A star-studded movie musical about the childhood of Pharrell Williams has been permanently shuttered and will not see release in any capacity, Variety can report exclusively.
The project in question is “Golden,” originally titled “Atlantis,” and was directed by Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”). It was set for wide theatrical release from Universal Pictures on May 5, though sources said that date was pushed internally last year. It boasts a heavyweight cast of chart toppers and an Oscar winner, including: Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak and Jaboukie Young-White.
Universal set up and financed the effort as part of their longstanding creative partnership with Williams (who is notably a composer and performer for the blockbuster “Despicable Me” franchise). Multiple sources told Variety that the project was shut down after unanimous agreement from producers and Gondry...

Rihanna goes blue as Smurfette in the new trailer for the upcoming Smurfs movie, in which she not only debuts her new character, but also sings “Don’t Stop the Music” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”
After an introduction from Rihanna, the clip begins with a mash-up of the original Smurfs theme and “Don’t Stop the Music” as the “coolest Smurf in the whole village” dances alongside her buddies. Their idyllic existence gets shattered, however, when Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is kidnapped and Smurfette must lead them into the real world.
A sleepy cover of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” — which gets rudely interrupted by DJ Khaled yelling over it — soundtracks their journey, which results in a somewhat amusing introduction to Papa Smurf’s irascible brother (Nick Offerman) and the Paris Neighborhood Watch Smurfs. Check out the full trailer below.

The trailer for Paramount's Smurfs reboot is now online, giving us a first glimpse of some footage from the animated/live-action hybrid musical.
The teaser begins with a little Superman nod, before we're introduced to the eponymous blue creatures living happily as ever in Smurf Village. When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is captured by the villainous Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) steps up to lead a rescue mission to the real world.
Chris Miller and Matt Landon direct, while Pam Brady wrote the screenplay. The voice cast also features Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Hannah Waddingham, Xolo Maridueña, James Corden, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, and Kurt Russell.
“The DNA in Peyo’s original drawings guide so many creative choices in the film,” Miller said at a presentation at the Annecy Animation Festival last June. “It’s the blueprint for the kind of film I want to make.

Rihanna gives a little intro as the new voice of Smurfette, as well as contributing to the soundtrack of the movie with her cover of “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” formally by Belinda Carlise. Smurfs combines the style of the classic Saturday morning cartoons with more modern 3D animation. Smurf village is devastated when a mysterious force abducts Papa Smurf and it’s up to a small group of ragtag Smurfs to get him back.

It’s been a few years since they last blue up, but the Smurfs are back. Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first full trailer for its upcoming musical film “Smurfs,” which features a starry cast that includes Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette.
Along with starring, Rihanna is producing the Paramount Animation production. She also penned original songs for the film.
“I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out,” Rihanna joked back in 2023 to tease the new film at the annual exhibitor event CinemaCon.
“Smurfs” will touch on questions of identity among the Smurfs. Chris Miller and Matt Landon are the film’s directors, while Pam Brady wrote the screenplay. The voice cast features Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Hannah Waddingham, Xolo Maridueña, James Corden, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Kurt Russell and John Goodman.

Guaranteed to stop the world, even if just for a Smurf-Village Minute, is a Rihanna announcement. Today’s comes in the form of a trailer for a trailer: On X and Instagram, the mogul posted a 17-second clip teasing a (likely) full trailer for Paramount Pictures’ Smurfs. “In my blue era ,” she wrote in the caption with the shifty-eyes and blue heart emojis. In April 2023, she and the producers announced that she was voice-cast as Smurfette in the forthcoming live-action hybrid feature.

Denis Villeneuve’s repeated Oscar snubs are sparking frustration among fans and industry insiders alike. Despite both Dune and Dune: Part Two earning nominations for Best Picture, Villeneuve was overlooked in the Best Director category for both films. His snub is disheartening after he blew away viewers with the breathtaking cinematic scope of the second Dune film.

