The story follows a man who is granted the ability to see people's inner thoughts and desires, leading him on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

American undercover agent Peter Murphy, on assignment in East Berlin, has his cover blown. While trying to escape the killers, a man who looks identical to Murphy is killed. Murphy is left alone only to be picked up the dead man's driver and taken home to the dead man's wife. There he must decide whether to assume the dead man's identity and take his chances on being discovered.

At a mountains resort Peter Murphy and Eva Wainwright risk their lives to help a dissident monseigneur elude his country's secret police.
