The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and the Sea will begin filming later this year. Here are the details.
When Russell T Davies came back to Doctor Who, one of the first things he mentioned was the idea of building a Whoniverse, where Doctor Who and associated spin-offs would all come under one banner.
The Whoniverse launched on iPlayer last year, and it included all surviving episodes of Classic Who and every episode of New Who, plus all the spin-offs like Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and even K-9 and Company. Every episode of Confidential is available to watch, along with a wealth of material from the BBC archive. Tales of the Tardis was a lovely treat too.
But what Doctor Who fans have been wondering ever since Davies returned was when he would launch a new spin-off. Rumours have been rife for months,...

Richard Franklin, better known for his portrayal of Captain Mike Yates during Jon Pertwee’s run of Doctor Who, has died at 87.
The actor’s death Monday morning was confirmed by Liam Rudden, a friend of Franklin’s who ran his social media. Rudden shared in a family statement that the late actor had “died in his sleep after fighting long term illness.”
“We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling,” the statement continues. “He is also well remembered outside the family for his long running career in TV and Theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages. This gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.”
Rudden continued to share tributes on Franklin’s X page, sharing that Franklin would “have loved that he is trending” and writing, “One thing I loved about...

We haven’t come to re-litigate the fiery ending of “Game of Thrones,” in which Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen rides in on her dragon and torches King’s Landing, behaving tyrannically in ways antithetical to the ethical character built scale by scale over the previous eight seasons. The Mother of Dragons comes to a shocking and lethal end, but House Targaryen still has narrative juice to be squeezed. The highly-anticipated prequel series “House of the Dragon,” based on George R. R. Martin’s “Fire and Blood,” is set two centuries prior, when another battle of succession roils the powerful, incestuous, platinum-haired dragon-keepers.
“House of the Dragon,” or “Meet the Targaryens,” has the girl power backbeat that drove previous characters like Daenerys, Arya Stark and Ygritte. Spunky heir Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen has the dragon-riding goods and inner fire to rule. However, in this patriarchal hierarchy, lacking a winkle weakens her...

Simon Pegg earned the wrath of the Dark Side of the Force when he said that “Star Wars” fans are currently pop culture’s “most toxic” fanbase – and are far worse than what he sees from “Star Trek” fans, in particular.
Stopping by Sirius Xm’s “Jim and Sam” show with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts last week, Pegg was asked which of the different franchise fan bases between “Star Wars,” “Star Trek” and “Dr. Who” have been the most toxic to deal with.
“As someone who was kicked off about the prequels when they came out, the Star Wars fan base seems to be the most toxic at the moment. I’m probably being very controversial to say that,” the actor said.

United Talent Agency has acquired the legacy UK literary and talent agency Curtis Brown Group, UTA announced Monday.
Curtis Brown Group, which was founded in 1899, will continue to operate under its current name and management, including CEO Jonny Geller (pictured above at center). But the deal expands UTA’s international footprint and this structure will allow both Curtis Brown Group and UTA to continue their longstanding relationships with other agency partners in the UK and U.S.
Curtis Brown has more than 240 employees and is expected to continue to grow as a result of this deal. No staffing reductions are anticipated due to this transaction. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

UTA has acquired the Curtis Brown Group, the UK literary and talent agency that reps authors including Margaret Atwood, the literary estates of Ian Fleming and others as well as a roster of film and TV clients.
The deal follows the 2020 combination of Curtis Brown and former rival Markham Froggatt and Irwin. Previously, the firm had grown through the acquisitions of Tavistock Wood in 2018, Ed Victor in 2017 and C&w in 2013.
The companies have had a history of working together on projects involving Damian Lewis, Lily James, Alicia Vikander and Bel Powley, as well as rising star Ncuti Gatwa, just named by the BBC as the next Dr. Who. They also share representation of screenwriters including David Farr, Georgia Pritchett, and Tony Roche. Curtis Brown shares with other agencies the representation of clients including Robert Pattinson.

Here's our spoiler-free look at the Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time...
This review is spoiler-free. It talks about, at most, stuff that's been revealed in promo photos, but not more than that.
Twice Upon A Time
Really rather special, this one. Appreciating that pretty much everyone knows where Steven Moffat’s final Doctor Who story – Twice Upon A Time – has to ultimately end (an ending that was sliced off the press preview), the journey the story takes is really quite something.
It kicks off, of all things, with the kind of recap that only Doctor Who could get away with, before resuming where things were left at the end The Doctor Falls. Two Doctors – David Bradley as the first Doctor, Peter Capaldi as the incumbent – holding off their own regeneration. Neither willing to succumb to the change and uncertainty that lies ahead.

Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a treat for the fans, but the episode due to air in just under two weeks now is a real must-see. Not only will it feature Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah as the Twelfth Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker making her debut as No. 13 by the end of the episode, but it will also see the return of the First Doctor. That’s three Doctors for the price of one!
Taking over the part of the original Time Lord is David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter), who already has some experience with the role as he previously played First Doctor actor William Hartnell in the 2013 biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. His impersonation of Hartnell impressed fans so much, in fact, that he was a natural choice to play the Doctor for real in the special. However, it’s not something that he ever expected.

Is there a doctor in the house? Oh, all of you are. BBC America just dropped the trailer for this year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time,” which will serve as the farewell to Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi. And yeah, yeah, yeah — it’ll get to Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker. Before that ultimate regeneration, however, the First Doctor comes back into our lives circa David Bradley. (The original actor who played the First Doctor, William Hartnell, died in 1975. Hartnell’s initial replacement, Richard Hurndall, passed away in 1984.) Rounding out the annual “Doctor Who” holiday special are Pearl Mackie.

The Tardis is as integral to the story of Doctor Who as the Time Lord himself. In fact, you could argue that it’s almost another character, since it’s been a constant throughout the show’s 54 year history, but changes with each new incarnation of The Doctor. The magical police box – which is bigger on the inside than the outside and can travel through time and space – has been the backdrop for some of the most memorable moments from the BBC’s flagship drama series, but now, eagle-eyed fans have spotted something that might provide an important visual clue for the plot of the upcoming Christmas Special.
In a still picture from the episode – which features David Bradley as The First Doctor, standing at the control panel of the Tardis – many have observed that the wall behind him does not actually match the Tardis interior of The First Doctor...

After the initial furore over Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor back in July subsided, most seemed to be on board – or, at least, have come to terms – with the decision to make the Time Lord a woman. That said, one former Doctor Who star – in fact, arguably the most iconic Doctor Who star of them all – has revealed that he would have preferred a different actress to take the part.
The Fourth Doctor himself, Tom Baker, was speaking with GQ when the topic of the new Doctor inevitably came up. First, let’s clarify that Baker is totally on board with Whittaker’s casting, as he mentioned that he was “thrilled” with the decision and is sure she’ll be “marvellous.”
“I was thrilled! So long as the girl comes over as an alien, a benevolent alien, she’ll be marvellous. I wish the girl the very greatest of luck.

Times change, and Doctor Who changes with them – literally. What began as a curious science fiction television show for the BBC in 1963 has now evolved into an ever-expanding franchise – encompassing a variety of spinoff series, comic books, radio dramas, novelizations, non-fiction books, video games, and an endless stream of merchandise. While it was originally created by Sydney Newman, C.E Webber, and Donald Wilson, a variety of creative minds have left their mark on the property, and the latest passing of that baton is set to bring the biggest changes of all.
Its original run – iconic theme tune and all – began on November 23rd, 1963, and continued until 1989. A TV movie followed in 1996, then the Tardis fell silent, until Russell T. Davies fired it up again in 2005. Since that reboot, Doctor Who has remained a fixture on the screens of fans around the world and shows no signs of fading from view.

After flying off with her space puddle girlfriend to see the universe (just roll with it) at the end of season 10, it looked like we’d seen the last of the Doctor’s latest companion, Bill Potts. It was a welcome surprise, then, when the Christmas special trailer announced that Pearl Mackie would be returning one last time for Peter Capaldi’s final hour on Doctor Who.
However, it was still shrouded in mystery exactly what Bill’s role in the episode would be. Was she due to make a quick cameo? Or would she stick around for the whole outing? Unfortunately, we still don’t have an answer, but it would seem that she’ll be fairly involved, as a new motion poster for the special has dropped and it features Mackie’s character along with the two Doctors.
There’s nothing here that’ll stop the presses, but...

A salute to The Omega Factor, a seminal 1970s sci-fi TV series that paved the way for many more to follow...
One of the funny quirks about Scotland is that everyone can name a Scots actor, but very few can name famous Scottish TV shows. Beyond the standard native fare of cop shows and comedies, Scotland’s televisual output is well below its literary or film standing.
Of course, there’s Take The High Road (And if you get that reference, dear reader, you can mournfully reflect that you’re as old as me). But there are a few surprising gems beyond the cliched obsession with the Jacobites and Highland allure (ahem, Outlander).
In 1979, and all too briefly, The Omega Factor was BBC Scotland’s paranormal, Edinburgh-set drama. The series, as was so typical of (nearly) every show now considered iconic for the era, only ran for...

