In the early 2000s, Ben Stiller made a number of movies in which he played an awkward leading man who may or may not have to meet somebody’s parents. But he was just as good, if not better, at playing over-the-top comedic villains, as evidenced by his work as White Goodman in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
Disney fans quickly noticed that Goodman, the head of Globo Gym, was distinctly similar to another fitness-obsessed antagonist that Stiller once played: Tony Perkis Jr. from the 1995 Judd Apatow-scripted family comedy Heavyweights.
You can tell it was made in 1995, because it’s about a grown man literally torturing children to get them to lose weight.
As we’ve mentioned before, this observation has even inspired some fans to theorize that the two characters are one and the same, which would mean that Dodgeball takes place after Perkis has relocated, changed his...

A sleeper science fiction comedy hit since its debut in 2021, "Resident Alien" has steadily been entertaining audiences with its extraterrestrial hijinks. The show adapts the comic book of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, starring Alan Tudyk as an alien hiding in the small town of Patience, Colorado. Posing as the town's doctor Harry Vanderspeigle, the alien initially intends to wipe out humanity as part of his otherworldly directive, but then he learns to appreciate it. This change of heart is informed by the friends that Harry makes in town, with "Resident Alien" boasting a strong ensemble of actors joining Tudyk.
A lot of the charm in "Resident Alien" comes from its principal cast, along with the solid writing by series creator Chris Sheridan. As the series progresses, much of these characters' backstories are gradually revealed, giving heart to the wacky sci-fi antics Harry unleashes on the town.

Ben Stiller's new Christmas movie has become a streaming success despite its 37% Rotten Tomatoes score. Since the 1990s, Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence in film and television, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. He later made appearances on shows like Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Extras, the last of which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.
After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film acting and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, such as There’s Something About Mary, Zoolander, Along Came Polly, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. However, since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. Now, Stiller stars in two of 2024's most offbeat Christmas comedies, Nutcrackers and Dear Santa.

We recently learned that Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill will play the lead in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Voltron movie, and the project has now added three new cast members.
THR reports that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora and John Kim are set to join the production is undisclosed roles.
Newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously appeared in Badults and served as Tom Holland’s understudy in Romeo & Juliet on the West End this spring, is also on board.
We don't have details on any of the characters, but scooper Mttsh reported that Brown was in talks to play the villain last week. There's a decent chance the others will play four of the five Voltron pilots.
Plot details are also under wraps, but Thurber did share the following with fans during VoltCon in Indianapolis last month.

When it comes to acting in a major motion picture, one of the most important qualities actors can have is excellent chemistry with their co-stars. Even some of the greatest performers ever can struggle on camera when they fail to achieve a good rhythm with the other members of the cast, which has led to some infamous co-star feuds. When the actors mesh together perfectly, however, it can be pure magic to watch them perform. These connections don't always appear out of the blue, though.
Sometimes, great chemistry on-screen is the product of great chemistry off-screen. Over the years, many famous co-star movie couples who married each other have actually appeared together in films. In fact, when their on-screen dynamic is particularly entertaining to viewers, some couples even go on to star in multiple projects together. After all, there is no better way to showcase chemistry on-screen than by finding...

Amazon MGM Studios may have found its next hit franchise with its upcoming live-action Voltron film, which could become the streamer's robot franchise to equal Transformers. After Voltron spent years in development hell, fans of the legendary animated mecha series will finally get to see the members of Voltron protect the galaxy with their robot lions in a whole new way.
Voltron already has well-established talent supporting it, as Henry Cavill recently joined the cast fresh off of leaving Netflix's The Witcher. Amazon's Voltron has also found a director in Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously directed hits like We're The Millers, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Netflix's Red Notice. For Voltron, Amazon has the benefit of the source material's cosmic depth, distinctive human characters, and exciting story to make a blockbuster epic even beyond Transformers.

Henry Cavill, who played Superman in The Dceu, aka the "SnyderVerse," is set to take to the skies again... in a giant Robot Lion.
THR reports that the Man of Steel and The Witcher star has signed on to play a lead role in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Voltron movie.
Cavill joins previously-cast newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously appeared in Badults and served as Tom Holland’s understudy in Romeo & Juliet on the West End this spring. No details on either of their characters have been disclosed, but we assume they will play two of the five Voltron pilots.
The project is being helmed by Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber, and is based on the Japanese sci-fi show Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger Xv. World Events would later edit and dub the series as a syndicated show, naming it Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which ran in the mid '80s.

