- TriviaAccording to an interview on Newtype Magazine, creator Shuichi Oshida came up with Panda-Z in 1999 when his former job acquired a Macintosh and he learned Adobe Illustrator on it. Shortly after quitting that job and going freelance, Oshida was told by a former co-worker that MegaHouse Corporation was looking for character designers. Eventually, MegaHouse saw Oshida's Panda-Z art, and with Mazinger Z creator Go Nagai's full blessing, created a brand-new merchandising lineup for the character.

Panda-Z is not my normal style of show to watch but something about it caught my eye. I've only seen the first 5 episodes so far (each 5 minutes long, including opening and closing credits), but I'm hooked already. Normally I'm into action anime shows like InuYasha or Bleach but no one can resist the cuteness of Pan Taron and his giant robot Panda-Z as they battle the evil Skull Panda and his Warunimal forces. The show is like the old silent movies, where you watch the movie only sound effects and music and any dialog is displayed in the flash card style between scenes. So there's no issue of dubbed vs. subbed here, you either read it in Japanese or read it in English. ;) A few sites I've looked at have given this show an age rating around the 13 year old mark. After watching the first 5 episodes I saw nothing that seemed worthy of anything more than PG IMHO. Maybe there is something in future episodes that warrant this rating, I don't know. DVD's run about about $13 per volume and Volume 1 is also available packaged with a Panda-Z toy for around $20 I think. Anyways, I think this show is definitely worth checking out and maybe even worth buying on DVD.