Jane wants to have a chat about Christmas, kindness, and malfunctioning skirt...
Cards on the table - I’m a Bah Humbug kind of person. Christmas comes but once a year for which I am thankful. This year it appears to be having a four month gestation period. The slush factor kicks in right about the time The X Factor raises its many hydra-ed head. And with it comes the ants of anxiety.
I can’t watch those adverts and think my life’s problems will be solved with a gastric bellyache of pudding and excess. It isn’t going to be solved with oversized pyjamas with kittens on them. Or by drinking the smorgasbord of unholy beverages that manifest as actual Christmas spirit (chocolate liqueur anyone?). Yeah, there’s the Doctor Who Christmas special but I’m usually too far gone in wine by air time...

Have you heard? David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning to their iconic Doctor Who roles as the Tenth Doctor and his beloved Rose Tyler! Oh, we should probably clarify that we’re talking about a new boxset of audio dramas, rather than a comeback on the small screen. But hey, that’s still cool, right? You bet your sweet sonic screwdriver it is.
The Tenth Doctor Adventures Vol. 2 is the second release to see Tennant reprise the role that he bowed out of on TV back on New Year’s Day 2010, when he regenerated into Matt Smith. In the first boxset, he was joined by Catherine Tate, who starred opposite him as Donna Noble in the 2008 series. That was a real treat, but a reunion for the Doctor and Rose is what a lot of fans were really hoping for, as few Doctor-companion pairings before or since have managed...

When Doctor Who premiered in 1963, the BBC probably didn’t anticipate it becoming a worldwide phenomenon and the longest-running science-fiction show in history. If they did, the network would have likely not purged their archives of Doctor Who episodes in the ’70s, resulting in many serials from the First and Second Doctor’s runs to become lost to oblivion. We’ve got new Doctor Who coming up in the form of this December’s Christmas special and Jodie Whittaker’s season 11 that’s currently in production, but we’re also getting some new old Doctor Who, as well. That’s because an abandoned story from 1979, which has gained legendary status over the years, is finally being completed using animation.
Titled “Shada,” the six-part storyline was set to be the third and final Doctor Who episode from iconic sci-fi scribe Douglas Adams (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). However, due to strike action at the BBC, production was interrupted halfway through and never resumed.
Nearly forty years later, though, the cast of the story have been reunited and chief among them is Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor himself who played the role from 1974-1981. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, it’s also been revealed that the 87-year-old actor...

The best fan-made web-series has come to an end. To Boldly Go: Part 2 was released this week and it not only concludes the show in style, it also brings the 5-year mission of the Starship enterprise to a solid, entertaining end.
It was a bittersweet moment watching the final episode of Star Trek Continues. On one had, it was great to see this excellent series get wrapped up so well, but it was also sad to realize that there won’t be any further episodes. The purpose of the show was bridge the gap between the end of the classic 1966-69 TV series (“Turnabout Intruder” was the final original series episode) and big screen cinematic adventures, which it does very well. It was a great ride, while it lasted.
Vic Mignogna, the executive producer/writer, who portrays Captain Kirk on the show, explains what he wanted to accomplish with this last episode.

It would have been perfectly understandable for Andy Weir to rest on his laurels or take a victory lap after the success of The Martian, the rare novel that strikes lightning in a bottle on both a critical and commercial level. To top it off, the movie adaptation of the book, starring Matt Damon as stranded astronaut Mark Watney, was a monster hit, winning two Golden Globes and giving Weir even more cachet.
But writers write, and before long, Weir found himself back at the computer screen, ready to dive into another science-fiction yarn. And he did so without any expectations hanging over his head.
“I didn’t set out to top The Martian,” Weir tells Et. “A success like that is something a writer will get once in his whole career, if he’s lucky. I know that there’s a good chance that I could write 20 more books and people will say The Martian is the one...

Doctor Who has changed a lot over the past fifty years, and so has its main character. Back when the sci-fi institution began in 1963, the Doctor was an elderly, irascible fella. Though intelligent and moralled, he left the heroics to his younger companions. Nowadays, though, the Time Lord is a veritable superhero who saves the world largely single-handedly on a weekly basis and can send alien armies packing with a mention of his name.
This clash of two very different versions of the same character will be at the heart of the upcoming Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon a Time.” In his final adventure, Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor will encounter his first incarnation (played by Harry Potter‘s David Bradley).

