The last time TV audiences saw Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott – detective fiction’s reigning will-they-won’t-they king and queen – they were hugging outside a fancy perfume shop. The private investigators had solved Troubled Blood’s cold case, exposed a serial killer, and had time left over for some belated birthday shopping for the newly divorced Robin.
An almost-kiss between them turned into a heartfelt hug and Strike’s declaration that Robin was his best friend, leaving them still tantalisingly apart but ready for their next adventure.
That next adventure is now on its way, confirms Deadline and the BBC. Filming is currently underway on The Ink Black Heart, with Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger back in the lead roles, and Tom Edge back as the show’s screenwriter and creator.

Warning: This review contains spoilers.
This is more like it! No, episode two of Troubled Blood wasn’t any more generous with the Robin/Strike underpants progress, but it was several times more exciting than the opener by dint of having something happen in the present day. Double points for that thing being Holliday Grainger’s Robin wearing a disguise and doing a fake accent (tick that off your Strike bingo card).
It wasn’t just one fake accent this episode, but two. First there was the welcome return of fictional toff Venetia Hall, then there was a cockney teenager in a baseball cap who infiltrated a nursing home with a chorus of innits and awrights. Robin’s Mr Ben selection of improv personas has always been one of Strike’s highlights, and this was no different. The scene in which the odious Luca Ricci was sniffing around our girl had tension,...

Strike: Troubled Blood really is an extraordinarily fine crime drama, where a range of exceptional talents come together to create something that is actually greater than the sum of its very formidable parts. That is something rare and to be cherished. And indeed watched, and I can unreservedly commend this four-parter as a highlight of your festive viewing. It starts brilliantly, but gets better, and there are some surprising and compelling star performances to come.
It’s the latest adaptation, by Tom Edge, of the Strike detective works of Jk Rowling, and probably the best. Tom Burke is once again in the title role of Cormoran Strike, the gruff but clever private investigator. Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. And his affection and respect for his resourceful business partner, Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) always threatens, or promises,...

While fans await official confirmation from Mammoth Productions, the planets appear to be coming into alignment for filming to start on the ninth series of ITV crime drama Endeavour, starring Shaun Evans and Roger Allam.
Series eight concluded on ITV in September 2021 with a touching tribute to Inspector Morse actor John Thaw, and some uplifting words from Allam’s Fred Thursday. Having reached its 33rd episode (the same number of Morse stories filmed), many predicted eight would be Endeavour’s final series, though Allam suggested the drama would have “a few more to wrap things up”. Not least to wrap up the ongoing mystery of how and why his character has disappeared from Morse’s life by the time of the John Thaw incarnation.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group has hired former MGM TV executive Charles Farmer to the newly created role of CEO.
The move and the simultaneously announced naming of Really Useful’s David Chance to the role of Non-Executive Chairman are designed, the company said, to increase the reach and impact of Lloyd Webber’s work in TV, film, and other platforms.
“The Covid-19 pandemic forced us all to look for new ways to develop, produce and share our work,” Lloyd Webber said in a statement. “While I am thrilled to see live theatre firmly back on its feet, we also have major ambitions in the worlds of TV, film, the metaverse and beyond. I am delighted to have Charlie and David on board to help us achieve new and exciting things.”

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we present Simon Heath, World Productions CEO and exec producer of Line of Duty, the biggest UK TV drama of the decade.
Line of Duty, Vigil and The Pembrokeshire Murders. The three most-watched dramas in the UK last year were all united by one common denominator: World Productions.
By World’s own standards, the ITV Studios-backed drama powerhouse had a phenomenal year during what was a difficult 12 months for the industry, with Covid never far from the mind and a highly-publicized skills crisis making TV production trickier than ever.
“You couldn’t really ask for more than having the biggest shows on BBC1 and ITV,” Heath tells Deadline during a rare in-person interview at his Central London offices, although...

Warning: contains major spoilers for You Don’t Know Me, all episodes of which are available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
You Don’t Know Me is a story told from a perspective rarely heard from at any length: that of a young Black man being tried for murder in the UK. In the final days of his trial, the defendant (nameless and known only in Imran Mahmood’s novel and Tom Edge’s script as ‘Hero’) dismisses his barrister and chooses to deliver the defence’s closing speech to the jury himself. A four-episode monologue told in flashback follows. It’s an engaging and emotional torrent of narrative that acts as a dramatic redress of the lawyer-advised ‘no comment’ silence that TV drama teaches us to expect from such characters in such a situation. Led by a powerhouse performance from lead Samuel Adewunmi, You Don’t Know Me is a murder...

Where to Watch ‘Lovesick’: Netflix (after its first season originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK)
One of the most satisfying feelings from a TV rewatch is realizing how much of what makes a show great is right there at the start. While the show that became “Lovesick” definitely evolved over its three seasons, the first episode carries a lot of its effortless charm.
Up top, there’s the deceptively simple premise: After finding out he has an Sti, Dylan (Johnny Flynn) now faces the prospect of reaching out to all the women he’s slept with. Each episode uses one of Dylan’s past encounters (whether circumstantial one-night stands or the source of more long-term heartbreak) as a way to show his shared adventures with best mates Evie (Antonia Thomas) and Luke (Daniel Ings).
So that “Lovesick” opening, which centers on...