Villeneuve’s accomplishments with Dune: Part Two warrant much better recognition than its current treatment. He undertook a notoriously challenging book-to-film adaptation, something that even legendary director David Lynch failed at. He also defied the sequel curse by making a second film that surpassed the critically acclaimed original.
Fans find it disheartening that the Academy ignored Denis Villeneuve twice for the Dune films Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in a still from Dune: Part Two | Credits: Warner Bros.

NBCUniversal is bringing programming for its television studios, NBC Entertainment, Bravo and Peacock under one roof as part of a broader restructuring designed to enhance collaboration among its teams and streamline decision making.
The new division, dubbed Universal Television Entertainment Group, will be led by Frances Berwick, Pearlena Igbokwe, Liz Jenkins and Jenny Storms. The executives will report directly to NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios chairman Donna Langley.
Berwick will serve as Bravo and Peacock’s unscripted chairman, where she will continue to oversee first run syndication and unscripted programming across Bravo and Peacock including documentaries, true crime, and tentpoles such as “The Traitors” and “Love Island.”

After weeks of speculation, Donna Langley — who took on the role as chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios after a corporate shuffle in November — unveiled her executive structure on Thursday, while Matt Strauss shared his new setup as the recently named chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group.
As long rumored, under Langley’s division (which has been formed now as “Universal Television Entertainment Group”), Universal Studio Group chairman Pearlena Igbokwe is taking on oversight of NBC Entertainment and Peacock’s scripted programming in addition to her studio duties. Her NBC Entertainment domain will include scripted, unscripted, late-night, live events and specials, as well as all scripted originals for Peacock, on top of her direct reports from Universal Television, UCP, Universal Television Alternative Studio and Universal International Studios.

NBCUniversal’s long-awaited restructure is now official.
Donna Langley, Chairman, NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios and Matt Strauss, Chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group have restructured their teams after their promotions last year.
For Langley, the two biggest pieces are Pearlena Igbokwe becoming Chairman, Television Studios, NBC Entertainment & Peacock Scripted and Frances Berwick, who has been running NBC becoming Chairman, Bravo & Peacock Unscripted.
Igbokwe’s promotion – she will continue to lead Universal Studio Group – is not a surprise given the industry has been chattering about NBCU moving back to a vertically integrated network/studio model for around six months. Igbokwe will now oversee NBC Entertainment, including scripted, unscripted, late-night, live events and specials, as well as all scripted originals for Peacock
Berwick’s role is a little more of a surprise. She will oversee unscripted programming across Bravo and Peacock including documentaries, true crime, and tentpoles such as The Traitors and Love Island...

Denis Villeneuve has once again found himself shut out of the best director race for helming a “Dune” movie, which doesn’t make sense to cast member Josh Brolin. The Oscars failed to nominate Villeneuve for “Dune: Part Two” after similarly shutting him out of the best director category in 2022 for the first “Dune” movie. That film earned 10 Oscar nominations, while the sequel somewhat underperformed by earning just 5 noms this year.
“Just want to say congratulations on the ‘Dune’ best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser on cinematography, for best visual effects, for Patrice [Vermett] on production design and for sound,” Brolin said on his Instagram story. “Apparently, I am going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated. This is just how this thing works. It makes no sense to me. That’s okay. [Editor] Joe Walker and Denis, you deserve it. It’s an amazing film. It was even better than the first one.

Hey girl, Ryan Gosling might be going to a galaxy far, far away. The A-list actor is reportedly in talks to star in the Star Wars movie currently being developed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy has been developing his take on Star Wars since 2022, which is said to be a stand-alone movie that will not be a part of the Skywalker Saga. There’s no confirmation on what time period during which it might be set, which means it could take place anywhere from the earliest days of the Galactic Republic to the aftermath of The Battle of Exegol.
Levy is currently enjoying the success that came from partnering with another Hollywood Ryan, as the Reynolds-starring Deadpool & Wolverine was one of 2024’s biggest success stories, having amassed over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the top R-rated earner of all time.

