- Got her "start" in the music business as the housekeeper for songwriter Carole King. She would sing as she worked in King's apartment, and King was impressed with her voice. King brought her to producer Don Kirshner at Dimension Records, who auditioned her and then commissioned King to write a song for her. The result was the #1 hit "The Loco-Motion".
- Her grave was adorned with a simple white cross, but in July 2008 she got a new gravestone that bears the image of a locomotive (for her song "loco-motion") and the epitaph: "Singing with the Angels".
- Was living in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York when he music career took off.
