15 June 1938 - Evening. Paris, between the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Hitler. A city where Mathieu lives - and Marcelle exists.

16 June 1938 - Afternoon. Mathieu is trying to arrange an abortion for his mistress Marcelle, and needs money quickly. He takes Ivich to an art exhibition and kisses her for the first time.

17 June 1938 - Morning. Ivich and Mathieu have deliberately cut their hands, thereby achieving a bond. They have arranged to meet at ten o'clock, but before then Mathieu has to give Brunet an answer.

June 1938 - Evening. Ivich has failed her examinations and Mathieu has failed to persuade her to stay in Paris. He has also just stolen money for an abortion and given it to Marcelle.

15th June 1940. The Germans have occupied Paris, Mathieu is in the army waiting for the surrender, Gomez is in America looking for a job and Daniel is in Paris alone with his cats.

15th June 1940 - Afternoon - The Defeated. Mathieu is with his unit waiting for orders. Boris and Ivich meet up and he then he returns to Lola.

16th June 1940. Daniel and Phillipe meet by the Seine as Phillipe contemplates suicide. Mathieu and his army companion take a walk with the girl from the Post Office as they wait for their fate now that the war is over.

17th June 1940 Night. Mathieu and his friend have decided to join the Chasseurs and fight. Brunet arrives tired and ready to surrender after a week of fighting. In the morning the Germans arrive.

Mathieu spends the night with beautiful Irene and returns to his room to find Ivich waiting for him in anticipation of love.

Mathieu boards a train and Boris gets a haircut in preparation for war while Ivich gets drunk with old flame Claude.

16 June 1938 - Evening. Mathieu has not been able to borrow the money he needs. He has arranged to meet Ivich and Boris to hear Lola sing. Daniel visits Marcelle.

17 June 1938 - Afternoon Ivich has rejected Mathieu and Boris has left Lola. Daniel has told Marcelle that Mathieu still loves her; however, Mathieu is still trying to borrow the money for an abortion.

As World War 2 draws near, Daniel has achieved his ambition of unhappiness by marrying the pregnant Marcelle and Mathieu lusts after his sister in law.