Ryan Gosling is headed to the great galaxy far, far away.
The three-time Oscar nominee is in negotiations to topline the Star Wars feature project that will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy.
Details on any Star Wars project are harder to acquire than plans for an orbital planet killer, and this one is no exception. Levy has been developing his Star Wars feature since 2022 and Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on films such as This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, has been working on a script for over a year. Levy is also producing the feature via his 21 Laps banner, joining Star Wars stewards Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm.
It is unclear when Levy’s project is set. Star Wars stories have run the gamut of hundreds of years, detailing the goings-on of a galactic republic-turned-dictatorship-turned-rebellion. It’s also unclear if it concerns Jedis and their enemies,...

Director Leigh Whannell gave the classic Universal Monsters a shot of modern life in 2020 with his thrilling new take on "The Invisible Man." In the aftermath of that success, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse set about reinventing another monster in the form of the Wolfman. Originally, Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling ("Barbie") was set to star in "Wolf Man" that had director Cory Finley ("Bad Education") flirting with the director's chair before Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") came on board. Things changed a lot along the way, with Whannell ultimately settling into the director's chair. But why did Gosling drop out?
Gosling is still credited on "Wolf Man" as a producer, for what it's worth. Yet, he doesn't appear on screen. Instead, Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, the ill-fated man who becomes a werewolf. In a recent interview with CinemaBlend timed to the film's release, Whannell explained that the film didn't change a lot once Abbott took over.

On December 17, Sony Pictures announced that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has found its directors in Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. And yes, that news came our way nine months after the threequel was meant to swing into theaters.
Persichetti was part of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse directing team and executive produced Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Thompson, meanwhile, was a production designer on the first movie and graduated to the directing team on the sequel alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers.
Executive producer and writer Chris Miller later explained that the duo had been attached to the movie from the start, though the late announcement did little to ease the minds of fans concerned over just how long it will take to get Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse into theaters.

‘The Flash’ director Andy Muschietti thinks ‘The Flash’ failed because it didn’t “appeal to all four quadrants” of moviegoer demographics. The 51-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2023 DC Comics blockbuster - which starred Ezra Miller as the titular hero - has theorised the superhero flick flopped because it couldn’t attract a wide enough audience.During an appearance on Argentina’s Radio Tu, Muschietti said: “‘The Flash failed’, among all the other reasons because it wasn't a movie that appealed to all four quadrants.“It failed at that.”The ‘It’ director added general audiences “just don’t care about The Flash as a character” as much as other DC heroes like Batman or Superman. He continued: “When you spend $200 million making a movie, Warner [Bros.] wants to bring even your grandmother to the theatres. “And I've found in private conversations that a lot of people just don't care about The Flash as a character.

It’s fitting that Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz’s Los Frikis is about the punk-rock spirit. It’s truly the most punk-rock choice they could’ve made following The Peanut Butter Falcon, their critically acclaimed 2019 indie that starred Dakota Johnson, Shia Labeouf and Zack Gottsagen.
After Peanut Butter Falcon’s profitable theatrical run and awards season contention, Nilson and Schwartz were tempted with all the usual offers from the major studios, but their hearts kept gravitating toward a uniquely challenging story about the Cuban experience in the 1990s. Needless to say, their admirable decision to remain in the independent space was met with a lot of blank stares and head-scratching.

It all started in Havana. For filmmakers Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson — the directorial duo behind 2019’s Shia Labeouf-starring underdog hit “The Peanut Butter Falcon” — their next project came through word of mouth.
Schwartz says his and Nilson’s interest in telling the story of “Los Frikis” originated long before “The Peanut Butter Falcon” had even been released. He recalls meeting a group of Cubans in the country’s capital and falling in love with the Latin American spirit. It was through these friendships with actors and artists in the Cuban community, Schwartz says, that he and Nilson learned the true story of “Los Frikis” — a group of impoverished punk rockers in 1990s Cuba who intentionally injected themselves with HIV as a means of securing food, shelter and freedom in a government-run sanatorium.