Our first look at Jodie Whittaker’s costume as the Thirteenth Doctor has now been revealed. Each version of the Time Lord’s eccentric fashion sense is a great way to differentiate the regenerations from one another, so this moment is always a big one for Doctor Who fans.
As you can see in the gallery below (which also includes some awesome fan art), the Thirteenth Doctor will wear a colourful, slightly more feminine twist on the dress sense of the previous male incarnations. The Doctor has always loved a long coat and Whittaker sports a cream-coloured number with what looks to be a hood. Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor would also be pleased with No. 13’s boots and braces combo.
The colorful top, meanwhile, is an interesting choice, vaguely harking back to the garish multi-coloured coat of the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker being one of Whittaker’s most outspoken...

Steven Moffat chats to us about Doctor Who, the changing face of television, and the internet culture around it...
Ahead of the release of Doctor Who series 10 on DVD and Blu-ray – it lands on Monday, and is available digitally now – outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat did a select few interviews to chat about the show. And he saved one for us.
It was refreshing that, having got lost myself on the way to the interview venue in the depths of London, Moffat himself managed to as well. Apologetic for arriving ten minutes late for our chat, he insisted on adding those minutes to the end of our time, and that’s not something that happens very often with interviews.
With that in mind, we settled down for a long chat about the show, the environment it exists in, and series 10 itself…

Two things can make or break a mini-series. Having a great concept, to draw the reader in, and both knowing when to end the story and making the conclusion good enough to justify the time and money the reader has invested. Not rocket science, but true enough. For me, The Lost Dimension hasn’t ticked the first box, being a tad too rambling, with a poorly established threat. It has relied too heavily on the novelty of multiple Doctors, and as much as I still enjoy that it is becoming a little too familiar now to carry a weak storyline. Coming into this book though, I was optimistic this final issue could save at least some of this story. Cavan Scott and George Mann are fine writers after all.

The wait until Christmas is always a tough one for Doctor Who fans, as the yuletide season routinely brings a new adventure for the Time Lord. This year’s special is set to be extra exciting, though, as it features not only a team-up between the First and Twelfth Doctors, the return of Pearl Mackie’s Bill and a guest spot from Mark Gatiss, but also the final bow of Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and the debut of Jodie Whittaker as No. 13.

I’ve always had a great appreciation and fondness for horror anthologies, and I devoured horror comics as a kid; whether it was House of Mystery or Creepy magazine, they never failed to fire my imagination in short, sharp bursts. When the Romero/King collaboration Creepshow (1982) came out, my dream of seeing these kinds of stories translated to film was nothing but revelatory. I soon discovered it was not the first of its ilk, and began a journey through dusty video store shelves looking for its long-lost relatives. One of my first (and favorite) finds was Vault of Horror (1973), a five-fingered punch to my nascent, pubescent, omnibus-loving heart.
Released by Cinerama Releasing stateside in March and produced by Amicus (the fine folks behind its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt), Vault of Horror (aka The Vault of Horror, for the easily confused, I guess) was not as well received by critics as Tales,...

Societal attitudes have developed in massive ways since 50 years ago, which can make viewing entertainment from that period a little jarring to modern audiences. Take Doctor Who from the 1960s, for example. Thankfully, it mostly survives unscathed, but there are definitely moments that some might consider to be bordering on sexism or racism nowadays, even if they were just products of the time back then.
This Christmas, Doctor Who will be taking a trip back to the 1960s as the Twelfth Doctor encounters his original incarnation. As the show’s present collides with its past, the special – titled “Twice Upon A Time” – will take the opportunity to play with changing attitudes, with the First Doctor being particularly guilty of some “gentle chauvinism.”
David Bradley, who’s portraying the role originally played by William Hartnell in the 1960s, told journalists the following at this weekend’s McM Comic-Con:

Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor will encounter the First Doctor – the original, you might say – in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special “Twice Upon A Time.” It’s sure to be a dramatic meeting of the Time Lords (well, two versions of one Time Lord), as both incarnations will be on the cusp of regenerating into a new body in the episode.
According to David Bradley – who’s taking on the role of the First Doctor from William Hartnell – the Doctors will find each other when they’re suffering from “a personal crisis,” with both struggling to come to terms with their impending “deaths.”
“It brings together these two Doctors, who are both going through a personal crisis about [whether they should be] regenerating, or just ending it all there. And they’re both on this parallel journey of doubt and fear and everything.”

