During the early '90s, there were few TV actresses hotter in Hollywood than Lara Flynn Boyle. After a handful of supporting credits in the late '80s in movies like "Poltergeist III" and shows like "Amerika," Boyle landed a main cast role as Donna Hayward on David Lynch and Mark Frost's genre-bending supernatural mystery series "Twin Peaks." When the show quickly became a pop culture sensation, Boyle was launched to stardom, and she got plenty of opportunities to show off her talents in the show's first season, where Donna is particularly central to the plot.
In the wake of her "Twin Peaks" fame, Boyle appeared in a number of prominent movies through the early '90s, playing Stacy in "Wayne's World" and co-starring in the 1992 Matthew Modine film "Equinox," among others. She was also a prominent face in celebrity news through the decade, dating other stars like "Twin Peaks" castmate Kyle MacLachlan,...

"They're here" is such a simple quote, yet it's one that terrified a generation, inviting audiences into a world they had never seen before. "Poltergeist," the supernatural horror movie that is deeply rooted in the modern world, is set in a suburban house, with ghosts possessing our everyday appliances and comforts, like the TV. John Carpenter's "Halloween" brought the horror home with a serial killer that attacked not in remote houses, but in the middle of the suburbs. The "Poltergeist" franchise took things a step further by showing that ghosts could plague not just suburban neighborhoods, but even high-rise apartment buildings in the big city — somehow, an idea that isn't as commonplace as it should be.
The franchise revolves around members of the Freeling family, who become targeted by group of ghosts that terrorize and stalk them — led by a demonic entity known as the Beast. The ghosts are...

The previously announced Poltergeist television series is reportedly still in development, according to Variety. On August 19, the outlet exclusively revealed that the upcoming television show being produced by Amazon MGM Studios had found its showrunners in Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. In addition to showrunning, the duo will write and executive produce the series, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.
No plot details have been shared just yet about the show, but we know it's inspired by the original Tobe Hooper-directed film from 1982. Poltergeist is considered a horror classic and went on to spawn two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, and a 2015 remake.
Vazquez has written on many popular shows, including The CW spy thriller Nikita and Fox's Prison Break, while Thompson is an accomplished comic book writer and has written for characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. He also worked...

It was announced last Halloween that Amazon MGM Studios was developing a television series based on the Poltergeist franchise, and that project is now coming closer to reality.
Variety reports this afternoon that Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) and Robbie Thompson (“Supernatural”) have come on board the upcoming Poltergeist television series as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.
Variety notes in today’s fresh report, “Exact plot details are under wraps, aside from the fact that the show is inspired by the iconic 1982 horror film.”
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

To the uninitiated, the "Halloween" franchise is just a slasher series. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. A masked maniac with a big knife wandering around different settings, cutting down anyone unfortunate enough to get in their way. Sure, while that might be true for John Carpenter's classic original, the series would grow increasingly odd and incredulous as the years went on.
As of this writing, there are four different "Halloween" timelines featuring Michael Myers. It starts with the original timeline, including the orignal "Halloween" from 1978, its sequel "Halloween II," the legacy sequel "Halloween H20," and "Halloween: Resurrection." Then, of course, is the colloquial Cult of Thorn timeline, which also includes those first two movies, followed by then "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers," "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers," and "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

Not all horror villains are successful murderers; some like Ghostface from Scream and Annabelle relied on others for their kills. Mister Babadook and Lubdan the Leprechaun were terrifying but ultimately terrible at actually killing their intended victims. The Beast from Poltergeist failed to capitalize on opportunities to kill, making them more of a menacing presence than an effective killer.
Horror villains have kept audiences on the edge of their seats and fearing for their lives, but some were simply terrible at actually killing their victims. The best horror movies have introduced all kinds of villains to audiences, from the intelligent and sneaky to the brutally violent. These titles became known as the slasher film subgenre, focused explicitly on gruesome deaths, and became a hugely popular subgenre. We are nearly ten years removed from the most recent installment in the Poltergeist franchise, with the Gil Kenan-directed remake released back in 2015. That film failed to make a splash of any kind, coming along in the wake of two sequels and a TV series.
So what’s going on with the Poltergeist franchise? Amazon, you may recall, recently acquired MGM, and it looks like Amazon is soon bringing the classic horror franchise back to life.
Variety reports this afternoon that a Poltergeist television series is in early development at Amazon MGM Studios. There is no further information on their plans at this time, however.
Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce on behalf of Amblin Television.

Earlier this week, we were devastated to hear that Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, had passed away at the age of 70, following a six year private battle with cancer. Among the many people who took to social media to mourn the loss of Reubens was special makeup effects artist Mark Shostrom, whose long list of credits includes The Slumber Party Massacre, The Beastmaster, The Mutilator, From Beyond, Witchboard, Prince of Darkness, Poltergeist III, Phantasm II and III, the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Evil Dead II. And while paying tribute to Reubens, Shostrom revealed that an iconic effect from Evil Dead II drew inspiration from an iconic effect in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure!
Shostrom said, “Paul Reubens provided huge inspiration for my work on Evil Dead II. I had been watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS on repeat while sculpting.

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Nest was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
While the early to mid-part of the ’80s was the time of the slasher, the later part of the decade decided to try a lot of new things. A while back, the CBS All Access streaming service was rebooted and rebranded as Paramount Plus. Gothic castles and faraway cabins are classic genre fare, but there’s something to be said for scary movies that tell stories about claustrophobic urban environments and the horrors of being isolated despite being surrounded by densely packed neighbors. Not only are these stories more relatable for big-city folks like myself, but they’re also uniquely positioned to deliver down-to-earth scares with a social twist.
And in honor of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly relocating the action to an LA apartment building, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Apartment Horror movies. After all, there’s nothing scarier than finding yourself trapped in a high rise with nowhere to go but down!
In the interest of keeping the list varied, we’ll be leaving out a few obvious entries like Candyman and Rosemary’s Baby, as I think we can assume that most of our readers have already seen these.

