Although it was released theatrically in Japan and Europe in the 1970s, and had a Japanese home video release on VHS and DVD between 1987 and 2006, the 2015 restoration by Cinelicious Pics is the first time the film has had an official release in the United States.
The film made it's North American television debut on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in the early morning on March 5, 2017. It was rated TV-MA SV.
Third film in Osamu Tezuka and Eiichi Yamamoto's Animerama trilogy, following A Thousand & One Nights (1969) and Cleopatra (1970). It is the only one of the trilogy not to be co-directed by Tezuka, who left Mushi Production shortly after the initial story treatment was written. Tezuka is uncredited on the film.
