Rooted in the spirit of the desert and deeply connected to Afro-futurist culture, her work spans fantasy, science fiction, and ancestral-themed horror, reimagining the narratives of the Black diaspora with power and purpose.
Her journey has led her to platforms such as Showtime, HBO, Netflix, CBS, and BET, where her storytelling continues to expand the landscape of film and television. Malakai's short films have captivated audiences at prestigious festivals including Sundance, ABFF, PAFF, and Cannes-challenging conventions of Black womanhood and reframing diasporic narratives through bold and transformative perspectives.
As the founder of Made In Her Image (MIHI), Malakai is dedicated to empowering young creators of color, forging equitable pathways through partnerships with industry leaders such as A24, Disney, and Panavision. Since 2018, MIHI has impacted over 2,000 young women and over 150,000 community members, fostering the next generation of visionary storytellers.
