When The Hurt Locker, perhaps the most significant film about the Iraq war, won best picture, it also made a dubious kind of history, posting the worst box office of any previous winner. It had only made $11m at the time – and then several more millions after the Oscar bump – despite the pleadings of critics who insisted, correctly, that director Kathryn Bigelow and her screenwriter, Mark Boal, had made a studiously apolitical thriller about an army bomb squad that spends its days defusing improvised explosive devices. And what could be more exciting than that? How many hit movies and TV shows have been built around the tick-tick-ticking of bombs that are about to go off? Too many to count.

Mark Boal has been an impressive force for a few years now. His producing and writing credits for Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker both brought him early acclaim. And now, he brings his talents to the small screen with a new series called Echo 3. The Apple TV Plus series features an impressive cast, one that includes Michiel Huisman, Luke Evans, and Jessica Ann Collins. If you are at all aware of Mr. Boal’s work, you may want to be prepared for a thrilling opening to this 10 episodic drama. It’s a smart and engaging thriller, and from what I had the chance to witness, things could get very interesting.

Echo 3, a new series from Zero Dark Thirty‘s Mark Boal, follows the story of the disappearance of Amber Chesborough and her brother and husband’s quest to find her while navigating a secret war.

Jessica Ann Collins, who plays Amber, Michiel Huisman, who plays Prince, and Luke Evans, who plays Bambi, recently sat for a conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers about the project.

The actors described their research process for the series.

“For myself, I was just focused on sort of making sure I was primed for the moment of performance,” Collins said.

“I think by having [director] Mark [Boal] around though, Mark wouldn’t allow us to do anything without us having a real picture drawn from his experience and his knowledge, so we didn’t really need to know anything until the day we were actually there and preparing for the production,” Evans revealed. “Mark was there and...

If the apparent success of Amazon’s The Terminal List proved anything, it’s that there’s an audience out there for fast-moving militaristic revenge stories with more interest in a steadily escalating body count than anything deeper.

Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.

Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.

Hulu has released the official trailer for “Welcome to Chippendales,” starring Kumail Nanjiani as Somen “Steve” Banjeree, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the famous male-stripping empire, and quickly learns how unglamorous the live entertainment world can be.

Also starring in the series alongside Nanjiani are Murray Bartlett, Annaleigh Ashford, Dan Stevens, Juliette Lewis with Nicola Peltz appearing in a guest starring role.

The show comes from creator Robert Siegel, whose previous credits include “The Founder” and “The Wrestler.” Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four” director Matt Shakman directs the series. It is inspired by the events portrayed in the book “Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders,” by authors K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca.
