this and more awaits us in season 3, which adapts the third and final entry in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" novel trilogy "The Amber Spyglass," aka the weirdest chapter in Pullman's subversive re-imagining of John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost.

Just like a balloon, His Dark Materials‘ Lee Scoresby has risen.
The fantasy series’ final season trailer, which HBO released Friday, ended with a shot of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Lee, who was super dead by the final moments of the Season 2 finale. UK actors’ union Equity has set up an independent commission to address the org’s anti-racism work following the mass resignation of its existing Race Equality Committee after an incident involving the actor Laurence Fox.
Fox provoked controversy on an episode of BBC show Question Time when, among numerous comments about race, he claimed it was “racist” for him to be called “a white, privileged male.” The actor was widely condemned for the remarks and Equity’s Race Equality Committee publicly labelled him a “disgrace” on social media.
The post prompted Equity to apologize to the actor, and the Committee resigned in protest.
Now, the org has set up an Independent Commission for Race Equality (Icre), which it stated is not a replacement for the previous Committee. It will explore how their resignations affected the union and will analyze its wider work on anti-racism, including creating a roadmap for improved...

This Into The Badlands review contains spoilers.
Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 13
There’s a scene towards the beginning of the episode where the Magnus of the Black Lotus (Francis Magee) challenges Sunny’s newly revealed long-lost sister Kannin (Eugenia Yuan) with what seems like impossible task: activating her brother’s dark-eyed powers. He picks up a huge hourglass (which he calls “a souvenir from Azra”), turns it over, and sets it down on his table. “You have until the sand runs out to turn him,” Magnus says, and walks out the room, leaving Kannin to wonder how the hell she’s going to make Sunny a dark-eyed one in the next 30 odd minutes.
This scene feels like a metaphor for the writing of this entire episode. “You have until the...

Over 100 well-known names – including writers, actors, directors and musicians – have signed a pledge supporting Lorde's decision not to perform in Israel.
The statement was published in The Guardian following backlash over the Kiwi singer’s cancellation of her concert in Tel Aviv. It is a direct response to a full page ad published in the Washington Post on January 1 which called Lorde a bigot and also attacked her homeland of New Zealand.
“We deplore the bullying tactics being used to defend injustice against Palestinians and to suppress an artist’s freedom of conscience. We support Lorde’s right to take a stand,” reads the letter in The Guardian. "Shmuley Boteach, the author and promoter of the advert, supports Israel’s illegal settlements and wrote last month on Breitbart to thank Donald Trump for “electrifying the world” with his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in defiance of international law.