Vince Vaughn has always been widely praised for his iconic comedic performances, but one of his more nuanced dramatic turns in True Detective season 2 remains criminally underrated. Since he broke out in the 90s, Vaughn has been primarily known for his comedic roles in movies like Anchorman, Wedding Crashers, and Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Along with frequent co-stars Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell, Vaughn became renowned as a member of the Frat Pack, a group of actors who dominated the comedy genre with movies like Old School and Zoolander throughout the 2000s.
But Vaughn has always mixed more complex dramatic roles into his filmography alongside those iconic comedic performances. He played Norman Bates in the 1998 remake of Psycho, the hard-edged Sergeant Howell in the World War II epic Hacksaw Ridge, and vengeful prisoner Bradley Thomas in the brutal action thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99. Rawson Marshall Thurber's "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" lived up to its title when it hit theaters on June 18, 2004. It had been a fairly meh summer up to this point. "Shrek 2" was a smash, and the Alfonso Cuaron-directed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" was the first truly good and aesthetically distinctive film in that series, but most of the heavy hitters were, at best, interesting misfires. When word got out from critics that Steven Spielberg would be adding to the disappointment parade with "The Terminal," it looked like a full-on bummer summer was in the offing.
No one was expecting much from a comedy built around a popular playground pastime, but "Dodgeball" was an uproarious slapdash lark that opened to an unexpected $30 million at the domestic box office. Comedy films often rely on chaotic humor to entertain viewers, with high energy, absurd characters, and shocking physical comedy. Films like Anchorman, Airplane!, and Dodgeball deliver constant laughter with unforgettable performances from comedy legends like Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. With hilarious dialogue, ridiculous scenarios, and unforgettable moments, these comedy films are a perfect choice for a night of uncontrollable laughter with friends or a solo movie viewing.
There are tons of great comedy films, but some contain a chaotic energy that makes them wildly entertaining from beginning to end. While some comedies center more on romance or action, others are made purely for constant laughter, with high energy, absurd characters and ideas, and shocking physical comedy. Humor is subjective, and comedy films will always be hit-or-miss depending on the viewer, but chaotic humor is almost always a hit in the right setting.

One of the biggest box office surprises in 2013 was the comedy film "We're the Millers," which featured Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter as a ragtag group of amateur drug smugglers posing as a family in the hopes of bringing home a massive payday. The road trip comedy was a huge financial success and is considered by many to be one of the very best films of Sudeikis' career. Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber ("Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story"), the film also features a knock-out supporting cast including Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, Ed Helms, Molly Quinn, Luis Guzman, Thomas Lennon, Ken Marino, Tomer Sisley, Matthew Willig, and the feature film debut of Sam Richardson.

Some sports movies would have been more compelling if the good guys had lost, as predictable endings can become stale. Movies like Dodgeball and The Karate Kid are examples where the protagonists' victories feel undeserved and do not align with the overall message of the film. By exploring alternative endings and allowing the villains to win, these sports movies could have delved into more nuanced storytelling and provided a fresher take on the genre.
It may be a divisive statement, but there are just some sports movies where the good guys should have lost. While the heroes securing the victory in the finale is almost always a heartwarming and inspiring moment, it's also become extremely predictable after decades of sports dramas resulting in the same pleasing outcome. Moreover, giving the protagonists a final winning moment is far from being the only way to craft endings that stick with audiences throughout the years.

Some of the biggest A-List actors in Hollywood are surprisingly better directors. Many of today's prominent directors started their careers through acting but rose into esteemed ranks of writing and directing that make them much better known as directors than actors. Some examples include Greta Gerwig, who has appeared in Frances Ha, Jackie, and 20th Century Women, and Jordan Peele, who was part of the comedic duo Key & Peele before skyrocketing to directorial success with 2017's Get Out.
Peele and Gerwig are not necessarily A-List actors nor are their directorial talents much of a secret since both were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director in 2018. Several other big-name stars who are certainly considered A-listers in acting and have lesser-known aptitudes in directing can even be argued as better directors than they are actors. Here are ten examples of A-list celebrities that are secretly much better at directing despite their fame as actors.

Justin Long’s rise reached its peak in the late 2000s following his starring role in Accepted, but his career has since undergone an interesting transformation. With over 100 credits, Long has been working steadily for 20 years. His career began strong, with a small role in the 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. Long played his first starring role as Darry in the slasher classic Jeepers Creepers in 2001 and appeared in a significant role as Justin in 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
Justin Long’s first leading role in a major Hollywood film came in 2006 when he starred in the slacker comedy Accepted. Accepted follows a young underachiever who chooses to create his own university after being rejected by numerous colleges, only to find himself in over his head when other college rejects begin applying. The film, which relied heavily on improvisation, owes much of its lasting appeal to a talented central cast of rising stars.