The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.

From "Halloween" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street," there's no shortage of iconic horror movies from the '70s and '80s that launched long-running franchises. Still, "Poltergeist" stands out among the rest because of its cult following - and many of those fans believe the Poltergeist franchise is actually cursed.
A reboot of the classic 1982 horror film "Poltergeist" came out in 2015, but let's be honest: nothing could compare to the original. While no horrific accidents occurred on the set of the most recent movie, there are plenty of rumors of a curse on the original film trilogy's cast.
The movie revolves around a suburban family who moves into a new home and begins to notice strange things involving their 5-year-old daughter, Carol Ann. Turns out, menacing spirits are haunting the house, and while their interactions seem harmless at first, their true evil nature is soon revealed when Carol Ann goes missing,...

Even though he has had countless onscreen roles including "Top Gun," "SpaceCamp," "Poltergeist III," "Steel Magnolias," and even a quick cameo in "Singles" as the mayor of Seattle, legacy actor Tom Skeritt is probably most remembered for appearing as Dallas in Ridley Scott's "Alien." In a fascinating, tell-all 2019 interview with Av Club, Skeritt recognized just how special his time as the Captain of the Nostromo really was. "As it happens, one of the most memorable things in my career was making 'Alien.' I recognized we were making something extraordinary."
Ridley Scott's vision for "Alien" and Dan O'Bannon's screenplay brought a level of astonishing scope mixed with a blue collar realism that completely re-invented what science fiction could be. Living in close proximity to other people yet not knowing what’s going on behind their doors offers limitless potential for thrills and chills, which is best exemplified by outings like Roman Polanski’s so-called ‘Apartment’ trilogy including “Repulsion”, “Rosemary’s Baby”, and “The Tenant” but also spreading outward to titles including “The Sentinel”, “Poltergeist 3”, “Dark Waters” and “Rec”, to name just a few. Now, filmmaker Vikram K. Kumar attempts to provide his own take on the setting with this Tamil-lensed chiller that has quite a lot to like about it.

As a child of the ‘80s, the so-called Poltergeist curse looms largest in my memory amongst films supposedly plagued by supernaturally bad luck. And as a paranormal pop culture researcher, the fact real skeletons were used in the finale’s swimming pool scene makes the notion of a curse all the more compelling. As purely a storytelling device, a curse would make sense; it tracks. Of course there is most likely no truth to it either.
To be sure, there is indeed tragedy connected to the film. Most notable is the murder of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne in November 1982–five months following the film’s June release–and the death of 12-year-old Heather O’Rourke during the filming of Poltergeist III due to complications from an undetected bowel obstruction.
The premature deaths of the two were enough to create the notion of a cursed franchise, which was only exacerbated by the revelation of the skeletons…...

Some movies are born bad. Poltergeist, The Omen, The Exorcist; these are iconic horror films with reputations of misfortune and mishap. Either due to a series of grim coincidences that form a pattern or one or two notable tragedies, a handful of films are said to have near-evil legacies. Maybe it really is as Shirley Jackson mused in The Haunting of Hill House? If some spots attach to themselves an atmosphere of goodness, “It might not then be too fanciful to say some houses are born bad.” So why not movies too?
Within horror films, curses are caused by the bite of a werewolf or a boy who willfully passes along a demonic Std, or a shamed elderly woman who utters an incantation over the button she’s torn from someone. Perhaps it is not a leap then that the production behind a movie about Satan’s offspring would likewise...

Last year, AMC’s horror-centric streaming service Shudder unveiled the compelling documentary “Horror Noire,” examining the role African-Americans played throughout film history. That feature’s success sparked a desire for the service to cater to more niche facets of film history, and their next foray into that arena is “Cursed Films,” which looks to examine films that have long histories of being cursed. The material is interesting, especially in conjunction with the features the five-part documentary series covers, but director Jay Cheel takes too many tangential digressions to keep things from feeling tiring.
When the 1982 feature “Poltergeist” debuted it was quickly tempered by the murder of actress Dominique Dunne. Actors Will Sampson and Julian Beck would pass after the film’s sequel came out, while leading child star Heather O’Rourke passed at just 11-years-old while working on “Poltergeist III.” It’s easy to see where audiences would start to wonder...

While most of the big horror franchises of the decade were getting the sequel treatment in 1988—a year that saw the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, Phantasm II, Poltergeist III, The Howling IV and even Critters 2: The Main Course—one of the biggest and most lasting franchises of the next three decades was just getting its start. Yes, the 1988 release of Tom Holland’s Child’s Play kicked off 30 years of murderous antics from Charles Lee Ray, the serial killer who had his soul transferred into a Good Guys doll named Chucky. Seven movies, one recently announced remake, and another recently announced TV series later, the Child’s Play series is as strong as ever, even outlasting many of its ’80s franchise contemporaries.

There was never really a need to sequelize 1982’s Poltergeist. It told a complete story. It vanquished the evil spirit haunting the house by film’s end. Heck, it even vanquished the house itself. But because the original movie was a hit and it was the ’80s, the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg collaboration got not just one sequel but two, despite the fact that it does not lend itself to being a franchise. New villains and new mythology—and eventually even new family members—were introduced to keep the story going, albeit with mixed results. And while the sequels have their fans, they’re hardly among the most beloved horror films of the decade. Thanks to Scream Factory’s new Collector's Editions of both, horror fans now have the chance to reevaluate them in the best possible format.
