Review: While you may love a good action spy movie, give me a mature, calculated drama about espionage any day. While there is a time and a place for James Bond, Ethan Hunt, or Jason Bourne, the psychological intensity of a well-crafted thriller does not come along every day. The Agency, based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes, is a solid showcase of deliberate and complex tension done right. With a masterful cast led by Michael Fassbender and Jodie Turner-Smith, The Agency certainly showcases some intense action. Still, it thrives on solid performances from the rock-solid ensemble of acting talent.

Anderson has a deep admiration and respect for journalists, but in a post Donald Trump-era she’s grown increasingly frustrated with news outlets that have lost focus on their core mission.

“It’s frustrating when publications that don’t lead with integrity, whether in news or entertainment, and devolve into tabloid journalism,” Anderson tells Variety. “There are so few left that respect the truth, the job and the integrity of individuals. Among streaming original movies, “Scoop” managed a solid break for Netflix while Amazon Prime Video’s “Road House” hung tough in its third full week in release, as reported by Luminate in its weekly Top 10 Streaming Originals charts for series and movies.

“Ripley,” the much talked-about adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic fraudster saga “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” from Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian, debuted with about 670.1 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. That translates to about 1.5 million views.

A sleeper entrant at No. 2 was Netflix’s unscripted crime docu “Files of the Unexplained,” with 531.3 million minutes watched across eight episodes. The show’s audience grew 276% in its first full week in release after premiering on April 3.

From All The President’s Men to Spotlight, countless films have looked at the reporters and journalists who have investigated the most significant revelations of all time and have garnered awards for the recreation of the tireless journey. The distance between the event and the dramatization often reminds audiences of the stakes at play, but Scoop chronicles a news story that occurred just six years ago. Led by Billie Piper as the producer who secured the shocking interview alongside Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai, Keeley Hawes, and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, Scoop has some exciting stories from an insider’s point of view. Still, it fails to generate anything we did not already get from the broadcast itself.

Scoop is a well-made but hard-to-watch film, believe me that’s a good thing. The Netflix film does everything right from its pacing to its performances giving us an insight into the subject and people behind one of the most scandalous things ever to come out of the British Royal family.

Directed by Philip Martin, Scoop sheds some light on what went on behind the scenes of Prince Andrew‘s News Night interview with Emily Maitlis which was later described as less a car crash than “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.” Prince Andrew was a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein and was also accused of molesting an underage girl, but he is still walking freely.

Netflix doesn’t at all try to hold back from making fun of Prince Andrew in their latest film, Scoop. The Philip Martin-directed film is based on former BBC editor Sam McAlister’s book about securing one of the most sensational interviews of Prince Andrew in the history of the BBC. The context is rather grave, as the interview was focused on the grim subject of Andrew’s friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.

Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

The cast shines in Scoop, especially Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, delivering mesmerizing performances. The movie's fast-paced direction by Philip Martin keeps the story engaging and energetic throughout. Despite strong performances, the characters' mixed motivations in the pursuit of the big story lead to flawed portrayals.

As the media landscape continues to grow and the role of news in society becomes all the more prevalent, the world of journalism has become a hot topic for movies and TV. Whether it be the fictional character of HBO's Emmy-winning drama The Newsroom or the Best Picture Oscar-winning true story of Spotlight, the lens of journalists has become a compelling one to explore in the midst of the "fake news" boom and social media giving everyone a voice. On November 16, 2019, the BBC got a “scoop” that just might have saved Britain’s premier network for news. That is the night it aired its seemingly impossible “get” of Hrh Prince Andrew actually sitting down with the BBC’s signature news show, Newsnight, to talk about the raging scandal over his relationship with the notorious Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his alleged sexual encounters with Virginia Roberts. However, the facts of the matter, such as they were, are not at all what the new Netflix film Scoop is all about.

Instead, much like She Said, The Post, Spotlight and All the President’s Men, the emphasis here is on the reporters, four key woman journalists who incredibly negotiated a sit-down interview with Andrew when such a thing would be unthinkable. They pulled it all off just at a time when facts themselves were on trial and the future of legitimate newsgathering...

It makes sense that Netflix leapt at the chance to adapt Sam McAllister’s “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,” as the story that screenwriter Peter Moffat has pulled from it feels like nothing so much as an episode from season eight or nine of “The Crown” — the most compelling thing about this film might be the case it makes in support of the streamer’s decision to end that series after season six.

Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. The biggest scoop of the century is pinning the British royal family to a sex trafficking scandal, as relived in Netflix film “Scoop.”

The feature, directed by Philip Martin and based on former “Newsnight” producer Sam McAlister’s memoir “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview,” stars Gillian Anderson as BBC anchor Emily Maitlis, who infamously interviewed a disgraced Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein in 2019.

“Scoop” is written by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil, with Billie Piper starring as producer/author McAlister. Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai co-star.

The film debuts on Netflix, following the conclusion of royal family drama “The Crown” in 2023. To note, “Scoop” lead star Anderson appeared on “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher.

The film depicts the shocking BBC Newsnight interview, which took place in 2019 and resulted in a PR nightmare for Buckingham Palace.

During the interview, Prince Andrew was asked about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and alleged sexual assault against a young woman. Prince Andrew’s alibi was memorably being at a Pizza Express in Woking during the alleged incident.

On Feb. 12, 2024, Netflix released a short clip of Scoop in the form of a teaser trailer (via YouTube). The 70-second video started with Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, the journalist who interviewed the Duke of York for BBC’s Newsnight in November 2019.

While footage leading up to the interview flashed across the screen, a voice could be heard saying: “This is the story. The only story. I want it for us. Thursday, 2 p.m., the palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart.”

Netflix gives a look at Gillian Anderson’s transformation into BBC Newsnight‘s Emily Maitlis in the first teaser for its upcoming film Scoop.

Anderson stars alongside Rufus Sewell, Billie Piper and Keely Hawes in the upcoming film, which provides a behind-the-scenes look into how the November 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to be.

“This is the story. The only story. I want it for us,” Maitlis tells the news program’s producer Sam McAlister (Piper) after the women uncover details about the Duke of York’s alleged involvement in Epstein’s scandal. Once the interview is secured, McAlister shares the details in a voiceover: “Thursday, 2 p.m., the palace. Two chairs in the middle of the floor, six feet apart.”

Shortly before her bombshell chat with Prince Andrew, Maitlis nervously touches up her makeup a bathroom at Buckingham Palace alongside McAlister.

Coming a few days after a set of first-look images, Scoop’s trailer shows Gillian Anderson as the notorious Emily Maitlis, whose grilling of Prince Andrew on the BBC led to an enormous humiliation for the prince, who has since settled a sexual assault case filed against him by Jeffrey Epstein-accuser Virginia Giuffre.