Traveling through clandestine airwaves, Kurt Cobain touched down in Havana, Cuba, in the turbulent early 1990s. A time of dire economic hardship for the island nation after the fall of the Soviet Union, the “Special Period” pushed thousands of Cubans to migrate, risking their lives at sea. Those who stayed suffered through great scarcity (the U.S. embargo played its part). The grunge star never visited in person, but via the radios of locals illegally tuning in to stations from the U.S. after Fidel Castro banned rock music. One of those listeners, 18-year-old Gustavo (Eros de la Puente), will later try to cover Nirvana’s iconic song in the vibrant Spanish-language drama “Los Frikis,” from Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, the filmmakers behind the moving buddy movie “The Peanut Butter Falcon.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's status has been up in the air since the movie was delayed, but there have been quite a few updates on the anticipated Sony Marvel project that could point to when the animated film could be ready to be released. The Spider-Verse franchise changed the game for animation, introducing a visual style like no other before it that has led to other projects, such as Netflix's Arcane, following along its lines. With two of the best Spider-Man movies of all time, the animated trilogy was originally scheduled to conclude this year, which did not happen.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse did not make its original March 29th, 2024, release date. The news was announced just a little under two months after the second film in the animated franchise, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, had been released. According to them, they are bringing their best game to the final send-off of the Oscar-winning franchise. Redundant to say that the fans are beyond excited at the prospect of being able to witness the potential masterpiece soon.

Alright, let's do this one last time. In 2018, Sony Pictures Animation released Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse, introducing the world to Brooklyn teen Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and a multiversal array of Spidey pals, changing the game for superhero storytelling — and Hollywood animation — in the process. In 2023, Sony Pictures Animation released Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, reintroduced the world to Miles Morales, a multiversal array of Spidey pals, took the franchise quite literally to whole new dimensions, and changed the game again. And now, per Deadline's reporting, we're learning that Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson — co-directors on Into and Across The Spider-Verse respectively — will be bringing us back into the world of Miles Morales and his Spidey pals once again with Beyond The Spider-Verse.

In cinema, films based on true stories are often considered “safe,” but that couldn’t be further from the case for Los Frikis. Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the Spider-Verse movies), Los Frikis takes its challenging subject matter and infuses it with genuine heart, making it an irresistible crowd-pleaser despite all the odds stacked against it.
Los Frikis Review
Los Frikis tells the story of a group of impoverished punk rockers living in Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union who decide to inject themselves with HIV to allow them to live at a state-sponsored sanitarium for AIDS patients. The film is based on true events that many in America have likely never heard of, but it feels incredibly necessary nevertheless.
For an independent production, Los Frikis is actually a very strong movie from a technical standpoint. The cinematography and set design are very impressive, making...

The "Spider-Verse" movies are revolutionary works of animation, having started a new trend that's allowed other directors and animators to experiment with 3D, using 2D textures, and exploring different stylizations to make movies that don't all look hyper-realistic. They are also just damn good superhero movies that challenged what we think a Spider-Man movie could do, what a superhero movie could do, and even helped perfect the idea of the multiverse on film. They show that animation really is where the superhero genre thrives the most, capturing the elasticity, the dynamic action, and sheer imagination of comic books. And yet it is also a franchise that, despite its massive multiversal spectacle, isn't afraid to slow down and give space to quiet moments, like having two characters share a heart-to-heart while looking at the sunset.
Production on movies like these is massive and overwhelming. The character of Spider-Punk took animators three years to make.

Sony Pictures has just announced that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has found its directors in Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. And yes, this news comes our way nine months after the threequel was meant to swing into theaters.
Given their respective roles in shaping this animated franchise, this is quite the dream team for the movie. While it's possible they've been working on Beyond the Spider-Verse for longer than we've been made aware, even a 2026 release date feels optimistic at this stage.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has caught a pair of directors in its web. Spider-Verse vets Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will share duties on the third chapter in the trilogy, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Persichetti was among the co-directors of the 2018 Oscar-winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and worked as an executive producer on 2022’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Thompson was production designer on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and eventually joined Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers as directors on the film, which earned $690.5 million globally. The animated films, which voice star Shameik Moore as Spider-Man/Miles Morales, have been praised for their visual inventiveness and helped raise the bar for superhero films.