“It brings together these two Doctors, who are both going through a personal crisis about [whether they should be] regenerating, or just ending it all there. And they’re both on this parallel journey of doubt and fear and everything.”

With a new TV show on the horizon, why Lord Of The Rings remains so special to Andrew, and how his perspective has changed...
This article contains spoilers for Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion.
First, some context.
I’d been introduced to Tolkien through The Hobbit, my Grandad’s hardback edition with the lovely blue, black and green illustrations on the cover, followed by the infamously long (physically as well as temporally) BBC radio adaptations of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, which were brought on long car journeys to take the edge off the M6. When I was six my parents recorded the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated version of Lord Of The Rings off the telly, and due to the volume of rewatching I specifically remember the white box with a rainbow coloured motif on the front (I fully expect someone to...

The jaws of Doctor Who fans worldwide hit the floor when David Bradley appeared as the First Doctor in the closing moments of the season 10 finale. After giving an uncanny performance as original actor William Hartnell in the 50th anniversary biopic An Adventure in Space and Time, Whovians were delighted that the former Harry Potter star would be pairing up with Peter Capaldi this Christmas.
If Bradley had his way, though, he would have many more appearances as the First Doctor lined up. When asked if he’d like to return to Doctor Who at a panel during this weekend’s McM London Comic-Con, Bradley was more than enthusiastic about the idea.
“If they asked me, yes, I’d bite their hand off. I think it would be fun. So far, I’m very happy to have been involved in both [Doctor Who and An Adventure in Space of Time]. It’s quite something, you never expect in your...

There’ve been a broad range of reactions to the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, the first woman to play the part in Doctor Who‘s half-century on TV. While there are definitely a number of extreme opinions floating around, Steven Moffat has claimed that most fans love the decision. Even if that’s not entirely true, it would seem that many of the stars of the show are on board with having a female Doctor.
After all, ever since the announcement that Whittaker would be portraying the character, a number of people involved with the sci-fi series, both past and present, have congratulated the actress – including Peter Capaldi, Colin Baker, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, among others. Now, you can add one more to the list, as David Bradley has spoken up as well, showering nothing but praise on Whittaker in the process.

Very rare to get more than a one or two-parter in the Who books, so hats off to Nick Abadzis for this fine four-parter. Vortex Butterflies has been a very entertaining arc, with a little bit of everything. Old faces returning, if you are allowed to call Sarah Jane Smith old, companions bickering, safe houses in other times, and a focus on The Doctor’s humanity, or rather his lack of it. That last one took centre stage last issue, when we found out that the Vortex Butterfly was none other than old Doctor Who foe… Ok, not foe. Companion Gabby.
That was a little surprise was it not. Seems that in every possible future timeline The Tenth Doctor abandons Gabby, and future Gabby is forced to try and build a new place to live from scraps of space and time.

Did you remember Patrick Troughton was the priest in 1976’s The Omen? Yes, director Richard Donner cast the second “Doctor Who” from the long-running British sci-fi series to play the crazed priest who met an untimely end. (An end like,… Continue Reading →

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...
What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.
We won't go so far as Doctor Who...

Ever since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor back in July, Doctor Who fans have been dying to find out more about this new incarnation of the show. Now, we finally have all the juicy details thanks to a press release straight from the BBC.
First up, we can tell you who’ll be joining Whittaker in the Tardis. Yes, it turns out that those earlier rumours were right and British comedian Bradley Walsh is stepping on board the time machine as the Doctor’s latest companion. Apparently, he’ll be playing a character named Graham.
The twist is, though, that the Doctor and Graham will have two other friends joining them on their travels. Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill (both previously seen in British soap opera Hollyoaks) are signing up for regular roles on the sci-fi show. Cole will be playing Ryan while Gill will take on the part of Yasmin.

Part one of the final episode for the Web’s finest fan-made series came out this week, and as usual, it does not disappoint. As Star Trek Continues warps to its conclusion, long-time Trek fans are treated to a wonderful trip back to the very beginning of the classic series.
The latest episode of Stc, “To Boldly Go” (a homage to the famous opening narrative to Classic Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation) is a fun trip into the Trek universe that pays homage to “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, the original 1966 pilot episode for Star Trek. (Okay, that was actually the second pilot, the first being “The Cage”, starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, but I digress.) It shows the fidelity and affection that the makers of this show have for the source material; which is why they chose to end their series that way Star Trek began.