Action movie star Chuck Norris addresses whether he'll once more join the American Dodgeball Association of America in a cameo for the upcoming Dodgeball 2. The in-development sequel is a continuation of the 2004 sports comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, which saw Vince Vaughn's humble small-time gym owner bring together a group of misfits to face Ben Stiller's egotistical gym mogul in a high-stakes dodgeball tournament to save his beloved business. Dodgeball featured a number of recognizable cameos alongside Norris, with surprising actors playing themselves and characters within the film.

"Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" was a major commercial success when it first premiered in June 2004. At the time, the film grossed over $168 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. Its raunchy comedy, feel-good story, and hilarious cast helped make the movie a classic 2000s hit. Now, 19 years later, Deadline reports the film is officially getting a sequel, and yes, it'll star Vince Vaughn.
As you may remember, the original film starred Vaughn as Peter Lafleur, the owner of a small, local gym called Average Joe's Gym that's in danger of being taken over by his business rival White Goodman (Ben Stiller), who's the owner of the bigger Globo Gym across the street. When Peter hears about a dodgeball tournament that's giving away a $50,000 prize, he enters the competition with a group of misfits in hopes of using the prize money to save his business.

We’re not sure who asked for it, but Vince Vaughn is returning to star in a sequel to his 2004 comedy Dodgeball, reports Deadline.

When actors work so closely together, it’s not surprising when sparks fly, and an on-set romance begins. That’s how the love story between Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor began back in 1999. The couple met during filming on the unaired television pilot, Heat Vision and Jack. The following year, they got married. And though time has taken the couple down a complicated road, Stiller and Taylor reunited in large due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Paramount+ will roll the 20-sided dice on a Dungeons & Dragons TV series.
The streamer has landed an eight-episode series based on the ever-popular role playing game. The show comes from Entertainment One and Paramount Pictures; Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot script and is set to direct the first episode.

The streamer has landed an eight-episode series based on the ever-popular role playing game. The show comes from Entertainment One and Paramount Pictures; Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote the pilot script and is set to direct the first episode.
Toymaker Hasbro owns D&d and eOne (though it’s looking to sell the film and TV business). eOne is the lead studio on the series and also collaborated with Paramount Pictures on the feature film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is due for a March 31 release. The series will be separate from the film, sources tell THR.

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball–but that doesn’t mean you can dodge a sequel. Vince Vaughn, who played Average Joe’s captain Peter in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, discussed the odds of there being a sequel to the 2004 comedy.
Thankfully for fans, Vince Vaughn is game for a sequel, although the story would have to be a priority. “They’ve always talked about these things forever and I had an idea that was fun and the studio likes it, so we’ll see where it goes…I think Ben [Stiller] is open to doing it, I think he’s in the same boat as me actually which is if it’s a really fun and great idea then that’s fun, but if it’s just something to go do it again then why?”
Vince Vaughn elaborated, saying, “You would just want to...

"Resident Alien" star Alan Tudyk has had a number of memorable roles throughout his career. In terms of movies, long-time fans look back fondly on the parts he played in "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," "A Knight's Tale," and "Tucker & Dale vs Evil." He even had that memorable guest spot on an episode of "Frasier" as the new owner of Kacl that Dr. Crane takes under his wing. Although, his most beloved role to date is probably still the fun-loving pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and its feature film sequel "Serenity."
However, to many members of his modern fanbase, Tudyk is likely more known for his voiceover work. He can be heard in "Ice Age," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold," "Young Justice," "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," and HBO's "Harley Quinn," among many other projects across film, TV, video games, and more. In the world of fiction, every character serves a purpose. For some unlucky characters, their only purpose in the narrative is to die.
These characters are sometimes known as "Redshirts," a term coined by "Star Trek" fans used to refer to the unfortunate ensigns who'd be sent along on a mission with the main cast members, their inevitable death just a plot device to raise the stakes of the episode. Death is a commonly used trope in film and television because it's a common experience in real life. A character's death can serve many purposes, whether it be illustrating the danger and severity of a situation or forcing another character to undergo change and growth. It works as a narrative tool, and so writers use it often.
It makes sense, then, that in Hollywood, you start to see some actors pushed into the Redshirt role more often than others. Actors...
