Two and a half years have gone by since we heard that genre regular Samara Weaving was starring in the comedic thriller Borderline, which was filming in Vancouver with The Babysitter: Killer Queen and Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden (who happens to be married to Weaving) at the helm, making his feature directorial debut. Now, the first poster for Borderline has made its way online and can be seen at the bottom of this article. A release date for the film hasn’t been officially announced, but some sites are claiming that it will be getting a limited theatrical release on March 14th.

Warden’s Borderline script, which was once featured on the Black List, centers on a helplessly romantic sociopath who escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of a ’90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.

The California Film Commission has approved 10 film and television productions for the state’s film and TV tax credit, including Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington’s “Imperfect Women” and the second season of the Apple TV+ series “Bad Monkey,” which is relocating from Florida.

The Cfc will allocate a combined $108.6 million in tax credits to the 10 productions, which it estimates will generate $509 million in qualified state expenditures, create 3,583 cast and crew jobs, and invest $276 million in below-the-line wages.

“We are working hard to keep productions filming in California,” said Colleen Bell, Director of the California Film Commission. “These tax credits help us keep jobs here in our state and drive economic growth, but the impact goes beyond the entertainment industry – it supports families, local businesses, and communities statewide.”

Another film approved for incentives is 20th Century Studios’ “Whalefall,” which is written and directed by Brian Duffield and co-written by Daniel Kraus.

A common refrain amongst entertainment industry types is that it's a miracle any movie gets made. There are so many moving parts to any production, from ensuring the script has a story audiences will want to see to managing a crew of hundreds to get that story onto film. The Copeland Brothers have found a new home.

Chris and Justin Copeland, who have worked on “Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts,” “Batman: The Killing Joke” and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” cartoon, have joined stop-motion studio Laika to develop animated feature projects. Travis Knight, president and CEO of Laika, made the announcement.

The Copeland Brothers, as they are collectively known, have been working for the past five years on feature and series projects for DreamWorks Animation. The feature they were working on for DreamWorks is not going forward; hence their pivot to Laika, TheWrap has learned. However, a short film that they were working on for the studio is coming soon.

Occasionally, an incredible sci-fi film comes along, and it is always surprising when a film of such caliber never receives a sequel. Sometimes, it feels as though there are still stories left to tell. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.

When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.

The Setup

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) will next be seen in the upcoming thriller Borderline, and a couple first-look images from the film have made their way online this week.

Eric Dane and Ray Nicholson also star in director Jimmy Warden‘s (writer: Cocaine Bear) movie. Warden wrote the film, and will be making his directorial debut.

In Borderline, described as a violent comedy-thriller, “A bodyguard protects a pop superstar and her athlete boyfriend from a determined stalker in 1990s Los Angeles.”

Here’s the full official synopsis: “The writer of Cocaine Bear is back with another twisted tale. A star-obsessed sociopath, and his fellow inmates, escape from a mental institution and invade the home of his ‘90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.”

The cast also includes Alba Baptista and Jimmie Fails.

Exclusive: A24 and Star Thrower Entertainment have partnered on director David Freyne’s romantic comedy Eternity with Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner in talks to star. Freyne will direct the pic, with Teller and Olsen exec producing.

A24 will finance and produce, with Oscar-nominated producers Trevor White and Tim White under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, which is best known for producing The Post and King Richard. Pat Cunnane wrote the script, which appeared on the 2022 Black List.

Brian Duffield is on board to co-write and direct the movie adaptation of Kraus’ novel, Deadline reports this afternoon.

20th Century Studios has snapped up the distribution rights to the Imagine Entertainment film, and Deadline additionally notes that Kraus will co-write the screenplay with Duffield.

The book is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours.

The storyline follows “a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.