In her entertaining Mipcom fresh content presentation on Tuesday, Virginia Mouseler, CEO and co-founder of the Geneva-based TV think tank The Wit, put the focus on hit new shows powered by a cast of angry women.
“‘The Squid Game’ inspired our theme for today, which is fiction against domination,” she said. “In our selection, it will be mostly women against the domination of men. The domination of the system.”
Mouseler’s selection of fresh TV began with the BBC’s crime thriller “Vigil,” which revolves around a lesbian cop sent to investigate a murder on a submarine. “The deeper you go, the darker it gets,” runs the tag line.
“What I thought was interesting was the evolution of the female cop character,” she said. “She’s a lesbian and she’s sent to a men’s world and has to deal with her own vulnerability.”

The creator of BBC1’s smash submarine thriller Vigil has teased a second season just a day after the show’s debut episode posted a three-year UK ratings high.
Tom Edge, who has penned episodes of The Crown, told Shrine Podcasts‘ Vigil: The Interview special that he is “busily working away” on series two of Line of Duty producer World Productions’ thriller, which stars Gentleman Jack’s Suranne Jones.
Edge said the production team “started talking a while back about what else we might want to do” with the show, insisting it “can’t be a photocopy of what we did last time.”
Edge’s comments came a day after the first episode of Vigil consolidated to become the most-watched UK show for more than three years, with 13.4 million viewers watching over the past 30 days.

This Strike: Lethal White review contains spoilers.
Put your hand up if the conclusion to Lethal White’s investigation left you nonplussed and the killer revelation felt by-the-by. Now put your other hand up if that’s basically fine because you couldn’t give a McVitie’s fig roll who murdered Jasper Chiswell, or why, or by what means.
Finally, take both hands down, make loose fists and draw a scruffy Cornish beard on one and the face of an English rose on the other, then smoosh them together while making kissy noises. Until the Troubled Blood adaptation arrives, that’s as good as we’re going to get.
There were plenty of high points in the Lethal White finale. There was the pained expression on Robin’s face as she watched Strike and Charlotte walk away while assuring her mum on the other end of the phone that yes,...

As most industry folk are unable or unwilling to travel for the present, Variety asked its team of international correspondents to highlight a selection of key scripted shows from around the world. The picks — all set to drop this summer or fall — are designed to appeal to those of an adventurous disposition.
From the U.K. come three shows: a paranormal comedy-drama from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg; a comedy about “a bad person who’s a good mother” from Canadian-born Katherine Ryan; and a submarine-set murder mystery, written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Tom Edge.
Another series about a murder that took place on a submarine, this time based on a grisly real crime, looks at the investigation in Denmark into the
murder of journalist Kim Wall.
From France comes a playful show about a cross-dressing detective, set in Paris during the Jazz Age, from the producers of “Call My Agent!...

Fresh off her Independent Spirit and BAFTA Awards in the past week, Renee Zellweger became a two-time Oscar winner tonight, taking home the Best Actress prize for her portrayal of Judy Garland in musical biopic Judy. Zellweger previously won in the Supporting Actress category for 2003’s Cold Mountain. Her two other nominations were for Chicago and Bridget Jones’s Diary.
For Judy, Zellweger transformed herself into Garland at a time when the legendary actress/singer was struggling with addiction, money woes and her own fading star. Set in winter 1968, the story takes place 30 years after Garland played the iconic role of Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz. When she arrives in Swinging London to prepare for a sell-out run at The Talk of the Town, she battles with management, finds new love and reminisces with friends and adoring fans. Director Rupert Goold's Judy, a biopic of the famed American actress, singer and dancer Judy Garland, is based on the play "End Of The Rainbow" by playwright Peter Quilter. It gives us an insight into the last few months of the singer's life.
The film concentrates mainly on the last few months of 1968, when the legendary Judy Garland travelled to London for a series of sold-out stage performances, where she is shown to be in a financial mess, and addicted to drugs and alcohol. Battling a tough, lonely life, she is trying to reunite with her kids. It is her financial desperation that leads her to accept an offer for a series of concerts in London.
Laid in a non-linear narrative, the film zips through the singer's past and present in a fluid manner, with not much of a plot. The film oft flashbacks to one of her biggest triumphs,...

Frontrunner Zellweger is on winning streak, taking home the drama Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG awards. It’s hers to lose.
Making a splash is multi-talented British singer-actress Cynthia Erivo (“Widows”) who stars in the title role of abolitionist Harriet Tubman in Kasi Lemmons’ biographical drama, “Harriet,” a fall hit for Focus Features. Erivo landed Critics Choice, Globe and SAG nominations but was surprisingly overlooked by BAFTA.

Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America, East have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting during 2019. Following up two big Golden Globes wins, rising awards contender “1917” landed an Original Screenplay nomination for Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, along with nods for comedies “Knives Out,” “Booksmart,” and Globes-winner “Parasite,” as well as Noah Baumbach’s drama “Marriage Story.”
Baumbach’s partner, writer-director Greta Gerwig, landed a nomination for Adapted Screenplay for “Little Women.” Shockingly omitted was Anthony McCarten’s script for Netflix’s “The Two Popes,” which may turn up on Oscar nominations morning in the less competitive Adapted category; the WGA considered it as Original because McCarten’s play on which it was based had not been produced when the script was written.
And documentarian Alex Gibney scored not one but two nominations, for “Citizen K” as well as “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.