Jamie Lee Curtis is looking likely to take over from the late Angela Lansbury in a new take on Murder, She Wrote. More here.
We’ve known for over a year now that a film version of the beloved 1980s TV series, Murder, She Wrote is heading our way courtesy of the writing team behind 2023’s Dumb Money.
The writers of the film, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, revealed in September of that year that they were teaming with producer Amy Pascal to work on an adaptation of Murder, She Wrote, the classic 1980s US murder mystery show that made the late Angela Lansbury into a beloved star.
Of course, that announcement came at the very tail-end of the Hollywood writers’ strikes so just how quickly things got up and running, we can only guess, but accoring to Deadline, things are definitely moving. What’s more with none other...

If you are a traditional linear TV show (perhaps one of the most traditional), how do you maintain relevance in a world where the cool, new things are increasingly watched in short bites on iPhones?
It turns out, even in a popular culture dominated by TikTok and Instagram, nostalgia still clicks.
When Lindsay Lohan appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon back in March, she reprised her characters “Hallie” and “Annie” from the 1998 film The Parent Trap, in a sketch with Fallon. The sketch wasn’t part of the show, but was instead distributed on the program’s social channels, including TikTok and Instagram. It has since been viewed 43 million times.
It was so successful that when Lohan returned just a few weeks ago, she participated in another digital-only sketch, one that references the infamous “Jingle Bell Rock” scene in her 2004 film Mean Girls. It has already garnered more than 15 million views.

The Spider-Verse films have become major hits in animated superhero movies. The first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was a big success, and its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, broke several records.
Released as Sony Pictures Animation’s first global film since The Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019, Across the Spider-Verse earned $690.5 million worldwide, making it Sony’s highest-grossing movie and the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023.
It also won Best Animated Film at the National Board of Review and was named one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute.
We’ve known that Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third movie in the series, was in the works since December 2023. Chris Miller and Phil Lord shared an update at that time, confirming that the team is working hard on the movie.

The Spider-Verse franchise has become one of the standout animated superhero projects in recent years. The first film, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,’ was a major success, and its sequel, ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ exceeded expectations by setting multiple records.
This film marked Sony Pictures Animation’s first global release since ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ in 2019. It received rave reviews and earned $690.5 million worldwide, surpassing the original movie and becoming the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023.
It also became the studio’s highest-grossing film ever and won the Best Animated Film award at the National Board of Review. Furthermore, the American Film Institute included it in its top 10 films of 2023.
We knew that ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ the third installment in the franchise, was in development since Chris Miller and Phil Lord gave us an update back in December of 2023 claiming that the team is working on the movie full steam.

According to a new report, Kraven The Hunter will be the last in Sony’s series of Spider-Man spin-off movies, none of which featured Spider-Man.
After six films, lots of cash and a boatload of unfulfilled promises, Sony is (for the time being a least) said to be wrapping up its series of interconnected Spider-Man films. The upcoming Kraven The Hunter will mark the sixth and final film in the series, ending a mini-cinematic universe that began in 2018 with Ruben Fleischer’s Venom and continued through 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, 2022’s Morbius, and this year’s Madame Web and Venom: The Last Dance.
It’s not like Sony are short on Spider-Men these days either. Multiverse storytelling has made, well, an endless amount of them available to the studio, including three beloved cinematic versions that could have been used if Sony didn’t want to use Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.

Broadway musical Swept Away will extend its run through Dec. 29, the producers announced Tuesday, citing a surge in ticket sales following the initial announcement that the show would close this week.
Featuring a score by the Avett Brothers, Swept Away initially announced that it would close after only 32 regular performances, setting its final day for Dec. 15. In an announcement onstage following Tuesday’s Dec. 11 show, actor Stark Sands announced the run would extend through to the end of the month following demand for tickets.
“The story we tell is about the will to survive against incredible odds,” Sands told the crowd. “Last week it was announced that Swept Away would be closing and then, something happened. We came to work the next day, and we walked out to a completely sold-out house. And then the next day it happened again and then it happened again…I’ve never seen it...
